Meanwhile, Chase just closed its private loan program. As in since yesterday. D'oh.

I just applied for a Chase private loan today...but it's the one that has to be certified by the school. I hope it doesn't get tangled up because of the required school certification. So far, Chase is the only lender that given me approval without a cosigner. If this one falls through...I'm in trouble.

Midlife - have you tried CitiAssist? I used that to travel abroad one summer, for 'educational purposes.' It will be easier if you can find someone to co-sign.

Perrot - hahahaha, great analogy.

fleurde - Congrats! Now I will be obsessively checking my mailbox this week.

PM'ed. I'm facing the same situation. One bet I'd have to make with the ACP is that I don't have to stay for neuroscience, and can come back to Seattle to make some money before med school starts (assuming the obvious). OOS COA for Tulane SOM is $70k/yr...

Just got an email saying I'm on the alternate list. I called and Shannon said they don't rank the list but that they have a top 5 and that I am in it. If anyone knows how much the list moves I would love to hear about it. Congrats to those accepted.

I am an alternate as well. You're brave to call considering the letter says not to.

I've heard the list will move a decent bit once people who were accepted to ACP get off their respective med school wait list.

Yeah...Tulane is mad expensive but it would be worth it. I'm going to continue working part-time in my lab here so I can keep my health insurance and pay my undergrad loans. It's going to be one hell of a year 🙄

Speaking of health insurance, I've got queries out on this to other people, but do you know if ACP students are eligible for Tulane's student policy?

Anyway, now I have another dive, so best of luck, and I recommend waiting a few days and then inquiring POLITELY what your status is if you haven't gotten an update.

Excellent post and great introduction to Tulane. I've been waitlisted, but still hopeful that some of you lucky ducks get into medical school this cycle. 🙂

Also wanted to say congrats to everyone that got it.

Where is everyone sending their $250 deposit? 1430 Tulane Ave SL-49?

Congrats to those accepted! I look forward to meeting you all in August.

Well...I just dropped mine off in the SCB office...but if you mail it 1430 Tulane Ave SL-49 it will go straight to the SCB office 🙂

Join the facebook group....I'm getting lonely!

Im in as well. Does anyone know what the schedule looks like? Will we be taking anatomy and histo together or separately? Im assuming that since the program goes from august to march that its separate but only taking one class at a time seems too easy?

I've been trying to figure this out for about 3 hours. It looks like anatomy is done by Thanksgiving, followed immediately by histo, and then we're on our own until neuro starts in late spring, if we want to stay for that. But according to a current M1, histo is now going to be in spring. Regardless, I don't understand what happens after December.

Here's the med student curriculum, which is new as of fall '08: http://tulane.edu/som/admissions/images/SOMCURRICULUM081809_1.jpg. See what I mean? I've already bothered Shannon today - somebody else want to bug her about this?

In a block curriculum like this, one class at a time is a plenty heavy load.

As soon as they get your deposit, they'll mail you the class schedule.'

Even with 1 class at a time, we will be booking it. I got to sit in on the some of the neuroscience lectures this year...it was intense.

Assuming Fall 2009 follows a similar schedule, we'll be facing a burden but certainly a doable one, given that the T1s will be taking other courses in the same block. I was a Drexel IMS student this last year and Drexel Med operates on a similar type of schedule: courses are "integrated" into blocks with classes starting and stopping at overlapping times. For the Drexel medical students, this meant they had to juggle anatomy, histology and biochem from the get-go, with physio joining the party later. The aim was for an "integrated" curriculum that ties topics together but there are only so many ways you can truly merge biochemistry with gross anatomy.

If my experience at Drexel is any indicator, the ACP students will be a lot less busy if they aren't taking biochemistry. It's sure to be a busy semester, but if the med students are taking gross and biochem, we'll be able to swing gross alone.

Okay, last post for the night..

For opinionated folks and/or former ACPers:

If I really want to end up at Tulane, should I bother checking off any other schools on AMCAS? I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket, but realistically my state school won't accept me (Boo California) and I'd prefer to go to Tulane over any other private school that might consider accepting me.

