with the mcat fast approaching i find myself in a position where it has for me to fall asleep..all i can think about it mcat 🙁

I only had trouble falling asleep the night before the MCAT. Otherwise, I've been having a heck-load of nightmares since then.

start exercising during the day.

I agree this is the best thing you can do. Tylenol PM makes you feel hung over when you wake up. Drink more water and less caffeinated beverages. Also wake up earlier and study in the morning rather than at night.

Racing mind syndrome. I relax and visibly imagine black nothingness. I once couldn't fall asleep for about 3 hours because whenever I closed my eyes, I'd be watching an intense battle of StarCraft in my head. And this was about 4 years past my last StarCraft game. Oh my God about 400+ Marines died in my dream because I just couldn't disconnect from my imagination into sleep.

Valium, maybe mix and match with vicodin and a few shots of vodka, usually does the trick. I hear good things about Propofol too

I'd advise against going with tylenol pm or anything like that if you can help it. It will certainly help you fall asleep, but back in undergraduate I started using that to get over conversations in the hall outside my dorm. I ended up using it for over a year because it prooved so useful. (It's also true about the "hung over" bit. It's not really like a hang over, but I'd sleep for a long time and be exhausted when I woke up... which led to problem #2. Massive starbucks coffee abuse.)

It was reasonably difficult to get myself to stop using it. The sleeping bits, that is. I'm still drinking my coffee ~.~

It's partly just a self-control thing, of course, but if you can find another way to deal I'd recomend it. The best way to deal is to try and stress over your MCAT a bit less. Especially if you're not taking it immediately. Exercise and such might help you too, as other's have said.

I smoked a large amount of weed prior to taking the MCAT. It really helps you relax and fall asleep. You wake up feeling refreshed and ready for another day. Valium and Vodka does have the alliteration going for it though...

i drank 1-2 beers each night a week before the mcat it helped me fall asleep. I didnt drink anything the night before the mcat except like a beer at dinner because i didnt want to feel drowsy during the test

never...
I sleep too much...lucky me~~😵

Damn, that's the number one thing I'm never going to do. Every time I have smoked pot prior to a big event, I overslept and missed it or was very late. Popping some ephedrine before the test might help, although you'll need to re-dose after a few hours. 👍

Ugh I have sleep problems all the time. I only slept 2 hours before my MCAT (far less than ideal, I know).

Also last week before a morning shift at the hospital, I couldn't sleep at all so ended up working after being up for 20 some odd hours. I kept wishing the patients would stay home, but they didn't 😛 lol

Don't smoke weed and don't drink alot of alcohol before the test. I did not have sleep problems before the MCAT and did quite well. However, before Step One earlier this summer, I began having serious sleep problems about 2 weeks before the test. I attribute it to anxiety. I got about three hours of sleep before I showed up to take Step One. Somehow, I crushed Step One, and was quite suprised that I did extremely well. But, yeah, lay off the weed and alcohol.

Congrats!

OP,

just read the old testament as your lying in bed... They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.

Oh my gosh, I thought my SC and War3 dreams were bad, then I started playing Left 4 Dead and all I see is thousands of zombies being shot and bleeding in my dreams... :scared:

- The OP may not wake up after a night of this. Especially if it is his first time taking Valium.

I'm not to the MCAT point yet, but I suffer from bouts of insomnia. I have a list of things that i try each time, sometimes the milder things work, sometimes they don't. It can take up to 2 weeks to find what will work.

I first try mild "home remedies" such as chamomile tea, dried hops mixed with some other type of tea for flavor, warm milk, etc. It's fairly rare when they work, but they do sometimes. Next I try taking one benadryl, followed after a couple of nights of trying this with 2 benadryl. If THAT doesn't work, my doctor prescribed me some Trazadone. The Trazadone almost always works.

If that STILL doesn't work, after a couple of nights, I'll say screw it and straight shot vodka till I pass out

I meant that 400+ Marines died in my IMAGINATION. This was BEFORE I fell asleep. My dreaming about sheep became dreaming about Zerglings owning Marines.
