Kind of a girly question, but what did people wear for their interviews? I'm trying to decide how formal to go with this... Any suggestions would be helpful!

Based off your preface I'm assuming you're a guy?

Buy a suit and get it tailored. Keep the colors and patterns simple, nothing crazy. A safe and always good looking outfit would be a charcoal suit with a white shirt and navy blue tie.
 
When I interviewed, everyone in my group was wearing a suit. Most of the girls wore skirts. Good luck!

I just received an interview invite today (applied mid feb) and was wondering if you guys think I should go to the interview? I have already been accepted to LECOM, LECOM-B, William Carey, RVU, and OSU-COM, will interview at AZCOM tomorrow.

I have heard mixed reviews about Touro and wanted to ask in the Touro thread to see if you guys think Touro has more to offer than any of the schools above? I am interested in specializing so do they have clinical rotations that compare with LECOM or AZCOM?

Quick question. Are you from Oklahoma? If so, take the offer from OSU-COM and don't look back.
 
Does anyone know if there are interview invites still going out? I did receive an email that said they can go through the end of May, but was curious if spots have been filled. I know they do not interview to fill a waitlist.

Yes, invites are still going out. They do interview until around May.. and I think a little more than about half the spots have been filled.. this is judging from the facebook page so don't take my word for it. Goodluck!🙂
 
Hey everybody! I am supposed to interview on Monday (4/11), but just got accepted to my #1 school yesterday so I will be canceling my interview today.

Hi

I had a quick question about the waitlist.

Many months ago I interviewed at TUCOM and was placed on the High-waitlist. Now I have been fortunate in that I have been accepted at 5 other schools, but I really had my heart set on TUCOM.

Any idea about when they will start pulling people off the waitlist?

Also, when I spoke with someone in admissions they told me that if I was on the high-waitlist it is almost a certainty that I will be accepted since they almost always get all the way through the high-waitlist and into the medium waitlist. Does anyone know if this is accurate? For those of us on the high-waitlist, is it a fairly safe bet that we will be accepted, or is it more iffy than that? Thanks.

I'm not really sure when they begin pulling people off the waitlist, but I have heard that the waitlist at Touro-CA moves quite a bit. Keep your head up, I think you still have a good shot 👍

Touro has 27 cadavers in their anatomy lab. From the first cut, dissections are 100% hands on and you get a bit of anatomy every semester. This way you have time to soak it all in. LECOM-B is a great school but as you know it is PBL based whereas Touro is Lecture based. Lectures are all recorded so you don't have to go to if you don't want to. Depends on what fits you better. LECOM anatomy uses prosections. There are a few bodies for you to study but limited dissection. Depends on if you like dissecting. Academically, Touro eases you into being a medical student in the first semester while LECOM hits you hard. I must say that I am very pleased with the anatomy program at TUCOM-CA.

TUCOM also emphasizes heavily on OMM. Consequently they have put in a lot of money(~$300,000) to renovate the OMM lab with multiple large screen TVs and adjustable OMM tables. If OMM and anatomy are important to you, Touro is definitely a top choice.

Don't know much about AZCOM but I hear they draw resources from their parent school CCOM which may prove beneficial in the long run.

I'd say check out Touro. You may love it. Campus is antique, yet beautiful. Some areas in Vallejo, on the island, and even the school itself may seem rundown but you can rest assured that the facilities that we need(Clinicals, Anatomy, OMM, Lecture Halls) are new and fully functional. In fact, like I mentioned, the OMM and Anatomy labs are superb!

I'm high-waitlisted too, and I had hear similar news from admissions about movement off the waitlist. Anyone hear anything different? I hope not!

I know it has been discussed, but I was hoping someone could help me understand how rotations work at TUCOM.

I know it is a lottery system, but once u go through the lottery, are you assigned 1 specific hospital, or 1 specific region, or are you bounced all around California and beyond for your core rotations?

For instance, I have been accepted to AZCOM and for their rotations, you are assigned a specific region and rotate through various hospitals within that region. I requested and was assigned to Los Angeles, so for my core rotations, I would be stationed in the LA area and rotate through a bunch of affiliated hospitals all within the LA region.

Does TUCOM have a similar way of doing things or are you bounced all around? I am just trying to figure out if year 3 students spend a month in 1 location, then have to travel hundreds of miles to their next location and so on. Anyone know?
 
It really depends where you go for rotations. There are sites where ALL of the rotations are at one hospital or between two hospitals close together. There are sites that are within a region and then there are sites that are split between regions, where for part of the rotations you could be in so cal or the central valley and somewhere else for the others. In the long run, TUCOM hopes to have all of their rotations in California only (but leave you with the options to do rotations out of state for electives if you wish and under other circumstances maybe other rotations). The hopes of being only in California stems from the school's mission statement.

It seems as though the whole situation gets a bad wrap, but having talked to people at other schools, I wouldn't want to be in their shoes. I personally will be in Long Beach for the majority of my rotations but will be coming to nor cal for two rotations (and this isn't the end of my world). Part of being a good doctor is being adaptable and not freak out.

I wanted to inquire about the MSM masters program at TUCOM CA. Does anyone know anything about this program in particular? I received a letter from Touro rejecting me for an interview but inviting me to one of their 10 spots in the MSM program?

is anyone in that program? Feel free to answer here or by PM on your impressions on the program and if you feel it helped you gain acceptance into medical school and prepare you adequately.

