Tulane Class of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey Tulaners,

I had an interview on 1/12, loved it there, and am ANXIOUSLY awaiting them!!
Does anyone know:

1) at this point, is the class nearly full so do us late interviewees have less of a chance?
2) do we hear by snail mail or e-mail?
3) should I call because its been over two weeks?

Thanks!

Ohhh, that's who you are. Hi dear. 🙂

Ignore whatever Kai98375934 says...he's jealous because my undying hero worship is aimed at the great Julius Levy, the pimpingest surgeon to ever pace the 3rd floor halls.

And we're just showing the 2011 people how much fun Tulane is. I mean, if it sucked would I be posting on here an hour before our neuro test? Speaking of which, what am I doing? Bye.

Oh trust me guys, Tulane doesn't suck, but thank god rebectar does (if ya know what I mean). And there is really no reason to even discuss 2010 vs. 2011, 2011 is just an idea at this point, they haven't even been Weised yet.

Rebectar, just curious were you one of the students MD/MPH who spoke to students before the interviewing started? If you are, im pretty sure I know who you are

Actually just curious if anyone in this thread remembers, but i was the chinese guy who was there interviewing with crutches and a leg brace? I had a knee reconstruction done a few weeks before it.

I've been Wiesed....and now I keep on having these problems with rectal bleeding.

I called after three weeks and the lady at the office told me my status.

Stop giving me a bad reputation!

Braluk, I spoke to the interviewing students on Jan 16, but that was the only day so far. I am MD/MPH though, so maybe it was me.

And for the record, Kai is a dirty rotten liar. He's just mad because I won't venture into Deming to see his "Wii."

NO, KAI23098243509, I don't know what you mean. (you know, I gotta stand side-by-side to my "sponsor"). All I know is that your Wii is overhyped. I played it last time but it was nothing compared to mine.

btw, jeter told me he's disappointed that you arrived on time for neuro today. he wanted a repeat from your 3-hr late to histo final last semester.

Chinese? Awesome and welcome!! We need more yellow people here.

Phil Man Chou

ps. hope your injury recovery is going smoothly

Are you kidding me Man Chou-der? If we get any more asians here it's going to turn into an engineering school! The lectures already have subtitles, and they already built a big wall around the med school to keep out mongolians.

Rebectar has had more Wii's pointed at her than Pamela Anderson.

Im offended, im taking my acceptance elsewhere.

Kai you'll know if its yellow enough if theres a bubble tea shop around there. Is there?

Wow Kai, and you wonder why they haven't let you do any interviews. 🙂

And yes, I know of at least one bubbble tea place. I've never seen Man Chou there though...I think he's faking the whole asian thing.

There is actually a bubble tea shop, but it is run by an indian guy. My taiwanese buddy Phil-Man-CHouder claims that it is not authentic, but it still tastes pretty good.

I think rebectar is faking the whole girl thing.

this thread is great! so i've been accepted to tufts and tulane, i like how tulane is more laid back and fun. but tufts has better clinical exposure..i'm torn.

consider the weather during those winter months...that sold me.

Hi guys,

Just being lazy and found this thread.

I'm a Tulane 4th yr about to graduate and for those of you coming here next year, congrats and welcome!! For those of you still undecided I understand it's a big decision coming down to the Big Easy with all the shootings and wait aren't they still flooded and your parents are probably freaking and all that stuff. Listen, the city gets a bad rap in term of crime, while it is high, it's always been, just like....every other city in America. Avoid dealing drugs, joining a gang, and prostituting...and you should be OK. I've never felt unsafe here and hell I've lived in the Bronx and I felt that was much sketchier.

Students really are as awesome as they seem. Yes, some of our hospitals are closed but we are compensating with other affiliations, and let's be real, when you're a clueless med student you don't need crazy volume to learn what an MI or appendicitis looks like...so you're going to still see the cases you need. And the key point is that while Charity is closed, its patients are still here. We still see the crazy stuff. Attendings are satill dedicated to teaching.

Coming here was my best decision. I have LOVED med school and New Orleans and I will be so sad to leave in a few months!! Contrary to my friends at other schools, I found the 4 years completely doable and fun and very chill, and on residency interviews people have LOVED the Tulane name. I totally would have come here even if I knew the storm was going to happen and I think a lot of us feel that way.

Oh - to reply to that random poster cutting down the school:
1. The gen surgery dept did withdraw its residency program just this week with plans to have an all new accredited one up by July 07 - residents won't be affected, neither will you. Sounds like it was mainly documentation problems. Please don't let this stress you!
2. The NICU as far as I know is back where it was pre-storm and functioning. We had one at another hospital that we closed and moved it back to its main location.
3. Our students are always great!

Sorry this is so long, I guess I am enthusiastic 😉 Please don't hesitate to PM me (or however the heck these things work) with questions and good luck!!!

Oh and to the poster who says she's from the Northeast and not sure if she can handle the switch......trust me you can especially handle it when a cold day is 55 degrees in January down here!!

Seriously though, it was culture shock at first for me but then it made me realize there's life outside the Northeast way of thinking. I think it was a great move to go to med school outside of my comfort zone. Yes the humidity is bad, but it soooo makes up for it in the winter and when you are driving a few short hours after an exam to a beach in September! And the people here are wonderful and unique....it's so worth a little sweat in July.

OK I Swear last post.

