TUCOM Class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, I just sent a letter to TUCOM giving up my seat that I purchased for $2000.🙄

Hope that helps some poor soul who may have no acceptances and really wants to be a doctor.🙂

Slickness,

I understand that you are upset that you lost $2000, but I am really sick and tired of you disrespecting my school... Yes, the quick turn around for a deposit is harsh, but is there any other school that gets back to you no later than two weeks of your interview?? (like half of the interviewees find out with four days!)
Is there any other school whose admissions office will get back to you within 24 hours if you email or call them with a question?? Do you not see that in addition to being a business, Touro is doing everything that they can to build a cohort of students that really want to and are proud to call themselves students of Touro University? (which, in my opinion, is smart, admirable and advantageous for the students that end up attending.)

Just count your blessings, which include the the fact that you got to secure a spot in medical school... there are a bunch of people that would trade places with you in a second, pay twice as much as you have during the application process and be thankful...

Enjoy COMP or Temple...

Now, if you had just called me back after talking to the Mon-ster...

😉

relax..(imagine you put down 2000 dollars for a school that you later realized that you not going, you would be upset too)

Wow where did that come from Brian. That was very uncharacteristic of you. If you reread my post, I in no way disrepected TUCOM. I hope someone who doesn't have an acceptance gets my spot.😕

I know you guys are going to hate me for saying this, but I interviewed at TUCOM last month and got accepted. So there is a possibility that I will be with you guys next year if I get rejected from everywhere else I am applying to this year. So for everyone who wishes me not to be with then in TUCOM next year, pray that I get accepted somewhere else in the near future.

Sorry dude, it doesn't matter if you are the good, the bad or the ugly, matriculated at Touro or not, I am afraid that the event would still be as boring to any public in general as mine

Hmm. Who said this quote? I hope they did get in somewhere else.

I just realized looking back on this thread that I may come across as kinda protective about Touro. I don't mean any offense to anybody and I am tired of defending this school to people that aren't even attending next year. If you liked TUCOM, if it has something to offer to you personally, if the students, faculty, and admin seems like good people, then please come and join us. I'm proud of Touro and I'm proud of my classmates.

Congrats to everyone joining us next year.

Tiffany

Hey TUCOMers!
My deposit is due tomorrow for TUCOM. Why did you choose TUCOM over all the other Osteopathic school? (Other than its location?) I am originally from the bay area and would love to go back (I am currently in SD) but I don't want that to be the only reason to choose one school over another. I also have been accepted to UHS and I am having a really difficult time deciding. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

AMK

Just received my acceptance today. Will be sending my deposit soon. Look forward to meeting you all in the fall!

from the mist and fog, I return...

where are my new classmates??!!

BUMP!

Brian, I have a question for you since you seem to know a lot about Touro. I interviewed there back at the beginning of December. They have decided to put me on hold. It is the first year they have done this so they have no idea what will happen. I loved Touro and would be enthralled to attend, so do you have any info pertaining to the hold status at TUCOM?
Thanks

mickdogg81,

It is my understanding that this is the first time the touro adcom has ever put applicants on hold status... Unless I am mistaken, being on hold means that the adcom has chosen to postpone making a decision on you application; so its not a rejection, nor an accpetance. Dr. Haight is notorious for making the admissions process as quick and humane as possible so I can only assume that he has asked the adcom to resolve applicants like you who they have chosen to put on hold...

The only advice that I have to offer is to continue to communicate with Dr. Haight... Continue to update the office of admissions with anything new you might have done and if TUCOM is your top choice school, make sure that comes through in your coorespondence as well... If you were able to establish a rapport with the people on your interviewing committee, maybe you could touch bases with them too...

Most importantly stay positive and don't give up!!!... I was handed my decision at basically the last moment possible and it is absolutely useless to get bummed out at the idea that you might not get in (although it did cross my mind every once and again)...

I am going to mediate on your situation and post some later...

Thanks Brian, I am always hoping for the best.....let's see how things turn out. In terms of maintaining a relationship with Touro, I have kept in touch with Dr. Haight and my interviewers as well. Gotta keep it rollin..........

If I remember correctly from the interview, Dr. Haight told us that there were three "holds": high, medium and low, and that they would tell you which you were on your letter....

Did you recieve any info like this? If you did, I think he said that high meant likely to move, medium not so much and low nearly impossible.

I would definitely email Dr. Haight with any questions though
Good luck!

