Hello Fellow Classmates....

I was acepted to Tulane last month, but it has taken my awhile to get on here and post. Obviously from my screen name I am a girl and I am from Texas. Does anyone know if we are supposed to do anything besides send in a check and wait for the aceptance packet?

Also, the group consensus is live in uptown which is fine, but are most people living in houses or apartments? What about roomates?

Also, I currently live in a College town and we whine when we have too long of a walk from the parking lot...how is the parking situtation near the medical center and the commute from uptown?

Last question for right now... when is everyone moving to NO?

I hope to meet yall soon!

I know this is for students but......... does anyone know it there's any wait list movement this year? I'm on the acceptance range and I'm dying to get in!!

Ill probably be moving in early August. I have to figure out the situation with my gf moving in with me and getting a car and where ill be. Theres a good chance ill be in deming, but if I can move uptown, that would be awesome. Lets all get a little SDN group together for Tulane 🙂

Im not sure, most of us here were accepted off the bat so Im not sure if we can speak about the waitlists. Ask samoa. and check in the pre-allo forums under Tulane Acceptance Range thread on page 3-4 somewhere (search for it). Waitlists typically dont move until May 15th and later. It didnt move alot in the past because generally the people accepted to Tulane stayed there, but who knows what it might be this year given the slow progress of government involvement in NO.

During my visit, I found no problems with parking. There are several garages close to the buildings. I remember hearing some students mention it was $80/mo. but I'm not positive.

-Parking is glorious here (especially after being in Houston and seeing the clusterf*ck their students deal with). HEAL lot is $70 a month, maybe it did go up to $80, and there are lots of other lots (both covered and uncovered) around. You don't have to walk far at all, and if you park in HEAL, Saratoga, or LaSalle, it is all connected by enclosed walkways.

-About Acceptance range: As Braluk said, see the post in pre-allo, but generally the majority of movement is after May 15th when students can only hold one school spot, so tons open up. I know I got in maybe 3 days after that!

good luck!

Just curious on the avg weekend of someone at tulane, what do most of you guys do on the weekends (schedule wise)

Just curious on the avg weekend of someone at tulane, what do most of you guys do on the weekends (schedule wise)

1st and 2nd yr: Study a bit to keep up, but on non-test weekends there'd always be people doing something whether it be a party, going to movies or dinner, I like parks/museums/trying local stuff so I'd do that, going to the gym, sleeping late, shopping, cooking, going dancing, clubbing etc....there's lots to do 🙂 And after exams there'd always be end of block parties to go to which are fun b/c your class dues pays for your food and drink

3rd yr: If not on call and on a hard rotation catching up on sleep, otherwise pretty much the same. My friends and I made a point to get together one night every week for dinner since we didn't see each other on different rotations. Usually involved too much alcohol, but so it goes...

4th yr: Anything I damn well please!! When not interviewing, the week is the same as a weekend basically. I know a lot of my friends have gotten very well-aquainted with golf 🙂 It is a glorious time.

did anyone have to choose between a state school and tulane? what made you give up in-state tuition and being close to home?

I think being able to broaden your horizon and enriching your personal character in a foreign environment is an adventure and challenge that's well worth the tuition investment. It's true tuition will be a pain in the ass, but it's not so bad that I'm convinced that I won't be able to pay it back in the future. As the saying goes, home is where you make it, so I'm all for being all over the place.... Damn that's a good answer huh?

In reality, no, I was not lucky enough to make such a decision. But good question though.

On a housing tip, does anyone have good links for places they are interested in? Also, don't mean to impose but anyone interested in sharing rooming arrangements? I wouldn't mind splitting financial and whatever burdens that can be Dutched by sharing the same roof.

There may be a chance I would want to split an apartment up so long as I get my own room. It depends on if my gf can move in with me or not.

Yes I did (NY school), and in the end I chose Tulane b/c the students were amazinginly friendly and the clinical experience was awesome. I didn't want to go through 4 years at a place I knew I picked just because it was cheaper - everyone will be in debt from med school, some more than others, but we all are and will all have salaries to pay it back.

I was quite homesick at the beginning as I had no one in New Orleans, but the friends I made here (the reason I came in the first place) got me through it, and I adjusted quickly. I am so glad I came here bc it got me out of my comfort zone and into a whole new part of the country...and that diversity has added a huge amount to my medical training. One reason why I plan to do residency in a whole other part of the country 🙂

If you think your state school is best for you, awesome, go for it. But if it's only edging out other places b/c of the pricetag and you don't have extenuating circumstances (kids etc) I'd be careful about letting that be your deciding factor. Pricetag doesn't mean a whole lot if you aren't happy for a long 4 years.

Hey veg, where/wat are you doing your residency in? During the interviews did they express that they liked tulane students (ive always heard this when it comes match time)

Can you elaborate on some of the other, more pertinent reasons as to why you are making an exodus from the Big Uneasy for residency?

Ob/Gyn - and yes, every interviewer was like wow you've been through some crap, bet you saw grat stuff etc etc....I definitely know it has helped, and even pre-Katrina it did b/c we had the association with Charity. Plus they know our school has a reputation for chill people and they've definitely commented on that, b/c residencies want people who "play well with others."

And I'll let you know March 15 as to where!

Can you elaborate on some of the other, more pertinent reasons as to why you are making an exodus from the Big Uneasy for residency?

Main reason: b/c my fiance and I want to try somewhere new for 4 years - just like we both picked a completely new place for med school (and that's worked out great), we want to check out a new place for residency. Also this place doesn't have the fellowship I may want to pursue.

