TUCOM-CA students accepted for fall 05

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Current 1st year here, just wanted to say hello and congrats to you all! I am from the East Coast (Long Island - bth7, maybe we can meet up over the summer) and I live in the dorms. Rooms are on the small side, yes, but the living situation is quite nice. It is *great* to be able to walk down the hill in the morning and get right to class, plus I can go back to my room for lunch if I don't feel like buying it at the cafeteria. (The cafeteria's food is very good, but buying every day can get a bit pricey.) There is a sense of community here in the dorms, and I'll be living here again next year, so anyone with questions related to that can e-mail me at [email protected]
I feel like there was something else I wanted to address... Oh well, I forget, but my point is... congrats to all of you who got accepted!! I'm looking forward to meeting all of you. Now enjoy your summer - you'll be working hard soon enough! (Old man - that means no more Biochem!! You'll get plenty while you're here. Trust me.)

Oh, I remember what else I wanted to say! Somebody asked about married folks living in the dorms. My best friend here is married, lives in the dorms, her family lives in LA. This does not appear to be an uncommon situation, as I know of at least one or two others in the dorms who are living the married life. So, while families do not live in the dorms, people in all stages of relationships/family life do. We even had a dorm "trick or treat" for my friend's two kids, ages 3 and 8. They'd come up for Touro's Halloween party, which was attended by students, faculty, and families of students. People seem very welcoming to family members. There is even a support group for family of students - I don't know too much about this other than its existence, as I don't have a family of my own.

A little off topic, but my gf just told me that the incoming first years are going to get Touro e-mail addresses!!! That just adds to the jealousy of our getting our white coats before them.
Hi Sara!

Hi Sara!
...speaking of white coats...When is the white coat ceremony for Class of 2009?

Hi Sara!

Hi to you. 🙂
Oh, don't worry - they've assured us that we are the "next priority" as far as e-mail addresses are concerned. The new pharmacy students will have wireless internet access first, the new OMS1s will have their e-mail addresses first and early white coats, and the class of 2008 will have... ???

I'm sure they have something good in store for us to make up for all this non-preferential treatment 🙄

Anyone know when financial aid package due...still need to choose a lender? Any reccomendations?

I think you are just supposed to get that in as soon as possible, that way you can get everything taken care of before classes.

Just finished - it was very simple. After I got my pin from the dept of education - I filled out the fafsa. I then went to T.H.E and completed the online application - signed it with my pin and that was it (I hope)!

I completed the financial aid forms from Touro and sent out request for transcripts...am I forgetting anything??? 😕

HELLO! 😀 I've been keeping up with this thread since i was accepted in march but this is my first opportunity to post. You all seem super cool and i'm so excited to be part of this class. I am from Sacramento which is only a 45 min drive from Vallejo. I plan on staying in Vallejo but not on campus because i really need my own kitchen and living area to bum around in. I've been looking for places the past 2 weekends and am going up this weekend too. I'm looking at 2 or 3 bedroom homes in the $400/pp range that are within 5 miles from campus. Anyone else interested in rooming let me know!

Don't forget to send in your 2nd deposit 👍

Congratulations mbarb! Welcome to the Class of 2009! 😀

I'm from Sacramento also! Congratulations on getting in! Although I'm not sure where I'm going to live yet. I guess I better get rollin' on that.

Is there anyone out there who is planning on living alone? I've lived by myself for 3 years now and I don't know if I want to give that up.

oldManDO and anyone else:
Don't forget to get your physical and your shots up to date along with a TB test (the forms are on the school website). You also have to complete an entrance counseling exam for the financial aid package.

That's just the grad test on edfund. You can retake that as many times as you need.

