TOUROCOM NY Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sunny! Good luck! Just be yourself, maintain good eye contact, and try to answer every questions. Some questions may seem difficult to answer (and they dont neccesarily have to be the ethical type) but what they are looking for is that you are able to form an opinion and provide reasoning about various issues. Be prepared to answer questions about your personal statement and details in your primary/secondary. If you have done research be prepared to discuss it in depth and know your field well. They will not ask you super tough questions, but if for example you have worked with a certain animal model while doing research make sure you understand it and are able to explain it. During my interview I spent a whole 10 minutes talking about my research project and the animal model I was using (mind you I am a graduate student).

Some questions I was asked:
tell us about yourself
why DO
did you shadow a DO
what did you learn from your volunteer experience
tell us about your research
tell us about your publication
tell us about your animal model

I think I know what you mean. Just has one building.

I did give a tour today to half of the interviewees, and one of them did mention that he was asked about the downregulation of NMDA receptors. Ouch.

For those who are apprehensive about upcoming interviews, I can assure you that most of the interviews here are NOT like that. I actually found it slightly humorous that it was the chair of the OMM department who asked the interviewee the above question. As others have said, questions like these are just posed to ruffle your feathers and see how you respond to being put on the spot/high pressure. Better to say "I don't know" than to fumble around for something you may end up regretting. I know the interview day is stressful enough as it is, but being prepped for these curveballs will make it a little easier on you.

So yes, there is a mix of stressful interviews and laid-back interviews- it's all luck of the draw, but be prepared for anything and everything. Be confident, be honest, and be enthusiastic, and you'll be fine. Remember, they've made it clear that they want you, and that interview is your one opportunity to sell yourself to them.

Good luck to all future interviewees, see you soon...

rofl, that person was me. omg, worst. question. ever.

just have a question for those who got accepted:

the email you guys received doesn't have your name on it right? it's just titled " Dear student", correct?

and anyone from last week's interviews received the snail mail yet?

Thank you~

Nope, no snail mail yet 🙁
Getting kind of worried because you'd figure it wouldn't take this long to mail a letter from Harlem to the LES, right? :/

I am in California. I got an acceptance email already but I want to receive the snail mail to make sure. I understand how you feel 🙁

haha I didn't even get an e-mail yet so I don't know what's happening to me until the snail mail comes. here's to hoping for tomorrow!

Good luck to everyone who interviewed 12/7. Just FYI for people who have yet to interview, of our group of 18ish, the interview feedback ranged from extremely pleasant and conversational, to very intimidating and non-responsive. It all depended on who interviewed you.

Also, I'm going off the top of my head on this but I believe Mr. Perez said roughly 180 have been interviewed, and ~80 have been sent acceptance letters so far. Remember that this is for a class for ~135 (?) and includes last year's masters students, deferred acceptances, etc. Jan 5th is the deposit deadline so W/L'ers should see some movement after that.

And yes, the dean of pre-clinical said that the bio score is all that matters for him, not sure if that translates into admissions dept though. As for the verbal...let's just say he doesn't think very highly of it. Seemed like a pretty cool guy.

anyone make a fb group for the class of 2016?

There will be an official class FB made for you by either one of the current students, or by the DOA soon. It'll be a great resource. Just be patient!

I am wondering the same thing...I got that email (just "dear student," no name on it anywhere) on Monday and thought for sure I would have received the letter in mail by now. I live on Long Island and if they got mailed out friday, I would think I'd have it. Not sure what the deal is.

Ya, I am getting very paranoid. please let me know when you get a letter. Thanks

I finally figured out who you are, dbizzy. lol How did the interview go? How did you like Touro overall compared to KCUMB?

An applicant in New Jersey received the snail mail confirmation yesterday.
If you are in California, I wouldn't be surprised for the letter to take ~ 1 full week though.

Hey there bud, I hope your night out in Kansas City was fun. TouroCOM was a completely different experience than KCUMB in almost every aspect. I'll PM you with my thoughts...don't want to get too honest out here in public.

I'm curious myself at the comparison. Maybe could start a KCUMB v TOUROCOM-NY thread? (and I guess leave out stuff you really don't feel comfortable putting online?)