Minor reasons: As much as I love NO I don't love all of its politics, which if I were to do residency here it might affect me minimally, but much more so if i stayed on for practice (ie access to termination training - I am doing OB).

My conclusion: This place is still GREAT for med school. The crazy patients and their illnesses are still here, there's tons of opportunities for community involvement, and the students are awesome. I'd choose it all over again for that. But I personally (and my fiance) really want to explore what the rest of the country has to offer! Though I am going to be really sad to leave.

Thanks. On a side note, anyone concerned about the high murder rate in N.O.?

Does anyone know if the administration has decided whether to keep the P/F grading system for this year's incoming T1's? In my interview, I was told that they had yet to vote on whether they would keep it or not.

Honestly no. It's like any other big city - avoid hanging with the rough crowd (generally I recommend no drug dealing), go out in groups at night downtown, and just use common sense.

The city's getting a lot of bad press lately b/c it makes for good news. I've never felt unsafe and feel that the crime here is just what comes with being in a city...

I'm going to chime in to second this.. while violent crime rates have gone up, the important point is that they haven't really spread. There are a few new locations that people have to stay clear of, but for the most part crime is confined to the same areas that had problems previously. The unsafe areas are pretty easy to recognize. I don't feel any less safe than I did pre-katrina, and I certainly don't feel any less safe than I would in any other big city.

usually Tulane has a site with a message board for accepted students, does anyone know if that is up again this year?

I will qualify this statement. Yes, the city has always been lawless, but remember that the population is half its its original size, so the problem is actually a lot worse than ever before. Crime has definitely increased in the Carrollton area and students are regular targets of robberies. But like others have insinuated, just don't drunkenly wander around alone during the late hours and you should be fine. DWIs and hit-and-runs are rites of passage, if you even get caught at all.

One bit of useful advice: Learn to recognize all the smoke and mirrors, and drink to them accordingly.

There is a site that another SDner told me- www.somforum.com

Ive registered for an account a while ago and still am waiting for the admin to confirm me. If there is another you guys know let us know 🙂

The somforum is run by Tulane SOM students and is not affiliated with the administration. Last I heard you need a Tulane email address ([email protected]) to register, but you can try contacting Nate (the Forum admin) and see if he'll give you access.

yea i contacted him already he said he would but he hasnt had a chance to yet since he just got back from vacation. Is there an administration affiliated one that we can access?

Just curious on the avg weekend of someone at tulane, what do most of you guys do on the weekends (schedule wise)

On the weekends I would: eat/drink/play poker at Harrah's (especially lucrative when conventions are in town)/play rugby/play anything at all/ride my bike up the levee/drink/eat/eat/eat/drink/go listen to music while drinking shortly after eating/etc.

1st and 2nd year I'd study on Sundays with football on in the background, with more studying and less screwing around during Step 1 season. 3rd year during inpt rotations your style gets pretty cramped, but there's still plenty of room for various shenanigans. And 4th year is every bit the glorious bastion of laziness it's made out to be.

Exactly. Yes, random crime happens. Use common big city sense and you'll be as safe as anywhere else.

Don't deal drugs, and you probably won't be murdered. Student loans are a safe source of spending-money income. Crack distribution is not.

The Office of Admissions has a website (http://www.som.tulane.edu/admissions/), but if I remember correctly the information for the incoming class doesn't get updated until late May or June.

this sounds perfect. I plan on blowing most of my student loan money on roulette.

Can we get some input on fitness?

Where do the students work out? How are the facilities? Do most ppl work out at Tulane undergrad? Do most of the students work out or not really?

Thanks

I should slap myself for not trying to use Google first. http://www.reilycenter.com/

I am assuming this is where everyone works out?

How is the parking here? I know I am going to need the $80/month lot near the med school, am I going to have to get another permit for the undergrad campus?

Thanks.

No need for another parking pass. Pretty sure your HEAL pass would let you park in the lot by Reily, but if not, you can park on the street on Audubon a couple blocks away and just walk from there. Reily can get crowded after 4PM but it's not too bad and the facilities are nice. Indoor running track is huge during summer heat.

You actually really don't need to buy a parking pass at all for med school purposes. I have never in all my time here paid a dime to park. If you don't mind a 5 minute walk, there's plenty of free parking on the other side of Claiborne and the side streets near there.

This may change in your 3rd year when you'll be coming/going at night or in the dark, so a HEAL pass then would make sense, especially for the ladies. But you definitely don't need one in your first two years unless the convenience is worth the $$ to you. I'd rather spend the $80/month on oyster po'boys, but that's just me.

i can finally post on this thread!!!

i just found out i was accepted today!

i have much more to say, but am too excited to type! just wanted to say "hi" to everyone for now.....

Bruin,

Is the HEAL pass for the lot across from the SOM? Thanks.

Hey quick Q- Im going to obviously need to purchase a car next year- did you guys buy one in new orleans? How did you finance for one?

I dont know about financing but from what I've seen here this isnt the best place to buy a car....:scared:

Oh I just mean that from browsing the paper I havent seen the best deals (nothing like those gigantic dealerships in places like houston)...and as far as buying used cars here I'd be really worried about rust! I dont know, maybe its just me.

hah, ok, it was just that after that "DWIs and hit-and-runs are rites of passage" comment I wondered what other crazy misconceptions people on here had...

I haven't been looking at car prices lately (actually I'll most likely be buying a motorcycle this summer to use in a addition to my car), but I wouldn't think new orleans would be toooo overpriced. The west bank has some pretty big dealerships, more than in metairie etc. If you're buying a remotely new vehicle, rust is not an issue, and if you're buying a car older than that, you most likely know what to look for on your own.
