Tulane Class of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey braluk -

to answer your question from another thread...Tulane is my first choice right now because it's my ONLY choice. I am waiting to hear from three other schools, though (i was a late applicant/interviewer and had 4 interviews in the month of february....)

so, i guess what i'm trying to say is that if i only get into tulane, i'll be so very excited to attend. if i am lucky enough to make a choice between schools, i'll have a lot of thinking to do....

as for the drinks, i am down...and if anyone plans on coming down for a second look weekend (does tulane even have that?) or to look for housing, please let me know...i'd love to meet up and introduce you to the bulldog!! i will probably even end up there tonight to celebrate my acceptance! 🙂

I believe Baylor is private and doesnt participate in the TMDSAS so being out of state shouldn't be too much of a factor. Anyways, good luck and hopefully Ill see you next year! Lets set up something before we start the school year starts 🙂

you'd think, right? even though baylor is private, they get a lot of money from the state of texas. it's a little known fact that they accept WAY more texas residents that oos....128 spots for texas people, 40 for oos. yikes!

hah, ok, it was just that after that "DWIs and hit-and-runs are rites of passage" comment I wondered what other crazy misconceptions people on here had...

I haven't been looking at car prices lately (actually I'll most likely be buying a motorcycle this summer to use in a addition to my car), but I wouldn't think new orleans would be toooo overpriced. The west bank has some pretty big dealerships, more than in metairie etc. If you're buying a remotely new vehicle, rust is not an issue, and if you're buying a car older than that, you most likely know what to look for on your own.

Holy Shiite. Good luck staying alive with all those potholes!😀 😉 The roads here are probably the worst I've ever seen in a city.😱

To the current students,

1. I never got to see the Anatomy lab. How is it? Is it like every other anatomy lab I've ever seen?

2. I never got to see the classrooms either. I heard they were damaged pretty bad by the hurricane. Is that correct? How are they now?

3. Where is there to eat close by the med school? The only place I notcied was the cafeteria (cafeteria is a generous word) where I had my student interview.

4. How responsive is the administration to student needs/suggestions/recommendations?

5. Are opportunities for research at the med school made readily available or do you have to hunt them down? How about summer research programs after you end your first year?

6. About when do you get your financial aid package (assuming I've sent it off fairly recently) back from FAFSA?

7. Is the only PBL in the Foundations in Clinical Medicine class? How is the PBL graded? Is fairly subjective?

8. Do you have BS papers you have to write or is it just tests for the most part?

9. How do you guys go about getting books? Do ppl get the books recommended by the professors or do they go off of recommendations of previous classmates?

10. Are most of the test questions from books or lecture or both?

11. Any recommendations to future T1's concerning certain professors or classes?

I apologize if I or others have already asked these questions on this thread.

Thanks,
HOLDEN

I'll take a crack at some of these questions...these are from the perspective of a Pharmacology Masters student here at Tulane. 😛 😳

1. I never got to see the Anatomy lab. How is it? Is it like every other anatomy lab I've ever seen?

Anatomy lab isnt anything spectacular. There are about 6 tables per room and each room has a smart computer/projector. IMHO its nothing compared to what I saw at my state school (they had 40" LCD tvs at each station) but its very doable.

2. I never got to see the classrooms either. I heard they were damaged pretty bad by the hurricane. Is that correct? How are they now?

The classroom T1s will mainly be using is the big auditorium on the first floor. It was redone recently so it looks just fine. The lecture halls on the higher floors are just fine. There isnt really anything special about the classrooms.

3. Where is there to eat close by the med school? The only place I notcied was the cafeteria (cafeteria is a generous word) where I had my student interview.

There's a subway, quiznos, indian food place, and a couple food courts in walking distance from the school (among other places...)

4. How responsive is the administration to student needs/suggestions/recommendations?

No experience here.

5. Are opportunities for research at the med school made readily available or do you have to hunt them down? How about summer research programs after you end your first year?

No first hand experience here, but from what I heard getting a research project is quite easy. You just go to the department you're interested in and they have a number you can choose from in either bench research or clinical research.

6. About when do you get your financial aid package (assuming I've sent it off fairly recently) back from FAFSA?

No idea.

7. Is the only PBL in the Foundations in Clinical Medicine class? How is the PBL graded? Is fairly subjective?

I know that there are PBLs in Pharmacology and I'm guessing that there are PBLs in some other classes as well but not sure. I dont believe PBL is graded.

8. Do you have BS papers you have to write or is it just tests for the most part?

No idea.

9. How do you guys go about getting books? Do ppl get the books recommended by the professors or do they go off of recommendations of previous classmates?

Either or from what I've seen.

10. Are most of the test questions from books or lecture or both?

Generally from lecture. Usually you get a set of learning objectives for each class that tell you what you need to know.

11. Any recommendations to future T1's concerning certain professors or classes?

No idea.