Well I've been to both and don't mind posting my thoughts as I am attending another school all together.
KCUMB had a systems based curriculum--taught in blocks. The faculty/staff seemed to enjoy the family feel of the school and it almost seemed as if the school was some sort of gated community. Most students in years 1 and 2 seemed to live across the street and they recommended crossing the street in groups or with security. The school and apartment building had heavy security. Personally, I did not feel unsafe--the area just seemed run down. I'm not 100% but I think the school required you to do community service. Almost had an undergrad feel to the school.

For me, I liked the atmosphere at Touro. Faculty seemed to listen to students needs and were making appropriate changes. I also, liked the idea of living in NYC.

It's interesting to see that many applicants are in the same boat. I'm also debating between KCUMB vs. Touro right now, and I would love to hear some more opinion from different people. For me, I'm leaning towards Touro but this also involves personal reasons. I have my family/friends in NY/NJ area, and I can also commute to Touro (thus sparing the housing cost). Another plus would be schooling in NYC (resembles Seoul, Korea where I lived for 17 years). I've had some people that left me with a very vague compliment of how KCUMB has a superb curriculum that outweighs my convenience for attending Touro, but those people never made the effort to enlighten me further. What are some objective reasons to choose KCUMB over Touro? (better board prep? rotation sites? residency match?) Can ya'll share some thoughts?

I thought Touro had some faculty that wrote books for Kaplan board review?? I just got the sense that Touro treated you more like an adult than KCUMB--most likely get that feeling because it seemed like students were together all of the time (in class, at the apartment/dorm).

I thought both schools were good. You will probably do best where you feel more comfortable.

My impressions from the visits:

The Settings:
The locations are, as expected, entirely different, with Harlem and Kansas City on opposite ends of the spectrum. Midwesterners and small town people will have to adjust to the fast-paced, public-transportation-dependent big city life, which isn't for everybody. I know many people who live for this, and others who abhor having to stand face-to-face in a packed subway everyday.

On the other hand, you're one hop/skip/jump away from the center of the world, whereas in Kansas City, well...you're one car ride to nowhere (compared to NYC). In terms of things to do, downtown KC doesn't hold a candle to Manhattan. If you're not from the midwest and are thinking about KCUMB, make sure that you can absolutely handle living here for at least two years. Things are much slower paced than in the big cities.

Both schools are located near low socioeconomic neighborhoods. KCUMB is directly to the west of some questionable parts of town. One thing that was constantly touted was their security, which will personally escort you back to your apt if you wish, but understand that crime does exist here. TouroCOM is in Harlem, but Harlem really isn't bad as you may think as long you've got at least some street smarts. I feel perfectly safe here, but one of the small-towner interviewees was having a heck of a time trying to convince her parents that her life wouldn't be in danger in Harlem.

Cost of Living:
Huge difference. Most of the KCUMB students live in the complex across the street, where one-bedroom apartments start at $615, utilities included. You get much more options in NY, but also understand that living costs in Manhattan will easily be 2-4 times as much, depending on which area and type of living situation you decide on. One-beds are especially expensive here, and foot per foot, you pay much more for less.

The Campuses:
The campuses are aesthetically quite distinct. Compared to Touro, KCUMB is an impressive school, especially in the newer parts of campus. The auditorium is grand, the library actually resembles a library, many of the classrooms have with multiple flat screens, etc. The campus is spread across a bunch of buildings and you do have to do some outdoor walking to traverse from one side of the campus to the other.

Real estate obviously comes at a premium in NYC, and TouroCOM is located in a multi-level building, with DO students spending most of their lives on one floor, PharmD students on another. Walking down the hallway past the study rooms gave me the feeling an 80's hospital. The study rooms are modest sized and don't have windows (the Pharm ones rooms do), but this isn't a problem if you do most of your studying at home. There is no dress code and the building can be accessed 24 hours a day, which is convenient. One thing that irked me is that students have to pay to use the sim man, though they were supposedly trying to get this changed.

Overall, the differences in school size are somewhat negated when you realize that you will spend most of your 1st and 2nd year lives in only a handful of rooms, regardless of what DO/MD school you choose. KCUMB gives you more of a "university" feel, whereas TouroCOM is more intimate, but also the least impressive campus of all the places I've interviewed at.