Thoughts?

I'm applying to Tulane and the two LSU schools. I don't see any harm in applying to 1 or 2 other schools...just as a back up in case something happens with Tulane.

I think it would be silly not to apply to a handful of other schools. You never know what could happen. Although there is a 95+% chance that you will attend Tulane, it is not guaranteed and therefore it is in your best interest to have some other schools on your list. (esp UCI and UCD) You might even like some of the other private schools. You are saying you would prefer Tulane without having detailed knowledge of numerous other private schools.

The answer to this was no. ACP students aren't recognized as officially enrolled at Tulane, at least for the purposes of health insurance or financial aid. But they do get to go to the Tulane gym, apparently.

I was able to get approved for a citiassist loan, with an interest rate of 15%. Yikes.

I can't make all this work out, so somebody's getting my seat. (I've also got an EVMS acceptance, which is all worked out already.) Good luck, alternates!

Just FYI, I emailed Shannon and she gave me some wait list acceptance stats. They accepted 16 students and have 35 on the wait list. Last year she said they called about 10 students off the wait list. They haven't ranked the wait list yet and wont do it until they need to start pulling people from it. Last thing she said was they wont be accepting any more updates for our files because the committee won't review them again.

Good luck to everybody with your med school and acp waitlists.

DrMidlife, you are is such a good position to have the opportunity to choose between two awesome programs. That must be a good feeling 🙂 Good luck at EVMS and good luck to all alternates.

Midlife - have you considered working part time for health insurance? I know the CitiAssist Loan is insane, (mine is currently down to 10k.. thanks G-d!) but there are options such as buying out the debt with a credit card.

That makes it sound like no one was rejected.

Without EVMS in hand, I'd be doing a bunch more work to get Tulane to happen for me. With EVMS in hand, that work doesn't seem reasonable. Tulane rocks, but not THAT hard.

Has anyone been successful in procuring funding for this program? I'm having a heck of a time trying to get a loan 😡

I'm waiting to receive information from Tulane, which I hope happens next week.

Are you trying to find a loan that doesn't require a co-signer, or anything at all?

I got my info packet from Shannon yesterday...two of the lenders they suggested don't exist and the other one doesn't have Tulane on its approved list.

I'm trying to go without a co-signer...both of my parents were denied as co-signers and my extended family won't do it. I'm also trying to figure out how to work around the school certification thing since we're not official Tulane students. I'm going to talk to Shannon today and if I can't work something out with that, I'm going to see if I can get a loan from my bank.

any alternates know if they gave Dr. Midlife's seat away yet? I assume there will be a ranking of the list once they do, it would be nice to have a number to obsess over

You can obsess over LIBOR, meanwhile. :scared:

I got a loan!! Finally caved and got a co-signer.

2% origination fee...no word on the interest yet...I'm sure it's going to hurt.

Oh well...at least the textbooks aren't as expensive as I thought they would be! For those who don't want to wait for the acceptance packet, I'm going to post the book list for anatomy and histology on the facebook group.

Mine hasn't cleared either...they're probably just waiting until the 22nd so they can deposit all the checks together.

ya i just called ms. dawsey (she seems super nice). she told me she received it and sent out my packet today. so i'm also assuming she will cash them all on the 22nd.

She is pretty fantastic...and brings in the best king cake during carnival season 😀

I guess that means they will go to the alternate list after the 22nd.

For those waiting for their info packets: I received mine today and I'm in PA. Swimchick pretty much posted all the relevant info (orientation dates, books, etc.) on the Facebook group.

Looking forward to meeting you all in a few short weeks. In the meantime, good luck with those waitlists!

To the alternates: I contacted Shannon and she said they ranked the first 5 alternates and they have taken two of those. I heard that they took 10 from the list last year, anybody know about previous years?

I just read last year's posts and 2 were accepted into acp after initially being rejected.

Yeah, I read that as well. I think last year the acceptances were sent out a month earlier than this year. As med school waitlists tend to move most in may-june I am guessing that contributed to more alternates being accepted than is typical. Guess I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed a little longer
