Hi:

I am currently a pgy-1 urology resident in texas, about to start my pgy-2. my steps are 230 (93)/203 (83). During med school, mid of my class with mostly HP's, a few H's, great med school with great reputation, 3 great LORs from urologists, 1 from anesthesia attending. I want to transfer to CA-1/pgy-2 anesthesia residency hoping there would be a slot open next year, what are my chances? and What should I do to know about unfilled slots?

Thanks a lot!

Your chances for a start in the fall of 2007 are great. Fall, '06 is a very late proposition. Your scores are finea and your PGY-1 year should be transferrable. You need to start contacting programs and inquiring about the availability of positions for both this year (unlikely) and next year.

Dude your chances are excellent even in a big city like New York or Boston. I transferred from G. Surgery to CA1 without losing any time. A friend of mine transferred from Urology ( after 2 years) and she is doing well and quite happy. My advise will be to do an elective in anesthesia before making a final decision except if you've already made up your mind. I will tell you one thing is for sure intubating and physio-pharm is far more exciting that placing foleys and driving the resectoscope  Just kidding bro, Good luck.

There probably aren't too many 2006 spots out there, but an outside the match 2007 shouldn't be too hard to get. Send every program you're even remotely interested in a CV and cover letter.

Hi:

Thanks so much for all the encouragements! I wish I discovered this forum earlier! I will start contacting the programs soon. You guys don't think a low step 2--203(83) is going to hurt me? I am kinda worried about that. should I try to do well on step 3? By the way, I did a year of research during med school, but in urology though, no publications in journals though, poster/presentation at international conference. How many schools should I contact?

Thanks a lot!

you may lose a year, but agree that you definitely will be able to transfer into gas in time. urology is harder to get into and generally more academic, and those traits that got you into urology will serve you even better in gas.
do your best on step 3, one lower score is no big deal. sh it happens.

good luck.
