Tulane Class of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey i think we should all try to live togehter in this complex. That way we can all hang out, carpool in together, study together, etc..etc.. Heck if anyone is up for it, Ill share a 2BR place with them and split the rent. I just emailed the guys there and got a response from them: I live in a similarly gated community now and rent is about 1200 a month- and I can definitely attest that its definitely worth it- life is good 😀

Heres the email:

"27 beautifully landscaped acres...3 swimming pools"

That sounds like paradise...but I think it would be a little too far for me.

I'm definitely considering the uptown area the most. I figure it's close to everything in NO, and it's badass. As pointed out earlier, nearby you got all the bars, restaurants, coffee shops and various other places I can waste my time at not studying. Oh, and the gym we get to use as part of our tuition is at the undergrad campus (I think). And, hopefully the train/trolley or whatever it is starts working again..(is it still not working?). I mean c'mon, who wouldn't love takin thomas the tank engine to class?

They may say 15 minutes to downtown, but that is probably only true at 4AM. The traffic across the crescent city connection (i.e. the river) is obscene nearly all day. Plus it costs $1 each time you come from the west bank into the city.

Uptown is much better.

i'm all about living uptown/garden district, but safety remains a huge concern for me too. my parents and boyfriend aren't too excited about ME moving to nola either unless i can convince them i'm persuing it as safely as possible. then again, they weren't that excited when i was living in brooklyn last year either and i never had any problems there. it's just important to be smart and realistic about it all, and if a safe, gated community adds a few minutes onto my commute, i'll get over it. i guess algiers is sort of a second resort for me. i'm not willing to take anything until i get there anyway.

but back to immediate concerns, april 13-15. french quarter festival. time to scope out the city. anyone else in?

It's like another country.

Uptown is where you probably want to be. Look at zip codes 70115 & 70118. The Warehouse District and the French Quarter are very cool but expensive and the Marigny is also very cool, but if you aren't within a few blocks of Esplanade safety could be an issue. Metairie is one giant parking lot and Kenner is like living in Newark.

Happy Mardi Gras!!

😎

The only decent/convenient place to live in the Westbank is Algiers Point. You can take the ferry to class and the neighborhood has a very artsy/chummy New Orleans feel, quite unlike the rest of the "Blessed" Bank.

Plus you can always hit up Mardi Gras World whenever there are big parties there... ask around.

Most young first years at Tulane do not live in the Westbank. If you guys are looking to go out and party most weekends, Westbank is not a good option. Crossing the CCC bridge is a problem as mentioned. There is nothing in the Westbank in terms of party scene. It's not worth going out to uptown/downtown, partying all night, and then having to drive back (designated driver of course) to the Westbank.

Uptown--party all night, cheap cab back to your place.

You wouldn't be able to afford cabbing it from the Westbank.

All the night life is uptown/downtown. There are several affordable apts to find in these areas in safe neighborhoods.

If you're looking to be quite social in the crescent city, avoid Metairie and Westbank, b/c you'll just be constantly driving to uptown/downtown. It's only like a 20 min drive, but if you're going to be driniking all night you're not going to be able to cab it anywhere.

I have a question, friends. I interviewed at Tulane on the 29th. It will have been 2 weeks on this coming monday. Is it a good idea for me to call them then to inquire about my status? It's hard for me to wait, since I really want to go there!

Thanks!😀

You can definitely call or Email Dr. beckman for a direct response- they are very friendly and open to students calling them to ask about status. I believe you should call on a Tuesday/Thurs- the days that the committee meets.

I'm from old Algiers. I haven't been back over to where that apartment mentioned is recently but to tell you the absolute truth I'd be quite surprised to see an apartment complex back there as nice as whats in those pictures.

You never know though, but this is certainly an instance where a visit beforehand is an absolute necessity. As far as how long it would take you to get over to the med school, 15 minutes if you hit all green lights and theres no traffic, but with traffic it can take up to an hour or more. Katrina has made traffic in this city far worse than before. New Algiers is an OK option for those with families coming along, its a nice, family oriented, and relatively safe area, but for others I'd limit the search on the west bank to the point. As mentioned, the point has that new orleans feel, and the ferry is right there, so you can walk/ride your bike to class (I'd feel safe doing so even at night)

Oh, and if any of you fellow accepted want to hang out when you head down here to visit send me a PM and let me know. Id be more than willing to show you around and have a few drinks together (or maybe more than a few... maybe a whole lot more than a few if you're up for it).

Hi,

Do most of you think it's necessary to have a car while at Tulane? Has anyone had experience buying a car in the new orleans area? If I do buy a car, I'll have to decide if I should get it in the northeast and drive to NO or get it down there...

Thanks for any advice!

Absolutely . Especially 3rd/4th year to get to the hospitals, but even before then as the public transportation here is weak.

I drove mine down from NY in 2 days (with someone to share the driving) and it was fine...

