I know this has been mentioned before and I hate to beat a dead horse, but Tufts is the one school that I have heard zilch from after the app complete notice that I really care alot about. I know they only interview on Tuesdays, but does anyone know where they are in terms of filling their class or how long interview season will last??
i keep calling their office but apparantly they only have live people answer phones from 9-12 and I always get to calling outside of those hours..
so any info would be helpful

Hi Goose: Yes, I'm also wondering what's going on with Tufts. It seems that Tufts hasn't gotten talked about too much on this site, so maybe the bulk of their interviews have yet to come. Did you take the April or August MCAT?

Has any August MCATer been invited to interview at Tufts?

According to the "Acceptances, Waitlisted or Rejected" thread, there has been 1 acceptance and 1 waitlist for SDNers. According to the "August MCATers with interviews thread," no August MCATer from SDN has gotten an interview invite. So no need to panic, guys. I'm in the same boat. I've heard that they're one of the slower schools (guess we already knew that!).
 
I took the MCAT in april and according to them my file was complete 11/4...I'm not freaking out or anything but I just want to hear from them. Let's hope they get on the ball soon
 
I haven't heard anything from them either. It seems that they are seriously behind. Doesn't matter to me though, I will be withdrawing soon.
 
FYI:
They correspond with applicants via snail mail, which will explain some of the delay. Also, the last interview date is April 30 and they interview about 40 applicants at a time (at least that's how it was back in nov...this number may change as the interview season progresses). In general, Tufts is a slow school. It takes them forever to respond to emails, so don't take personal offense or worry too much if you don't hear from them.

According to the said thread, it looks like places like Loyola and Northwestern hasn't gotten their balls rolling for the August MCATers, either.

Tufts is slow all around. I decided not to hold my place in the class and sent them the form immediately--like over a month ago--but they are still sending me health forms and so on. I think they are just extremely backed up due to the sheer number of people who apply and the fact that they are an entirely non-web-based admissions office. Furthermore, they won't answer questions over the telephone and they only interview on Tuesdays (they started really late--in November--and took a month off for the Holidays, so I think they have only had about 8 interview sessions of 40 people each, so they are only aout halfway through the number of people they will be interviewing)...

Do not give up hope. Really. The fact that they are slow is in no way a reflection on you or your candidacy. I know it is hard to be patient and their lack of communication is frustrating, but there is still time.

Hey, guys, I got an interview invitation to Tufts today! And yes, I was an August MCATer. So, I guess things are moving! Finally, an interview I don't have to travel far to - only a 15 minute T ride. Best of luck, everyone!
 
I just realized how shallow that last statement was. I should be grateful for the interview - no matter how far I have to travel. I know what it's like to get NO interviews (after all, this is my third time applying, but that's another story). So, I take my shallowness back.

We should all be so lucky!! My closest interviews (SLU regional, and UWSOM-WWAMI) are in Seattle, approximately 2,000 miles away from Anchorage. 🙁 <img src="graemlins/pity.gif" border="0" alt="[Pity]" />

And yes, I'm glad I'm having to travel to the east coast 3 times (and hopefully more), but it does get tiring, not to mention expensive, so I don't think it's shallow at all to be grateful for an interview close to home! 🙂

Tufts recieved my secondary around mid october and just today (Jan 23, 02) I got an interview notice so you guys should hand in there. Tufts is definitely going slow.
 
Got the snail-mail invite today!!! 😀 From the sheet they sent about possible interview dates (I'm to call and schedule, and it was too late to call by the time my mail was delivered), it looks like they're interviewing through April 30 (Tuesdays only, but NOT on 2/26 OR 3/26).
 
Hi SMW, congratulations on the invite! But I've got to admit I'm totally jealous. Do you mind telling me when your application was complete according to the postcard they sent you? Mine is dated Nov. 28th and haven't heard a word.