Hey all! I'm a first year at Touro now and my roomate and I are moving out of our apartment right after exams. She's moving in with her boyfriend and I'm moving in with another friend so our apartment will be available June 1st. It's in Glencove which is the nice part of Vallejo. It's two bedrooms, two baths, walk in closets, fireplace, amazing view of the carquinez bridge and the water. Awesome running trails, two swimming pool (one a lap pool), workout room, etc. And the best part is that deposit is covered so you wouldn't have to deal with that and you'd get our money back to keep at the end. The reason for that is our lease is not officially up until July 31st so as incentive for someone else to move in, we're going to cover the deposit. After it's up, a 9 or 12 month lease can be signed. If you're interested, PM me! Congratulations everyone! Enjoy your last months of freedom, Kristin

Was there an official notice to send more deposit money? The only correspondane that I received from Touro was from Dr. Haight about making sure that we were living a health lifestyle...and then he says at the end, "Don't forget the next installment of the deposit due May 15"....do we call the registrar and pay? Or is there a formal form we fill out and send with a check?

Also, do we have to send our transcripts to Touro? Never received any indication to do so...

Thanks!

Didn't you get that other letter that said to send in your new transcripts as well as make sure you send in immunization and physical forms?
I think it came in the same envelope as the one from Dr. Haight.
Or....it came w/the letter that told us to be on the lookout for the listserv sign ups...?
Either way, I think you're supposed to do all that soon.
=)

The official notice to send in the tuition (2nd) deposit came in the letter/receipt confirming that our initial $2K deposit was received. You can call the Bursar's office and pay over the phone. They'll eventually send you a receipt confirming your payment. The notice for sending transcripts came in another letter from the Registrar's office (due by June 15).

hello! i am so excited to finally be able to post, as i just got my email confirmation today (i interviewed april 5th for anyone reading who may have been in my group...)! all of the info about the housing situation has been pretty helpful. i toured the dorms, and i can say that i am not going to be living there, but i am not sure what i will be doing otherwise. i was afraid to look too far into it, rather than jinx myself....but keep up the running convo about it, as i am currently nowhere near cali. that about wraps up what i wanted to say, at least until i get my info packet and start thinking about moving. just wanted to say hello to everyone!

Hey! Congrats everyone!

I need a roommate!
Looking at Spyglass for housing. Are we going to get a list of people that need matches or have rooms, etc?

well...in the email that i received today, it was mentioned that we will be getting notified in "early spring" about signing up for that listserv business. during the discussion with dr haight on interview day, he suggested that this would be where those types of posts would be. it seems like it should be considered early spring now, but that is just me. when i moved to miami, i looked a lot at rent.com and apartments.com. the only problem with those is that it really helps to be familiar with the area. they just showed pix which would look amazing, but when i got to the property, i found that while the complex was great, the surrounding area was, lets just say not cool. i am hoping that we will get some sort of list that gives owner descriptions and local info...

I interviewed on Monday and got my acceptance e-mail today. I am so excited because I applied EXTREMELY late and felt intimidated by all of the other applicants in my group. I have a friend who is a 1st year there and he has been giving me the heads up on the living situations in the area. I would be happy to try to pass all of the info on.

congrats to all the recently accepted - look forward to meeting you in the fall. 😀

that would be excellent. i am really going to try to have this sorted out before i move...i waited until i was actually in miami when i moved there, since i did not know anyone and it was a frustrating situation...i ended up living in a hotel with all of my things in storage for like two weeks.

Big welcome to all the new acceptees. 🙂 A lot of great housing references already on this thread, so hope you guys take a look! craigslist.org is definitely your friend, as is the MISL website.

By the way, just saw this article in the local newspaper today. If this doesn't excite you.. well, then nothing will. 🙂 (I posted earlier in the thread that the TUCOM-MI director of clinical education mentioned new AOA-approved residencies in Fairfield... I'm sure associated to this new growth in spending.)

http://www.dailyrepublic.com/articles/2005/04/23/top_stories/news03.txt

FAIRFIELD - Anticipating that Solano County's population growth will continue, the health-care industry plans to pour millions into future expansion projects here, industry leaders said Friday.