To the current students,

1. I never got to see the Anatomy lab. How is it? Is it like every other anatomy lab I've ever seen?

6 lab rooms with about 5 tanks per room. Smart board/projector in each room. 6 students per tank. Anatomy is such a small part of your med school experience, but it's funny and understandable how everyone coming in is so concerned or curious about it. Cadaver, book, tools, teacher, and motivation. That's how you learn anatomy. That's how it's been done for ages. All other gadgets in the classroom are superfluous.

2. I never got to see the classrooms either. I heard they were damaged pretty bad by the hurricane. Is that correct? How are they now?

Classrooms are fine

3. Where is there to eat close by the med school? The only place I notcied was the cafeteria (cafeteria is a generous word) where I had my student interview.

Not many places. Hospital cafeteria is opening soon, but expect same kind of food.

4. How responsive is the administration to student needs/suggestions/recommendations?

Very. Several times in my tenure have I seen changes made based on student input.

5. Are opportunities for research at the med school made readily available or do you have to hunt them down? How about summer research programs after you end your first year?

If you want it, it will come.

6. About when do you get your financial aid package (assuming I've sent it off fairly recently) back from FAFSA?

I can't remember. I'm sure it's somewhere out in cyberspace.

7. Is the only PBL in the Foundations in Clinical Medicine class? How is the PBL graded? Is fairly subjective?

PBL's are just another way to learn. Attendace is required, but most of your grade is from the test. Grand scheme of things...PBL's are overrated, at least at Tulane. They're not that many, they're useful, but trust me 80-90% of your learning comes from sitting on your arse and reading. You just read and read. Coffee shops, libraries, home.

8. Do you have BS papers you have to write or is it just tests for the most part?

Tests. If you do MPH I think you may have to do papers. Me no MPH student. MD is multiple choice tests.

9. How do you guys go about getting books? Do ppl get the books recommended by the professors or do they go off of recommendations of previous classmates?

Differs based on your personality. Some trust what other students above them say and don't buy certain books. Others think that other students' opinions are great but I'm a different person, and I just don't feel right without the books so I will buy each book. Both views are reasonable. Just know that early on in the school year, a student based group does a used book sale and sells hand me down textbooks from last year's students for cheap. So avoid buying brand new texts. One book you will not use is Neuroscience (this comes from a guy who wanted a text in each subject). I never opened it.

10. Are most of the test questions from books or lecture or both?

Lectures in the form of the notesets. Most people use the text as reference for stuff they don't understand.

11. Any recommendations to future T1's concerning certain professors or classes?

You'll figure it out when you get there. No worries.

I apologize if I or others have already asked these questions on this thread.

Thanks,

Hand me downs are awesome. I purcahsed a med biochem lippincotts review book and it had all the highlighting and notes done in there for me 👍

Excalibur (who's a T4) was pretty much on target, but I'll add a few comments too.

1. I never got to see the Anatomy lab. How is it? Is it like every other anatomy lab I've ever seen?
yes, it's pretty much like every other anatomy lab.

2. I never got to see the classrooms either. I heard they were damaged pretty bad by the hurricane. Is that correct? How are they now? They were on an upper floor, so not much damage. I just took a test in one of them Friday, and it was exactly as I remembered from preclinical. However, your class, because of the increased size, has to have a bigger classroom. So you'll be in the new auditorium in the new building. I can't remember when they said it would be ready, though, and until it is you'll be in the 1st floor auditorium in the old building. That was underwater for a while, and I haven't been in there to look, but I'm sure excalibur is correct about its current status.

3. Where is there to eat close by the med school? The only place I notcied was the cafeteria (cafeteria is a generous word) where I had my student interview. The cafeteria's actually much better than it was pre-K. It's small, but there's a good variety of stuff. As for other places to eat, there are a couple of places near the new building. One's open now, and the other should open soon.

4. How responsive is the administration to student needs/suggestions/recommendations? To echo excalibur, I've seen a number of changes made based on student input. In fact, in a couple of instances, one class will suggest a change, the change gets made for the following class, who hate it the new way and ask for it to be changed back. Then the following class hates it the old way, and so on. It's kind of funny, if you can take a step back and observe it objectively.

5. Are opportunities for research at the med school made readily available or do you have to hunt them down? How about summer research programs after you end your first year? Here I disagree with excalibur. You have to hunt them down. In fact, I had to come up with my own project from scratch, find a faculty member willing to supervise me, submit it to the IRB as the PI, and then recruit people to help me. If I had needed funding, I'd have had to find that myself as well.

The great thing about Tulane is, you can take the initiative like that, and no one will stop you.

6. About when do you get your financial aid package (assuming I've sent it off fairly recently) back from FAFSA? I got my award notification toward the end of June, after sending my FAFSA in at about this time. I wasn't admitted until May, though, so you may get yours sooner.

7. Is the only PBL in the Foundations in Clinical Medicine class? How is the PBL graded? Is fairly subjective? Most classes have a PBL component, and the grading is usually very simple: did you attend? did you participate? were you irritating or obnoxious? yes/yes/no = full credit

8. Do you have BS papers you have to write or is it just tests for the most part? no papers. there are a couple of group presentations in 2nd year, but that's pretty much it. MPH has papers, homework, mandatory attendance, and group projects and presentations out the wazoo. It's like the total opposite of the MD program. And the straight-MPH students really don't understand how busy we are, so if you can arrange for your groups to be all MD, life will be much easier.