The Interview Day:
As for the interview day and tours, I felt that KCUMB definitely put their best foot forward. It was the most professional and well-organized interview I attended. I don't know if the school hand-picked the most well-rounded students and trained them to do everything right, but they were organized, professional, and basically spent their entire day babysitting us. Everything seemed very well-put together, but at the same time, this can also give a sense of artificial-ness. There was very little student interaction, except at lunch, and most of the students seemed neutral if anything.

TouroCOM's interview day was, well, no-frills. You spend most of your morning sitting in a conference room with fellow interviewees, with different deans and coordinators coming in to talk to you one by one. I felt the staff at Touro was more willing to connect on a personal level. After the interviews, a pair of student ambassadors split you into two groups and take you for a quick tour. It was finals week and the school was bustling, so we actually got to see the students in action. Most of them were friendly, said hi, and traded jokes with the ambassador. The overall experience at Touro was much more informal, but also more real.

Student Body:
Very different between the two schools. Although neither school has any significant regional biases, KCUMB's students are mostly from the midwest, where as TouroCOM's students are from all over the damn place. Also, look up the AACOM CIB and check out the demographics of each school. I'm not going to get into race, but understand that there are big differences in that pie-chart as well, if it matters to you.

In the end, the schools are so different that it's all about personal preference. I have a feeling that those of you who interview at both schools will quickly get a feel for which one is for you. Hope that helped.

I agree with this. Didn't feel like an episode of the stepford wives at Touro

I thought Touro had some faculty that wrote books for Kaplan board review??

Our physiology professor, Dr. Conrad Fischer, is the Chairman of Medicine at Kaplan Medical and wrote the books for the Kaplan USMLE review.

Panicking-- my home address is in NYC and I still haven't gotten a letter? 😕

i know. they said it was sent friday so what is the deal. is it being sent by horseback? even then it should have still gotten to me in long island a few days ago

Hey Guys, I'm from Cali and I will be attending Touro NY next fall. Housing is pretty expensive 😱 and I'm looking for a roommate? If anyone is interested, PM me. Thanks!

Hey dbizzy, thank you for sharing your thoughts. 👍 I have to agree with most if not all of what you mentioned about the two schools.

Our physiology professor, Dr. Conrad Fischer, is the Chairman of Medicine at Kaplan Medical and wrote the books for the Kaplan USMLE review.

I believe he has the best selling Step 2 book. He is also the guy in the kaplan step 1 physio videos and Step 2 IM and some other random videos. He also has some good flash cards out for step 1 and 2. For step 2 prep, he is considered an authority.

Some people cant stand him in person, others love him; but his material is good.

Anybody know if I haven't got the secondary by now if it is a rejection? Been complete since November...

Finally got snail mail letter. Postmarked 12/02. Not sure how it took that long

Mail is probably slower probably due to increased volume for the holidays.

the decision in the snail mail is consistent with the decision in the emai right? sorry I am just being paranoid now~~

Yes, it's the same. And I totally get the paranoid feeling. This whole process has driven me batty I swear🙂

My secondary was auto-delivered to my trash folder so make sure to check there too. I almost didn't see mine because of it!

I would call them. Can't hurt

I just called Issa but straight to voicemail. I sent in an e-mail instead. I hope to hear back soon since I'm leaving the country in a few days... for a month.
Let me know if you had better luck calling than I did.

I received my secondary invite about 2 weeks after AACOMAS was verified, but this was way back in August. After they received my secondary though, it was pretty quick: complete e-mail in 4 days and interview invite 2 days after. Not sure how Touro does their secondary invites anymore because I heard they are less selective about them now. I wouldn't assume it's a rejection.Call and check in a week or so. Good luck!

I've been trying to reach either Issa or Joseph Perez for the last week or so and they've all been going straight to voicemail :/

Did you leave a voicemail? I'll let you know if Mr. Sow e-mails me back.

Yep, left one last week and another one today. Hopefully I'm not bugging them too much.

I'll wait for the official 2-week mark before I flip out haha

Is the class full now? I haven't sent in my secondary yet, how full do you think the class is right now?

A few posts back they said 80 acceptances have been given so far for the 135 available positions (less however many graduate students matriculate). It's safe to assume not all 80 will be matriculate, but the class is definitely filling.
