I was wondering if any of you here study tropical diseases? And to bank off of this, for first and second year students in Navy HPSP I saw that the summer AD would involve working on research projects with the Navy. Is this correct? And are there chances to select which project you would work on?

Also I would like to ask what trolling is? I see a lot of value in this site; I know I would really feel bad down the road if I had not been exposed to some of these expressed experiences before deciding to sign up.

I don't know if I have been “trolling”, there are things that I would like to know more about before committing.

Thanks

I've done the Military Tropical Medicine course that the Navy offers; you spend a month at USUHS then two weeks in South America on a humanitarian mission. There are plenty of other similar opportunities in the military, from short-term trips like that mentioned above to a career in the field.

A troll is someone who tries to pick a fight on a forum.

By all means get all the information you can about the process of joining the military. It's a commitment with plusses and minuses that you can't easily undo.

Tropical Medicine is NOT available to students. There are a plethora of reasons to include credentials and the limitation of no orders outside the continental US.

That's right, your trop med opportunities as a student will be slim to none. It might be hard as a resident too, as they are the last to get invited to apply to the MTM course, although it does happen.

I know one of the most common ways to get to the MTM course is to go between completing internship and starting your flight surgery class. Gotta love playing with poo!!!

To answer the OP question, your normal time on AD with the military is spent doing clinical rotations and not research. I'm sure you could set something up if you really wanted though.

I went down to Pensacola for 4 weeks this summer and did an opporational elective there. One of the things I did was work in an aerospace medicine research lab. I mostly did library research, busy work, and was able to help with the projects, but I only was in the lab for about two weeks. If I was there longer I would have done more and seen more of the flight medicine part too, but this was mostly because of some administrative problems (long story). Overall it was a neat experience. I also drove to Panama City to check out the dive school, where I found two other HPSP students who were exempt from OIS for being priors. Something to look into if you have time to do something other than school orders for your second year.