Hi Arc

I learnt about this program through my counselor at my undergraduate university. This special masters program was one of my many back up plans, so I do know a little about it. Basically they guarantee you an interview with the committee once you have completed the year while maintaining good grades.

I interviewed with Touro in February and met with a recent graduate of their program in Nevada. She interviewed with the rest of us and seemed quite prepared for it.

Cant say much more than that, I guess it just depends on your own priorities and goals. Hope that helped!

I am assuming, I don't really have a chance to get off the waitlist... if I am low waitlist candidate? Any suggestions to get placed higher now until they finish interviewing?

Does anyone know if any TUCOM students live in Berkeley and commute onto Mare Island?

Mapquest states that it is a 27 minute drive from Berkeley to Mare Island. That isn't too bad of a commute, but I would be concerned that traffic could make it a much longer commute than the stated 27 minutes.

For anyone familiar with the area, would there be significant traffic headed from Berkeley to Mare Island during morning rush hour, and from Mare Island back to Berkeley during afternoon rush hour? I would think that you would be going in the opposite direction of commuter traffic, but perhaps I am wrong. Can anyone comment on what kind of traffic I could expect in this situation?

Edit: I also wanted to ask about the attendance policy at TUCOM. Obviously labs would be mandatory, but is there a general attendance policy for lectures? Thanks.

you'd be going against traffic so i don't think you have to worry about traffic too much.

There are a handful of students who live in the Berkeley area actually. Commute isn't bad since you are going against traffic at both times of the day.
Attendance for lectures is not mandatory, and every now and then there are mandatory lectures. It all depends on your learning style. Labs are mandatory.

It was my understanding that movement off the waitlist begins in June. They interview through May depending on the class seat availability. Once interviews are done, the waitlist gets ranked and movement begins. Hopeful! I'm on the waitlist myself and hoping to be admitted.

Common' waitlist!!!! Anyone hear when the last date for interviews is? I called and talked to admissions and they told me that they normally get through the entire high waitlist (basically what others have said as well), But it would be really nice to know sooner rather then later. Also she said expect to hear at the very end of June/July.... :scared:

Just give it another week and a half. The $1000 tuition deposit is due on May 15th so I'm sure by then more people will withdraw their acceptance. Then they will have a better idea of how many they can take off the waitlist. Remember, patience is a virtue.
 
has anyone else received the invitation to apply to the accelerated MPH program, and is planning to do so? does anyone know how many are typically invited to apply: how many open seats there are for the program? thanks!

i don't know about the MPH program. I actually don't know a lot about it. But I will tell you right now, that if you want to bridge into the DO program, you should look into the MSMHS program instead. I heard through the grape vine that only 50% or so of the Accel. MPH people makes it into the program. However the MSMHS program is getting more support from the COM program.
 
Thank you whyrms. I have actually heard the same thing from quite a few people...personally I only applied to programs that offered an MPH (i worked at the PH dept for a year and loved it) and want to have the option to be able to work in a PH setting at some point in my career. I feel like the MSMHS would give me a better chance to bridge to COM, but it would do little for my professional profile later, in terms of what I want to do. Basically, I want the MPH over MSMHS, but I want the DO more. I just don't want to "waste" more time in the AMPH program if chances of getting into COM after are slim, if that makes sense

last interview day is may 23rd
 
Good to know! Thanks! Not trying to be too impatient but I was accepted to LECOM and they start July 23rd. I am from Sacramento and my husband works in Napa, so TUCOM would be a much more ideal choice for me. That and I absolutely fell in love with the school when I interviewed. The whole idea of a last minute cross country move thing is not so fun, so the sooner I know the better! Fingers crossed!!!

Just keep in mind there will be a $5 toll going towards Mare Island every day you go to school.

So the concensus is that Touro-Ca should start pulling from the waitlist in early to mid June?

I am on the High-Waitlist as well and while I've been accepted to other schools, I really want to end up at Touro-Ca.

I spoke with someone in admissions last week who told me that they didn't think they would start pulling from the waitlist until early JULY! But I see others are stating it would be early-mid June. Does anyone know for sure which it is?

I was told by admissions to expect "late June or early July". I got the impression that they were padding that answer a little bit to curb a flood of anxious calls come mid-June. This makes sense since then the only outcome would be an earlier than expected response rather than the opposite. The pace of movement from this thread last year started around June 8th and ramped up through the end of June. Who knows when the actual "first" person to be pulled off the list was notified. Personally, I hope this is the case this year! I too am on the high waitlist and really want to end up at TUCOM-CA.
 
Withdrew from Touro-CA last week. I hope my spot goes to one of you guys 👍

So for all of us waitlisters, which waitlist are you on?

I'm on the High Waitlist. From what I have heard and read, Touro usually has seats to offer all of those on the high-waitlist (though obviously this can vary on any given year).

I have my deposit down at AZCOM, but am REALLY hoping Touro pulls me off of the waitlist. Good luck everyone!
 
Hey theone1979- I am still waiting to hear from TUCOM as well. I was placed on the high wait list after my Nov 29 interview. I've already sent in a few updates...I was told that we could expect to hear from TUCOM sometime in June up to the first day of class. When are you planning on moving to AZ?