Hi everyone
I am new to the board and I was hoping some of you could give me a bit of advice..... I have an interview at TUCOM 1-21-04 and I am nervous as can be. Is the panel format tough? I am very anxious to see the campus because my Grandfather was stationed there for a time during WWII. Any info or helpful hints would be appreciated.

mickdogg81,

In reference to three "holds": high, medium and low as alluded to by jbernet1, high, medium, and low are actually rankings given to people who are placed on the the waitlist... it is my understanding that previous to this application, when deciding on an applicant, the adcom had five options when evaluating an applicant; accept, reject, and then high, medium, or low waitlist. This year the adcom has added the option of "hold" which is basically not making a decision until a later time... Have you gotten any new coorespondence from Dr. Haight? *fingers crossed hoping for good news*

Baditude,

Congratulations!!! I know of a ton of people that would kill fo an interview and I remember once upon a time I offered a kidney for one... You should be very proud of yourself right now, and hopefully not at all nervous (yeah, right!) I wish I could impart to you some words of wisdom with respect to the interview, but I don't think I did that well on my interview day... but a couple good friends of mine totally hit home runs on their interview days and I can totally put you in contact with them... just send me an email next chance you get...

That's it for now...

Hey Brian,

Anyone I know that did well on their interviews?

😉

Brian's interview has been postponed to a date to be determined (as should have been assumed since you didn't get coorespondence... i.e. a picture and text message is forthcoming!!)

Brian,
I last heard from Dr. Haight before X-mas. He basically said everything was on schedule for the Las Vegas campus and that those on hold would try to be resolved near the end of January. He stated that, once again, we are neither accepted or rejected but that was about it. I was wondering if this is considered better than a waitlist??? Still hoping for the best!

mickdogg81,

If I had to choose between being on the waitlist and being placed on hold, I think I would choose the latter because being on hold gives you the oppurtunity to still have a hand in swaying the ad com to reneder a decision in your favor; sending updates, new transcripts and recommendations, etc. You can stillsend the previous if you are on the waitlist, but a decision will have already been made on your application, and you would be sending supplemental info with the hope that it would increase your chances of getting chosen of the waitlist (which won't occur until a few weeks before school starts, right?)

But then we have to factor in the new Las vegas campus... I have a hankering that those currently being placed on the waitlist will eventually be given the opportunity to either stay on the waitlist for the Mare Island campus or accept a seat at the Las Vegas campus... from this vantage point, being on the waitlist becames significantly more palatable, right???

I remember the stress of not knowing about school... I wish there was something else I could do, but it is all in your hands... kick ass and stay positive!

hit me if there is anything else I can do...

So last night I had an awesome dinner with a couple of TUCOM first years, a TUCOM PA student, a fellow 2008er, and a person that is interviewing on Wednesday, and I can't begin to tell you how awesome everyone affliated with Touro is and how excited I am to start school come August... I know I have always had this ridiculously rosy outlook, especially when it comes to my school, but I have just been soooo lucky to meet so many awesome people through the application process and I know it is only going to get better once I officially start school...

That being said, I know there are some new people out there who have been accepted and have sent their deposit to TUCOM... Stand up and let yourself be known!!!

That's it for now...

Brian

Hey Brian!!! I have to extend a big thank you to you and your friends I met on Monday night!!!! I had a blast talking to all of you and it certainly made the interview process stress free! I have now assumed the same thrill for TUCOM that you have and I am hoping desperately for a seat in the 2008 class! Thanks again!

I was not granted an interview. Would you know why?

probably mcat, bad essay, or something more insidious.....

oye... if i could only get into the minds of those on the adcom... I don't see why you couldn't get in touch with Dr. Haight and hopefully flesh out some specifics as to why they have made the decision that they did... I wish I could be more helpful...

Hey everyone!
I have received the dreaded hold category for the 2008 TUCOM class and I am very down about it. I know that I still have a fair chance of getting in but the uncertainity is getting to me. I know of two people in my interview group who were offered spots and will not be accepting them so maybe that is a good sign for me. I hope I will be seeing those of you accepted come August!

hi fellow tucomers!

for those interested in or accepted to the las vegas campus, did you hear the whole cashman center deal is apparently a bust?

word is, your school will either be in a closed VA clinic in north las vegas or a warehouse out in henderson. they may be looking at other sites too. on the bright side, they have all of 5 MONTHS to sort this out.

i s*it you not kiddies, this is real.

welcome to tucom.

Ruh Roh. How could something like that happen? Where did you get this information?

JB

how could it happen?

beats me. i could say a lot here but i'll choose not to because soon it's time for me to go drinkin'. anyway, in short, word is that some bigwigs in vegas were opposed to the deal.
(if you're interested in more of my opinions on tucom in general, look up one of my first posts.)

my source?

someone who would know these things...this is a reputable source. it would be a simple matter of picking up the phone and calling the school to verify this information. that is if the school hasn't told you already. i'm sure one of you enterprising folks out there can get more information on this if you really want to.

good luck.

Well I did call TUCOM today and it turns out you're right, DrGiggles. What a bummer. Now I guess we'll have to wait and see what is going to happen. Personally, I'm a little scared. I'm just hoping we don't end up studying in a run-down warehouse. Oh well though. Whatever happens, happens. I'll just wish for the best.