...
Solano County is the fastest growing county in the Bay Area, projected to increase one-third by 2025.
...
Solano County's greatest need is critical care services, said Gary Passama, NorthBay chief executive officer. NorthBay plans to bring more advanced specialty care to Solano County and someday upgrade its trauma services, he said.
..
"The growth of Solano is unique," Romer said. "We know people are coming here."

The health-care providers face some challenges as they grow such as recruiting enough skilled physicians and nurses and managing the growing number of uninsured patients, Passama said.

The average age for doctors and nurses in California is over 50, and the state's high concentration of managed care and high cost of living makes it difficult to recruit younger physicians, said John Ray, chief executive officer of Sutter Regional Medical Foundation.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS to all the recent accepts....I look forward to meeting you all soon. Now, for those of you concerned about finding housing...I am located in sacramento and am lucky to be close enough to Vallejo to drive up and check out many of the places available. I have been steaking out the surrounding areas of Mare Island for a month or so now and have been up to see several places. Though most of what i've seen has been dissapointing, just today i looked at a really cute vacant 3bd/2ba house only 2miles from the island and 5 miles from campus!! It's totally remodeled and clean. The owner is very nice and prefers renting rooms out to us... TOURO students!!!! I believe the rooms are in the $400/mo range but probably a little more if you wanted the master bedroom w/ it's own bathroom. The owner did not seem to have a problem with the defered move in date (Like i said she seemed really nice). Utilities would be split among those living there and there is a washer/dryer, garage & yard for our use. I plan on taking one of the rooms and if you are interested, or want to know more about me (prospective roommate) let me know asap....it's a good sized house and would even be good for a couple.

I would be interested. That price ($400+) sounds alot better than $850 for a 1-bedroom. I will PM you my e-mail address and cell #. I can call you if you want because I have free calling time on the weekends. Thanks.

Howdy,

This is my first post ever! Woohoo! And I'm excited to say I'll be joining you guys at Touro in August.
For people looking for apartments apartmentratings.com is excellent. It gives reviews from actual tenants of many apartments found on rent.com and apartments.com
This website helped me narrow down my search of twenty or so apartments to three!

Take care and wish you all the best!

after a bit of dinking - I have a MS Word version of the schedule. If you would like a copy send me a PM. Thanks MSDO for the schedule. Now I can really start worrying about all of the bio-chem and nerou-anatomy 😀

Hello everyone!

I decided to go to Touro a while ago, but I'm finally posting to introduce myself after spending a ton of time reading the 12 pages of this thread. You guys rock--you're so resourceful! Thanks for all the housing tips. I'm going to check out some neighborhoods and places this weekend.

Anyway, I'm glad I made the right decision to go to Touro. I can't wait to meet you all this August! 🙂

Hey now that we have a schedule (and to keep this thread alive 😀 ) we sdn'r should make it a point to meet during- on or around - orientation - including heech - pj's sdn liaison. It's going to be an interesting year just based on the schedule. It would be nice to say hi and get to know one another. I am taking July off from the donut factory to get mentally prepared and move into our yet to find home in the Fairfield area – so I will be walking the dogs and playing with the kids (I told you I was an old man!!!) – my schedule is open!

I'm good for a little SDN reunion ...(even though I’m kind of new to the thread)....

On a different note has anyone figured out which lender they are going with. I am totally lost on this one ...are all of the preferred lenders pretty much the same. Any light shed on this topic would be appreciated.

Hey everyone, I know it's been a while since I've posted. Let's just say I've been having a little too much fun finishing off my senior year. 😀 I can't wait to meet all of you in August. Congrats to all the newly accepted! 👍 Does anyone know when classes officially start? I saw that orientation is on the 4th. On another note, I'm definitely looking for a roommate. I'm pretty flexible on living, but I was hoping not to live Vallejo. Anyone else looking in the surrounding areas?

I'm interviewing at TUCOM-MI on Monday and wondering if it's too diffiucult to live outside of Vallejo. My girlfriend seems intent on Berkeley, but I'm hesitant because of the hellish stretch of highway up to Vallejo. Any thoughts on that?