I am going crazy with Tufts, because that's one of my top choices and I graduated from there (I know they give alums priorities) but I can't seem to get their attention. I was telling myself that they must be behind this year and that I'll calm down and be patient. But now that I hear that August MCATers are starting to get invites from them, as well, it's hard to sit still. They gave me the shaft last year and it may end up that way this year again. Am I on their black list or what?! Okay, I'm done venting. I'm sorry... I should be congratulating you instead of whining!

Btw, I think you'll love Tufts, especially if you love Chinese food (right near many cheap authentic Chinese restaurants). Although many people say that the surrounding area's dirty and shady, it is much better compared to Boston's other two medical schools. Plus, it's right on the subway stop. 🙄

11/27 ( Check out the "Those who submitted late" thread for this type of information). I live right next to the airport here in Anchorage, so if you're in a suburb or something, you could be waiting longer for something mailed out the same day.

I would love to go to school in Boston, and Tufts sounds much more like my cup of tea than Boston U., the only other Boston school I applied to.

I would love to go to school in Boston too, but Tufts is not showing me any love. My application was complete on Nov. 30, but it's good news that they are interviewing through April. What was the earliest date they offered you? Just wondered how their interviews are filling up. Thanks!!!

They just sent me the schedule of all interview dates, including those from Oct. 30 - Jan. 22, with no indication as to which of the future dates are full or filling up. So I won't know until I can call them tomorrow to schedule.

does anyone know how often tufts interview letters go out?? it seems as if a few people here got a letter this past week..which sounds like more waiting for me! fun fun!
 
Got my invite to interview via snail mail today--don't lose hope! I sent my secondary in early September, and got the "application complete" postcard dated 12/12.

I'm probably going to have to interview in April, and the admiss guy (sounded nice!) said that decisions are done monthly in lumps, which means they probably won't meet on the April interviews until the first week in May. Does anyone know if interviewing in April is necessarily a bad thing, ie. more likely to get waitlisted than accepted? March 19 was open, but I'd have to spend a huge amount of money and take **** at work to make that happen... Any advice, fellow SDNer's?
 
I got the Tufts invite today!!! YEEEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!! This is one of my top choices, because I did my undergrad there and so there is a bond there.

The earliest date they offered me was March 19th, followed by the first week of April. I do think that they have a lot of interviewing left to do. The reason I say this is because, on the August MCATer with Interview thread, Tufts didn't pop up until much later than most other schools. Good luck to everyone!!! :clap: :clap: :clap:

Well, let me be the first Canadian to congratulate you guys for receiving the Tufts invite! Btw, anyone see that controversy in figure skating last night!! ARGH!!

As for figure skating, it just really sucks that you train like crazy for years and years for that Olympic moment, only to be have the judges break your heart.

SMW--congrats, I remember how bad you wanted to interview in Boston! Good luck! And it may not be for a place on the waitlist. I had the same concern (my interview is in April) so I called the admissions office today and the guy there said that acceptances are decided on a monthly basis (ie. all March interviewees reviewed at the end of March) and acceptances are evenly distributed over all the interviewing months. He said they purposely reserves spots for the April (and March!) interviewees since they figure they'll get some great people even though it's late.

Congrats to all of you interviewing at Tufts; I am a first year who is very busy in the throws of anatomy and for the most part like it here (except for the ridiculous tuition, which is not unique to Tufts and will be described to you at your interview session). East Ocean City Restaurant has good Chinese food, Chinatown Cafe down the street from the school is all right (huge portion sizes if you want to take some home), and the Vietnamese places in Chinatown are generally v. good (Pho Vietnam, Pho Pasteur, Montein, and others). I got in off the waitlist as did many of my classmates. If you have any other questions please post here and I'll answer them when I get some more time. good luck!
 
Thanks for the post Katie, I'll have to try some of those places. Also I don't think the tuition is that ridiculous; maybe compared to a state school, but most private schools and state schools for out of staters are around 40k. I applied to UCol which is 60k for out of staters, but then you can switch your residency after a year.

SMW--I'm in Albuquerque (the big city!) but Belen is nice. Guess you don't make it down there that often from Anchorage!