JB

sorry dude (or dudette). i wish it weren't so and i can definitely appreciate your concern. i'm concerned myself. i will keep my fingers crossed in the hopes that this works out for all of us.

i will also post more info as i hear it.

Damn, just when you thought all was going well. Something big must have happened...

Hey TULV Class of 2008!

I recently put up a website for us at SinCityMed.com. Check it out if you want. Also, I'm buying a condo and I might need a roomate. Interested?

Did anyone else receive the packet offering the opportunity to switch from the MI campus to the LV campus? Just wondered what everyones plans were. 😕

Hi everyone, I just joined sdn and I just wanted to say I look forward to meeting everyone next year at tucom MI.

Hi everybody!

I've been accepted, and I have to say that Dr.H and the campus are awesome!

I loved my interview group and we still keep in touch. We're going to be a cute lil bunch! (except probably not so cute during the block tests! geez..)

See you all in the fall!

Hi everyone! So school begins in just over 3 months, I'm so excited to get to San Fran and start learning! (i've been out of school for two years so it's been a while) Any outdoor enthusiasts out there....climbers, surfers, snowboarders?? There's so much to do so close to us, can't wait! Looking forward to meeting you all.......Kristin

Hi everyone! I will most likely start attending TUCOM this summer and look forward meeting everyone. I have a few questions about TUCOM, if it's not too much trouble.

-Are there any grocery stores, restaurants, or shopping malls near the school?

-How are 3rd and 4th year clinical rotations done? Where do most students do their rotations?

Thanks.

Received my financial aid award letter in the mail yesterday! Anyone know what the tutition for 2004-05 year will be or when we will get a book list? I don't want to take out too many loans, but it's hard to make your budget without those key numbers, you know. Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I'm still waitlisted at Touro and really would like to attend the Vegas campus. If any of you have any thoughts on what to do other than write a letter of interest (which is going out today), I would really appreciate it. I'm also planning on sending transcripts from this semester in a few weeks and hope that something good will happen. Thoughts? I'm out of ideas. 😡

Go to the TUCOM website and look at the student survival guide, all that stuff is listed there.

I am a little curious about this as well. During my interview the student on our interview board explained it like this: There are a certain number of clerkships at various locations and each class decides how to choose who goes where. For example, her class decided that married students with kids should pick first, based on the needs of their family. Then married students without kids pick next and finally single students pick last, the idea being each group has a different set of responsibilities and those with kids or spouses should get to stay close to their families, if desired. That was just how her class did it. I understand in the past a lot of students rotated through Las Vegas, with the campus opening up there, that may change.

Anybody else with more information.?

Greetings all! Sorry to be tardy to the party, but I thought I'd jump in and say hey. Hey Hey!!! I'll be at TUCOM-MI this fall (at the frickin' beginning of August), so you can all meet me then. I'll be the one who seems quiet and shy, but when you get to know me, you realize I'm actually just dang boring. The Internet is my real home, and my digital alter-ego is the real me, so if you want to get to know me, email me or something.

That said, I'll be praying that our class is a great group of guys and gals that are just stoked to be entering a new season at Touro. We'll be great doctors, and I can't wait to get in good with everybody and share our successes together. It'll be tough, but we'll make it. Together. (Cue piano and strings.)

Here's to the future!

Oh yeah, and I'll be watching this thread for info about the 3-4 rotation situation. I'm wondering how easy it would be to line up a whole set of rotations in one location. My fiance (nurse) would like to know, too. 🙂

maile,

"near the school" is a relative term... there are not any restaurants, stores, or malls on Mare Island proper, but everything you need is just a short drive (10 min) away. Safeway, Costco, Olive Garden, Chevy's, etc, etc... The closest shopping mall is in Fairfield which is a good 20+ min drive...

As zregle pointed out, each class determines how rotations are distributed...some classes have opted for a priority based system, others have distributed rotations via lottery (I know this sounds scary, but it has worked out in the past because even though you may not get drawn until the end of the lottery, there was still opportunity to trade with classmates and such). Las vegas has always been a popular rotation site and should continue to be so... Unless I am mistaken 30+ students are starting their rotations in Vegas shortly...

I want to post more, but it just hit me that I am very hungry... I will be back in a little...

Hi all,
I was also accepted TUCOM-Nevada (Brian, this is the girl who interviewed in March in jeans!!). Just wondered if you guys knew about a dress code/attendance policy.. I don't remember this being mentioned, so I'm assuming there is none (I hope?). Ug, I just read that posting from NSUCOM's policy- horrific! Anyway, thanks for the info. Also, I guess we'll be there freakishly early- orientation August 1st, class starting the 4th. Hmm...

I got into TUCOM too and am considering going there because of my interest in the DO philosophy. So I am currently deciding between TUCOM and another school I would like to go to, mostly because of the full scholarship I got from the other school. But it'll be nice to live in vegas for a couple of years! So I might be with you guys in TUCOM next year.

hey whats up brian
you said in your message that you could give me some pointers for the interview...could you please???