Been reading this thread for a week or so and I really hope I get in so I can join all of you next year. Wish me luck!

Good luck!

Well, OldMan was thinking about commuting from Fremont before... so Berkeley is almost tame by comparison. 🙂

I think the commute would probably be a bit of a pain. As the crow flies, freeway driving time is probably only about 20 minutes from MI. But of course, crows don't get caught in traffic (even though you're somewhat against traffic)... and I'd never want to live in any part of Berkeley that was adjacent to the freeway, so add another 10-15 minutes to that. 30-40 minutes?

Is your gf going to Berkeley? Maybe you can compromise and end up in between. Pinole?

Actually, the GF is working in Palo Alto. Berkeley is in between (her commute will be much, much worse). I guess I should focus on the interview first, right? I've been practicing my answers while walking to work. I fit right in with all the other people talking to themselves here in SF. Any last minute advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

JUST RELAX (I know, easier said than done) ---i think a somewhat stumbling but genuine answer is better than a perfect but totally over-rehersed one.....also get to know your fellow interviewees as much as you can that morning...it will help come interview time....Good Luck :luck:

Yikes, that sounds just like OldMan's situation. You might wanna touch base with him on options!

If you guys are really going to commute in both directions, I'd get away from the 880 entirely. Maybe you should follow the flock of other former SF'ers and move into the Walnut Creek/Pleasanton area. You can drive up to MI on the 680 (30-40 minutes?), and maybe your girlfriend can preserve her sanity by taking the train.

Oh, one last solution for ya! How about the Ferry? Stay in the City, and take the 50 minute ferry ride right into Vallejo every morning from the Ferry terminal. Get caught up on sleep and reading along the way. The commute down to PA on the 280 is pretty painless in comparison to all the other options.

Im considering the ferry option and wondering if its a bad idea. Has anyone done this or is seriously considering it?

i'm not considering it, but seeing that the average rents (and cost of living) in SF are higher than the average rents in the vallejo area, it doesn't seem financially wise. tack on the roundtrip ferry fare (something in the range of $15, not sure of the exact price) and the option seems even more unappealing. unless, of course, you have a compelling reason to stay in the city.

don't get me wrong; i currently work there (despite a 2 hour+ commute from fremont) and love the city enough to want to settle there some day, but it just doesn't make financial sense at this point in my life. as of now, i'll be happy driving there once a week or every other for some good food and chinese groceries (although richmond/oakland is also a good alternative for that).

MasterShake and OldMan... where did you come up with this?? I checked tumi.edu and only found the 04-05 schedule????????

I'm caught in the horns of a dilemma... accepted to Touro-MI (which i Loooooooooved) and still have another interview (Rosalind Franklin) at the END of this month (24th). The thing is... I can't get all excited about touro until i know for SURE that that's where I'm going to go... so I feel like i'm kind of getting gypped on this whole excitement deal!! I know, i know... boo hoo hoo... people would sell their relatives to be in our position.

I had a question for you guys though... i went to the T.H.E. website (www.northstar.org) and it asked if you want to apply for fed or private loans (you can only choose one). Wasn't FAFSA to apply for fed loans?? Am i missing a major piece of info??????

Thanks everyone!
Christine

If you go to the touro website and go to departments, then click on BSF Basic science foundations...I think it's there if I remember correctly.

I'm getting nervous just looking at the calendar. I can't believe it, in 3 months we'll be at TUCOM-MI. Can't wait to meet everyone! 🙂

I am actually more nervous for the move. I am comming from Eastern Washington (Pullman.... Go Cougs!!!!). I think that I will be heading down around July 15th. That is only 2 1/2 months for me.

Someone may have posted this already--but Dr. Haight's letter mentioned that a listserv would start near the end of April. Has anyone received an e-mail about it yet? I have yahoo, and I get tons of spam. I check my spam box for Touro messages, but I just want to make sure I didn't accidentally erase something. Thanks!
