Hello,
I am a 4th year HPSP and I thought it might be helpful to briefly summarize my impressions of Travis and Nellis FMRs after. Rotating at both. Before I do I will say that both programs are FABULOUS, and you would walk away with excellent training.
TRAVIS:
-unopposed ( a few specialists in the hospital along with surgeons, but the only medical residents EM and FM).
-inpatient heavy (6 months inpatient each year)
-my impression was that everyone was tired and had stopped work hard, but generally speaking happy. Residents got along well with each other and attending, but a definite separation between the faculty and residents.
-hospital is very large and beautiful
-large emphasis on lectures and didactics
NELLIS:
-unopposed
-around 3-4 months inpatient with a way smaller load for the resident team
-large emphasis on acupuncture, OMT, wilderness medicine
-opportunity to rotate in Yosemite and Alaska in 3rd year
-huge emphasis on proficiency in note writing, excellent outpatient teaching, lots of minor procedure time
-opportunity to be cleared for colonoscopy
-general impression was very laid back, residents were very relaxed and were one big family with the faculty included, conscious effort of promoting resident well being
Summary: Boh awesome, but it depends what you want. If you thrive in a bit more high intensity and would like to be well trained in high acuity Travis is stronger, but Nellis has stronger outpatient training and is less stressful/hours.
If you have any questions please message me.