I just thought of this....but I may have an apt. to offer you all. Our lease goes through june and we'd like to get out of it early so it'd be for June 1. It's a 2BR/1BA located right off St. Charles uptown with zero storm damage, it's really a beautiful place. If anyone thinks they'd be interested keep it in mind...we'll post here if it's a possiblity. Or PM me if you're in town and want to look. Landlord loves med students so we'd like to keep the apt in the 'family.'

Rent is $1500 (don't know if that will change) and the drive to downtown can be 10 mins (no traffic) - 20 minutes (like with 8am traffic some days). It's a great location uptown, super safe (the area is patrolled by private neighborhood security).

I'm right by Carrollton...some streets (Zimpel, past Adams - my new house was narrowly missed!) are pretty messed up, lots of trees down, and I heard of some houses that had walls ripped off...but I think for the most part it was just a few contained areas that were hit. Our power just came on about 30 minutes ago. Reassure your parents that everything's fine and it's still safe to come to Tulane. 🙂 The school wasn't near the tornadoes or anything.

I wasn't actually aware that New Orleans got tornadoes...but they definitely scare the hell out of you passing by your street at 4am...

I always thought it was a midwestern thing. When i was at the mayo last summer working there, we got tornado warnings out the wazoo. kinda scary to be near one i can imagine- i heard it sounds like a train, or an angry attending

I saw rebectar actually in the tornado riding a broom stick like in the wizard of oz.

Man i just got reamed (at least i think) by med physio. I hope i maintain a passing grade in this class so tulane still thinks im desirable

<-----Finished studying for Step 2

Hmmm, that must have been as I was flying over MUNCHKINland...

Very belated and lame response...yay Mardi Gras

By the way, here's some of the Tiiiiiiiger-baiting fun you guys are in for next year:

Mardis Gras must've been freezing down in NOLA. Its around -10 here with windchill so i cannot wait to get the fkcu outta here 🙂

New sign up on 1555 Poydras and other updates concerning the new building:

http://www.som.tulane.edu/

I didn't know they were going to put the auditorium on the 1st floor. There doesn't seem like enough room for it from what I recall but then again I didn't spend a lot of time on the first floor outside of waiting on the elevator.

Oh man thats friggin awesome, im excited

so exactly which M1 classes will be in that bldg? How much of that building did they lease out?

The way it works is there's a first year auditorium and a 2nd year auditorium, and all your classes are in that classroom for the whole year.

I hope the ventilation system is better in the new classrooms. Both classrooms in the old building had seats that were perpetually freezing, meanwhile a couple of seats away the weather was merely chilly. It's tolerable when the whole class is there, but when people stop going to class, it becomes miserably cold in there.

Shame on you Braluk for using M1 instead of T1 😉

The first class to use the new auditorium will be the year after us from what I was told on my interview. Outside shot of us moving in there in the spring of our first year.

I'm not sure how much of the building they leased out but apparently enough to get their name on it.

i have a feeling that name was graphically superimposed on the picture. i don't remember it when i was there the other day. Then again, I have taken a lot of beads to the head and face region in the past few days. Memories could have been altered. happy mardi gras y'all!

Hey im too lazy to look but for people filing FAFSA, how much did file for per year? How do you guys factor in cost of living to borrow more than just tuition, did you go through a private lender or through some governemtn loan?

The University will be leasing 150,000 square feet through 2017 at 1555 Poydras. The auditorium will include 192 seats. In addition, they are rennovating floors 6-13 just for Tulane College of Medicine.

how odd. i was about to say that that picture is photoshopped...but it appears to be hosted by the som webpage. now i'm going to have to drive downtown tomorrow just to see if Tulane actually has the name on the building.

The picture probably is photoshopped. I saw one very similar (if not the exact same) 2 years ago just after they got the building. They were showing it to students to give us an idea of how the building would look, and they told us the sign wasn't actually on the building yet. I haven't been downtown in months, so I don't know if the sign is up now or not.

I hate rebectar....................but i respect her.

Has anyone sent their $500 deposit in yet? I am close to making Tulane my final decision. If so, did you send it by itself or attached to a letter of some sort? And also, did they send you a confirmation of receipt? Thanks.

I sent a letter, but not my deposit. I need to do that.

I sent mine in with a letter stating that Tulane was my final choice. I included my AMCAS ID and personal information in the letter just in case. That was over two weeks ago, and they still haven't cashed the check. I know it got there though since I sent it by registered mail. I guess they must be pretty backed up.

Oh my god, are you still drunk? Go add some more product to your hair, you edema-handed Pedialyte-drinker!

Just kidding, I love you. Now stop taking up space on these kids' thread...they want to know actual important stuff about Tulane. Or that story about how you single-handedly saved Ray Nagin's life with only a bottle opener and dental floss after he was beaned by a Zulu coconut and fell off his horse yesterday. 😕

Rebectar, why do you hurt those who care the most? Incidentally, after i saved ray nagin's life he made me mayor for a whole day and i had the police install a hidden camera in your shower.

I'm from California and wouldn't mind meeting some friends before we go to NO. If someone share my sentiments, please let me know.
