According to the Student Survival Guide from last year (the one that V'10 wrote for V'11), "discounted veterinary care is offered at the Foster Hospital for Small Animals. Office visits and registration are free, and treatments, medications, and food are all 40% off the usual rate."

In addition, "Hills offers free dog and cat food to vet students; all you have to do is fill out a short survey about the domestic animals that you own and the pet food that you use. In this program you receive two bags of food each month (canned food is available as well). Hill's also offers heavily discounted Hill's Science Diet and Prescription Diet from the Foster Hospital for Small Animals. The cost to you is 60% off the retail price, plus sales tax. You must have your pet registered with the hospital to order. Iams offers free dog and cat food through the "Food for Thought" program. Each month you will be notified of an educational article on Iams's website, accompanied by a quick and easy quiz. Your reward for completing the quiz is one free bag of dry dog or cat food, or one case of canned food."

Okay, so my next question would be, do you know if doctors perform dentals/extractions? My cat Harry has an extra set of adult premolars on the bottom, and I'm debating whether I should have them extracted where I currently work or if I should wait. A tech (not licensed) would do it where I work, and the whole situation makes me nervous.

At my last appt for our two dogs, we paid something like $10 for 2 physical exams, 3 vaccines, and a HW test. Basically, everything was free except for some portion of the bordetella vacc.

I'm not sure how surgical procedures are billed, but I know they're discounted. We did have to take one of our dogs to the ER one day, and I know that the fee just to walk through the door was waived b/c I'm a student. I don't remember the final bill, but after now having been working in the ER/ICU for several months, I know it was significantly less than if I were not a student there.

Hills offers one bag of food for free each month, and I think you pay $5 per bag after that. Pick-up is on campus once a month. Purina offers one free bag per month (and ships it for free to your home). I think other companies offer discounted food for students when it's obtained via script through the hospital (but I don't know the specifics on that).

You guys should be getting your V'12 Survival Guide sometime this month, I think. Enjoy your summer; I know we're all looking forward to meeting you all in Aug!
