Tuesday Tips with Apply Point: Create Your Outline

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
After doing some brainstorming, you will want to consider how you’ll anchor and organize your personal statement. Medical school admissions committees are looking for you to demonstrate high potential in the areas of critical and creative thinking, problem solving, leadership, teamwork, empathy, and resilience. You will want to show the reader your abilities in some of these areas through story. Remember to stay focused. In your Personal Statement, you will not be telling them your whole life story (an overview of your experiences is what your Work and Activities is for). You will be writing from one area of expertise at a time. For example, if you have an impressive MCAT score and strong academic credentials, you may wish to use your essay to take the reader on a deep dive into your most meaningful leadership experience and/or show your empathy and ability to connect with others unlike yourself. Conversely, if you have a multitude of experiences showcasing your humanitarian side, you may want to write about your commitment to a research project in order to demonstrate your ability to thrive in a challenging academic environment.
