Would a Transitional year in surgery be acceptable for an advanced Radiology or PM&R residency?

I'm wondering if I should apply to TY surgery as a back up in case I'm not able to match in to a TY medicine program.

Thank you

You mean a preliminary year. Transitional year programs are a totally separate thing. Radiology does accept Prelim Surgery PGY1. I'm not sure about PM&R, but I would expect so. The only one that doesn't as far as I've heard is Neurology that requires a Prelim IM year.

Thank you for the reply.

What's a transitional year program?

I was under the impression its the same as pre-lim

TY is similar to prelim medicine but generally with more electives and easier schedule. For that reason it's highly sought after and more competitive than prelim medicine.

Prelim surgery is accepted by both radiology and PM&R, but hardly anyone goes that route because it's arguably the hardest intern year.

You have three big options for your intern year. Prelim medicine, prelim surgery, and transitional year.

A lot of surgery prelims don't even actually interview. While TYs are exclusively filled by people going into advanced specialities and most prelim medicine programs are as well (+neurology), prelim surgery are frequently filled by people who fail to match at categorical surgery. There are always spots for prelim surgery available in the SOAP. Feel free to apply to a few if there are particular ones in locations that are important for you, but it wouldn't be strictly necessary to have that backup option in place.

While radiology programs are mostly advanced, a lot of rehab programs are categorical and don't need a separate intern year.

Thank you everyone for the info, much appreciated.

When applying to Prelim-Surg/Med programs on ERAS, should I indicate my PGY2 interest?
It gives me the option of typing in to a box.

can someone clarify this?

do i apply to prelims + advanced, and categorical programs? If i match into a categorical program then will I be pulled out of the prelim match?

Anyone? I'm applying to PMR but in case I cant get a prelim IM slot I'm applying to prelim-surgery.
What should I indicate as my interest?
