Application cycle for TUCOM CA MSMHS program is steadily approaching (May 13, 2013). Applicants will be notified of acceptance status May 24, 2013.

"The average overall GPA for the class entering 2011 was 3.13, for the class entering 2012, 3.04. However, it is hard to say what a competitive GPA is for this program, since a number of factors are considered for admission, including the undergraduate institution, MCAT scores (if available), as well as motivation, exposure and knowledge of osteopathy. Letters of recommendation are also carefully read and considered.

There will be 15 spots in the class entering fall 2013." - Dr. Alan Miller, Program Director

Who's applying? Please provide stats cgpa/sgpa/mcat. I will update daily.

Applied:xf:
docnunes 3.47/3.44/No MCAT (Significant amount of grade replacement)

Accepted😀

This program WAS the best kept secret here in CA, so thanks for ruining that, docnunes. Just kidding.

Really, though, I like this program a lot. I applied a few weeks ago.

Some grade replacement for me (4-5 classes). cGPA: 3.3, sGPA: 3.4, MCAT: 30R.

Without grade replacement: cGPA 3.04, sGPA: 3.3.

To the stats you mentioned, I'd like to a few other details out there for people reading this thread in 2014 and on when they try to figure out their chances for getting in. I know that I only found 2 threads on Touro CA here, and people didn't say too much about their stats and backgrounds.

Dr. Miller and co. are also looking at our University almae matres, reasons for pursuing osteopathy, etc, so...

Compelling excuse for grades: I bombed a couple years of community college god knows how long ago. First in my family to attend college. I didn't know any better. Grade trend isn't a trend at all, it's night and day.

Osteopathic interests: I was in nursing school, before, and also, was a CNA for a few years. I believe in treating the patient, not just the paperwork. I also do fitness and health consulting, and do a ton of diet and well-being/fitness/etc work on people.

Alma mater: community college background, then went to a CSU for nursing school, returned to community college, transferred to UCLA. Degree in Biochemistry.

Also, I wonder if the GPA that Dr. Miller listed was with or without grade replacement? And, if they're using that science GPA spreadsheet that we filled out for science GPA? This would probably be different than ACOMAS c and s GPAs, and could make a big difference.

We have a similar history with a little twist. I too went to nursing school and decided nursing wasn't for me after working as a CNA. I was a CNA for roughly four years. So, I went back to school for me and obtained my degree is sociology. Absolutely great degree for personal growth and I am truly grateful that I majored in it.

I have a good amount of volunteering, osteopathic shadowing, and clinical experience (CNA and EMT).

I am worried about not having taken the MCAT and my little "wait what university?" almae matres. Which is, Holy Names University in Oakland CA.

Please keep me updated with your acceptance status.

I wonder how many applicants they receive for these 15 spots?😕

I did the same, actually... leaving nursing school because of CNA experiences. No one can blame us, I don't think, lol.

I think that they get a few hundred applications from what I've gathered. They invite people to apply to the MSMHS program that interviewed for the DO program and didn't get in, or that applied and didn't get interviewed, I'm not sure which. But they send out a couple hundred MSMHS application invitations to these people, and also have all of the regular postbaccalaureate crowd applying, too.

MDforMee did you try applying to med school yet? Your stats are competitive.

No, not yet. I will be this summer, though.

I asked Touro's MSMHS program about the overlap between dates of applying to their program vs applying to medical school, since I would have to accept or reject an admissions offer from Touro's MSMHS program before knowing anything about my secondary/interview status, too, and basically, there isn't a way for me to find out whether I'll have to do an SMP or not without committing to one, first.

I may not be attending Touro's MSMHS program, however. I was accepted to a MS program in Biomedical Imaging at UCSF yesterday, and will probably do it. The cool thing about that program is that it's basically learning medicine and doing research under people in radiology. Along with a thesis, research, personal experience/growth, etc, having a degree like that should hopefully open doors for me, especially since the UCSF name carries a lot of weight with most medical people, whoever they might be. I'm not counting on MD schools rolling out the red carpet because of it, but hopefully, I get into a DO school in California.

Anyhow, like I said, if I get in, I'll probably not go, so I'll give my seat to someone else. But who knows? I might still attend. If we both go, we should complain about how underpaid and overworked CNAs are over coffee, sometime. I haven't met an educational/job twin like me before. Haha.

MDforMee congratulations on the UCSF acceptance. That program looks great. But yes I agree, if we both end up at Touro a meet up is a must.

Good luck this cycle! I too would be applying but I stepped down from taking the MCAT as I don't have adequate time to study for it until after this October.

I'll be a rather late applicant for this, but I'm sending all of my materials off this week. Finally got it all together. =_=

I had a quick question for people who have already applied, do we need to send in official transcripts or unofficial one with our application?

All unofficial for now. If you're admitted, then they want the official.

Oh, and I called them today asking how many applicants they've had so far this year, and what their stats were, but they wouldn't tell me.

I said that I was calling and asking these questions because I have to accept or reject admissions offers from other masters programs ASAP, and I'm trying to get an idea of where I stand in the applicant pool so that I might be comfortable in rejecting an admissions offer or two so that I can still go to Touro if I want.

And I just sent in all of my stuff. And now the waiting...and keep us updated MD! Which number did you call by the way? Because I can't...seem to find a number to reach them at except for Dr. Miller's number.

