I'm just curious about something, and I figure someone here knows the answer.

What is the difference between a level I Trauma center and a level II trauma center? Is it the facilities, doctors, size? Do all emergency rooms have a designated level can smaller ones be a level III or IV Trauma center).

i think it's the services that are provided.

the truama I centers are ready to perform any kind of surgery necessary to treat a patient.

trauma designations are actually based on a number of factors including on site staffing, facilities requirements, etc. level 1 trauma centers have to have all essential services represented in house 24/7 while levels 2,3, and 4 can have some folks available on call within a certain timeframe. I believe the criteria are based on a designation system set up by the american college of surgeons. level 1 centers often have trauma fellowships but I do not know if this is a requirement. hope that helps-e

the previous few posts (yes i'm going for doctora foxy's post number) list different hospitals across the country with various trauma level designations. they sort of explain the qualifications.

According to the traumacare website (and based on the American College of Physician):

Level I Full range of services including Research and Medical Education

Level II Full range of services

Level III Availability of a General Surgeon, Orthopedic, Neurosurgical and Emergency Services specialists on call 24/7

Level IV Emergency services with a surgeon available (certain states only require a physician to be available)

Level V This is only seen in Washington State Statute and is a non-physician staffed clinic, i.e., Advance Nurse Practitioner Emergency Care facility in an isolated community where no physician is otherwise available.

That being said, I have heard physicians refer to Level I centres as only those that have pediatric surgical/neurosurgical and neonatal services available 24/7.