Yes, the tuition at Tufts is very high, even higher than most private schools. But Boston is a great place to spend 4 years! I didn't know that Colorado charges $60K. That's a lot...

Hey, has anyone read this site? It was by a third year Tufts student. It's outrageously negative, so much so I have a really hard time believing his experience is typical.

yes, I've read that from beginning to end. I found it shortly after discovering SDN, when someone posted about it. Stayed up way too late. Most disturbing. It certainly does focus on the negative, but I also have a hard time believing he made it all up. Definitely food for thought. Everyone should read it.
 
Does financial status have an impact in Tufts admissions? One of the downers I thought when I had my (initial) interview was that she looked at my parents occupations, commented on the limits of Stafford loans and then told me to consider state schools strongly.

Otherwise, watch your spending! After the interview, I bought 3 addictive black bean moon cakes, a pair of finely crafted arnis sticks and some CDs. Chinatown has a lot of cool stuff.

Who else is applying to BU? I'd much rather be at Tufts from what I hear, but I haven't heard anything from BU about an interview in spite of numerous phone calls. I'm thinking that's probably not going to happen...
 
I read the article. So much discontent! But an eye-opener, all the same. Can't believe it's written by a Tufts graduate... the students there seemed very happy and pleased. They even teased us interviewees and being there felt like we were already accepted.

Anyone heard about this new curriculum where they're trying to merge DVM and MD?
 
I have not heard a thing about merging the DVM and MD curriculums. They might be trying to move the vet students in Grafton here to Boston for some courses, but I don't really know. Financial aid is not considered in the admissions decision at Tufts. I hadn't submitted my FA paperwork when I was accepted in July, and everything worked out OK with FA and getting loans.

I'm in the process of reading that diary. I can't believe how horrible the experience was for him..I wonder if it's like this for everyone. I think he isolate dhimself and should have gotten his feelings out to others instead of only writing them down. I also wonder if Tufts is like this, or if they have responded to it in any way...and what do other tuft-goers have to say about it? Katie, this means you......digamos por favor
 
My med school friend did once tell me that Tufts' primary teaching hospital, NEMC, is known for having lots of tough doctors who aren't known to give utmost respect to the med students and the residents. I don't really know how much of this is true. In any case, you can do clerkships at other affiliated sites like Baystate in Springfield, so I don't think it's a problem.
 
There were a couple things that struck me when I was reading that online diary thing. Originally it was a book, made to sell, right? So diary entries like, "Day went pretty good today--joked around with kids on my peds rotation" won't wind up fitting into the doom and gloom ethos. The other thing is I am a firm believer your attitude in any given situation is the only thing that can affect your happiness. The surgery intern is an dingus--so what? Does that mean you have to be an dingus? Or give up on medicine? For every one person like this guy there were probably 50 others that had positive, fulfilling experiences that never thought to put down their thoughts online.

Tufts is still great in my book. Life is what we make of it.

Obviously, you have to read this with a grain of salt. This is one doctor's perception which happened to take place at Tufts. I firmly believe that you cannot make any judgments about Tufts or about medical training, based on this one person's account, which is as depressing as any I've seen. I know that Tufts med school's administration is very student-oriented. The doctor that I shadow actually graduated from Tufts and says he got great training there. He is also genuinely compassionate, open-minded and thinks patients first. I know that, at his practice, patients come first (unlike Dr. Greger's assertion that patients came last at his clerkship site).

Nonetheless, it's very unsettling to read this stuff. One of the primary reasons I'm entering medicine is because I believe that I can do a good job of becoming a compassionate, humble caregiver amidst many doctors who are not. If Dr. Greger is correct in saying that medical training establishment generally seeks to suppress your enthusiastic, patient-first attitude, then I know I'll be a major misfit in the medical school.

Can a 4th-year student or a resident out there please please post your opinions and share your experiences regarding this? I want to see confirmations that Dr. Greger's accounts are an exception, not the rule.