Good that you're in. Hopefully this waiting isn't too bad... we should hear on May 24th, which is still a ways off.

Oh, and it's not Dr. Miller's number that you want. It's a Ms. Bible that you want to talk to if you have questions, and her contact info is:

(707)638-5914
[email protected]

They sent me an email when my application was reviewed as being complete, but I only dealt with Ms. Bible, so you may want to check and make sure that they've received everything if you don't hear back within the next few days or a week.

Also, it may help you to contact Ms. Bible and ask if you can send in your CV, too. Make sure that if you do, it lists your volunteer experience AND research experience, since the Touro MSMHS program doesn't ask us about these things in the application.

I get the feeling that since this program has a high matriculation rate into Touro COM, that it will be worth it to go the extra mile and make sure that they know you're a serious applicant, and competitive with their COM class outside of GPA, MCAT, or whatever other reason it is that you're doing this program and not applying directly to their COM.

I actually just went ahead and sent in my CV anyway. ^^; It's really just my MCAT and I just need a small boost in my GPA. My post bac pretty much gets me to the point where I can apply to SMPs. And a number of advisers have told me I have more than enough extracurriculars, so...-crosses fingers-

Okay, so a news update:

They've received around 90 applications for the entering 2013-2014 class. There's just one week left until applications are due (5/13/13).

I also asked if there were any more spots being opened, since I'd heard a rumor that there might be more than 15 this year, but they wouldn't tell me.

Hi all! I will unfortunately be submitting my application on the very last day before the deadline and I just wanted to know what you all think of my chances. I realize I should've gotten a jump on all of this but I have excuses you probably don't want to hear 🙁

I am a 4th year at UCI with a GPA of 2.97 (will be 3.0 when I graduate in a month). I got a 23 on the MCAT. I have no previous exposure to osteopathy besides a lot of online research. My GPA shows a progressive upward trend.

Also, I dont think that the people who wrote my letter of recommendation included the primary application number 🙁 . I did email Naisha Bible and informed her of this problem, but I didn't get a reply yet.

Writing this all out makes my hopes drop a little, but I look forward to any helpful people who can give me kind honest insight on how to proceed 🙂

Hey ELC, I wouldn't worry too much about the letters. I don't think my writers did that either, but if you're unsure, try call Naisha Bible. Her number is on this thread as well. Not sure about the chances of getting in, but since the closing date was yesterday, they'll probably have 90 to probably over a 100 apps for 15 slots. Let's just wish everyone luck.
xD

The waiting game sucks. Was there last year. Just wanted to wish you all good luck. =)

Hey guys

I also applied to this. I read somewhere that you can be "overqualified" since they really want to give the spots to those who really need it. I just wanted to confirm if this isn't false information. Thanks!

It was from different threads (multiple sources) and I can't remember exactly where. It was a while back and it'll take a lot of digging to find but this is one example. Ctrl F the word "overqualified"

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=11267944

If they do accept you, does that mean you aren't a good candidate for medical school? Hahaha.

I think a lot of that in the other thread is speculation, and it's at a different Touro. Post up your stats and admissions decision tomorrow and maybe we will figure it out.

Hey Leehom100, can I ask what your stats are?

Congrats! Now, I'm way more nervous since I didn't get a call.

:/

I don't get it...they said May 24th and now everyone is going to get nervous because one person says they got a phone call a day early. I hate this game 👎

Let's just wait until tomorrow and then we all can get bat**** insane with nervousness for real. =D

I didn't get a call either.

Congratulations Leehom! It's an awesome program and I have no doubt you will love it. =)

Good luck to the rest of you guys!

Are most of you from CA? I'm curious how many from out of state applied.

Hi guys, have any of you heard back today? any calls or emails? I've been checking my email constantly ever since the last post about the call acceptance lol .... Im so nervous!

I just got the acceptance email! So excited to attend in the fall! Anyone else hear back?

Nothing yet! They must be drafting the rejection email...

Hey guys so I was reading the FAQ on their site and its says "Decisions for acceptance will be rendered by May 24th and accepted candidates will be notified both by email and US mail" so does that mean that those ppl that are rejected will not hear back?

and Congrats! for the acceptance!!! 🙂

I just got my acceptance email, too! So stoked! XD

I just got a "MSMHS-COM admissions decisions delayed". I guess that's not a rejection letter...

delayed? umm maybe they put you on hold or wait-listed, which is better than not hearing from them

For the ppl that got accepted, would you guys mind telling us your stats? to see what they are looking for and if I even have a chance lol

Hey Happiness,

If previous years are an indicator, you will be notified if you are placed on the wait list. I am not certain if people are rejected outright or not. I don't think that this is the case. So you will hear back one way or another soon enough. If you are placed on the wait list, stay hopeful. A number of applicants are "TYPICALLY" taken off the list and enroll in the Fall. Hope that helps! Congratulations to all of you who were accepted. Eager to meet you all soon 🙂

Hey guys, does anyone know if today is the ONLY day acceptances are coming out?

I was also delayed. I don't think this means the wait list, another weekend of being on edge...

I just got the admission delayed email too. I'm glad they at least let us know about the delay. We're all in this together, stay hopeful!!