So my fiance was also choosing between these two as well. He came to Tulane and met me and now we're getting married. So clearly you should come to Tulane. Your love life will thank you.

And we have awesome clinical exposure. At places like University Hospital which IS open (it is Charity's little sister) you will BE the doc for these patients. So come here. Or else. 🙂

I'm not sure how much more clinical exposure a young'in needs - I am a first year and I have a preceptor, have shadowed in the ER, worked in two clinics and our Surgery and EM clubs are awesome - I signed up for an IV & Intubation clinic this month where we have the opportunity to put in IVs and intubate patients before surgery. Not to mention the standardized patient program where we are taught clinical skills in class and then practice with practice patients. There's as much opportunity as you have time for.

Can't help it, I do love Tulane.

but, Jay's cafe is not even run by Asians. I promise I will take you guys to have some authentic bubble tea some day somewhere.

Yeah I totally agree. We have so many community service opportunities and you get to have early patient interactions here. There are countless number of clinics and health fairs that always need students to participate and learn one-on-one with patients. I couldn't be happier about where I am now.

And YES. THE Emeregency Medicine CLUB (TEMIG) IS AWESOME!

LOL, can i really resist the charm? But seriously, it really seems like there's a passion for the school here.

Best reason I've heard yet!

does anyone have access to a recent tulane match list? see i'm shooting for some kinda surgery and i know tufts has a few spots for surgery and ortho..also, their location in boston makes it easier to coordinate research and away rotations...comments? also, does tulane have an audio or video lecture recording system in place?

Got my email from Dr. B yesterday! I'm joining the club!!!

So far this year, Tulane has matched 7 in urology, 3 in optho, and 2 in neurosurgery. i believe tulane had between 4 and 6 go ortho last year. The list is around somewhere, probably on the SOM website.

also, does tulane have an audio or video lecture recording system in place?

Right now it depends on if the lecturer allows audio recording or not and it varies. Right now neuroscience & physio do, biochem doesn't. Last semester, I don't remember. No video. There is a notetaking service for all classes which makes it easier to sleep in 🙂

Hehe also most of you guys can hit me up for biochem and physio audio recordings/test material/practice questions/exams/powerpoint. I am taking those right now at university of cincinnati so i can supplement some stuff. Ill be selling it out of my coat while dealing out narcotics too 😉

Microgal I pmed you a while back but are ya definite on tulane? We should all totally hit up a bar when we arrive there 🙂

Hey Braluk,
I'm pretty evenly split between Tulane and Emory. I have an interview in a week at USC, but I don't think I want to go there. Haven't gotten into Emory yet either (probably won't hear anything from then till March). As a school I liked Tulane better....my only concerns are feeling safe walking around and whatnot (I plan to live alone probably in an apt) and the fact that they lost so many faculty members. I was a little disheartened to learn they just lost their surgery program.... I'd like to know why that happened.

I believe that someone posted before that the surgery program is getting re-accredited. Maybe I'm wrong. Can someone back me up here?

There was some sort of problem with forms and paperwork, not the surgery program itself (right?)

hey if you do find an apartment, maybe we can live in the same complex and carpool. If i dont stay in Deming, then im looking for housemates/roommates/apartment mates -makes living easier/more fun and probably cheaper one way or another. 🙂 Good luck with the other schools but hopefully you'll come here to Tulane 🙂

TOTAL redemption for Tulane!

How does the service work? Who takes the notes? Are they of good quality? How soon are they available? How are they made available?

Im guessing whoever wants to can volunteer themselves to take notes, and then they sell it to students and make money

There is a note-taking service set up. We have ten or so notetakers who are paid for taking notes. They spend about 3 hours outside of each lecture sprucing up the notes and making sure they're thorough. The notes are fantastic and are currently saving my ass for next week's tests. You definitely get your money's worth in my opinion.

Also wanted to put this out there - since I wish I'd had someone to do something like this: if you're looking for housing on Craigslist (which is where I found my current and future housing here) or wherever and want someone to drive by and check out the area, send me a message. I don't mind at all and as you probably heard, the neighborhoods vary a lot from block to block.

Kai has had even more Wii's pointed at him than I have.

Hey guys,

I've been quietly reading this thread for a while now (got the invite in Dec by snail mail) and wanted to finally say HI to everyone. Tulane really got me excited for next year, and I can't wait to meet you guys.

I just wanted to chime in about the notetaking service since this was brought up by our student guide. Apparently lectures (I believe all) will be recorded next year in 1555 Poydras. Apparently the new classrooms are going to be sweet. Speaking of which, any updates on the building?

keep it up, guys. i'll be over here, quietly being convinced that tulane is where i want to be next year. barring some major upset with surprise interview invites in march or something crazy like that, i'm basically sold.

i'm thinking studio/1br for next year myself, assuming i find a comfortable, happy neighborhood.

No one knows for sure. The administration has hinted that was the nature of the problem, but I sense that there's a lot we've not been told. Which, quite frankly, bothers me more than any actual problem would.

Anyway, the reorganization is a good thing.

Braluk,
In all honesty, I'll probably end up at Tulane this fall.... and it would be awesome to live in the same apt complex (I'de definitely fell safer knowing I had a friend close). I only plan to live alone because as u can tell from my avatar, I have a dog, and while he may be 8lbs, when I leave he barks up a storm and my current roomate doesn't like it so much. Anyways, I'm getting more and more excited!