9. How do you guys go about getting books? Do ppl get the books recommended by the professors or do they go off of recommendations of previous classmates? Basically, I looked at the class ahead of me, and bought whatever I saw the smart people using to study.

10. Are most of the test questions from books or lecture or both?
Neither, really. Every course has stated objectives for each topic, and if you learn the objectives, you should do well on the test.

11. Any recommendations to future T1's concerning certain professors or classes? Try to choose people who are good at explaining things to be your notetakers. As for study methods, keep trying different things until you find something that works. Then stick with what works for you regardless of what everyone else is doing. Also, Dr. Hurley likes to write test questions on lecture details that didn't make it into the class notes. And he's a good lecturer, so attending his class is worthwhile, and not nearly as painful as most others.

That's all just my opinion, so it may not be helpful to you at all. The most difficult thing about med school, for me, was realizing that what works for other people won't necessarily work for me. And that what works for me would result in a failing grade for anyone else. There are just no shortcuts, and you have to muddle through and figure it out yourself.

Thx guys for the responses.

I am a 2 x gunner so I am trying to get a head start on my classmates, hopefully screwing them over in the process. 👍

So I thought you guys said earlier there were a group of students who are part of a notetaking service, they get together and compile the notes, and then distribute them to the class. Where in that do you get to choose your notetaker? Does each student distribute their own notes?

Thanks again.

Hopefully, this was in jest. This is definitely not the Tulane attitude. No real competition among peers at Tulane. From my experience faculty and classmates do not want to see students struggle, and if you are struggling faculty and students come to your aid. I've been on both ends. I was very good at anatomy and helped those in need, and I struggled through pathology and got help.

No one student or group of students gets "cut" from med school b/c they're not performing as well in comparison to the other students, so competition isn't necessary. If you pass, you move on. It's that simple. It's independent of everyone else's performance. There are students who want to be AOA (top 20-25% of the class) from day 1 for competitive residencies. I guess to be top 20-25% it does depend what everyone else is doing, but I think that most of these students realize that if they're taking care of their business (getting honors in their classes and clerkships) that they'll get AOA, so it depends more on what you do and not what everyone else is doing.

You do have the right attitude. You should want to do the best you can in your classes. Don't settle for the "I just want to pass attitude". Now, sometimes your best effort may result in just a pass, and there's nothing you can do about that, but definitely strive to get the best grade you can.

Thanks again.

Our first semester each student had to do a noteset for one lecture. At the end of the semester, students volunteered to be official payed notetakers for the rest of 1st year and all of second year. The volunteers were put on a list, and the entire class voted on who they wanted by picking like their top 20 students or so. Then the students receiving the most votes became the official notetakers.

Hopefully, this was in jest.

It was indeed. I apologize. My dry, sardonic "humor" doesn't always translate through the electronic media and I can't quite bring myself to use the most cliched icon in Al Gore's internet (the winky face).

Many thanks again for your help.👍

don't worry....i could totally sense the sarcasm....(my immediate thought was that he HAS to be joking or there is no way he would have been accepted at tulane).

it made me laugh, though...and made me love the tulane atmosphere even more!

Haha thats what I thought. Unless hes the best sniper/gunner out there and fooled the adcoms

so i bought a ticket. i'll be in nola from tues, april 10 to fri, april 13. i wanted to go over the weekend for the french quarter festival, but i have the week off from teaching and it was so much cheaper to go weekdays that i couldn't justify it otherwise. any chance anyone else will be around?

current T1's-- if i was thinking about trying to sit in on a class during that time, any insight?

The choice between New Jersey and New Orleans is no choice at all caligirl. I'll see you in August.

hmph. can we say mdapplicant stalkers? 😎

i'm ready to hand over my deposit in person during my visit in april. but tulane was my first interview, way back when. i need to refresh my memory.

mdapplicant stalkers?

I've been looking at a girl scout cookie and braluk's pelvis for 6 months now. Forgive me if I don't warm up to a girl from cali.🙂

haha, i was trying to figure out how they knew that you had a choice between those two schools...i figured maybe you posted on another thread....

PM me....i live here! since you are here during the week, i'll bring you to the bulldog for wednesday night pint night! 🙂 (man...i should get paid for all of the publicity i am giving them. what can i say...i'm a fan of a good snakebite!...that's my favorite drink, by the way....)

To people that live in New Orleans. When is a good time to come down and look for an apartment? I was thinkin about buying a plane ticket for early June, coming down for a weekend and finding a place. Is this good timing or do I need to sign a lease sooner/earlier? I want to find a lease that starts Aug 1st.

Cheers

Oh yea, I plan on looking mostly in Uptown and around the undergrad. campus.

Lol, disclaimer: that is NOT a x-ray of my pelvis  Let's not start ridiculous rumors about me and coke bottles before we even start the year off

Curious if anyone here stayed in the Med Frat House for their interview. That place was pretty cool and I had a good time there. Probably wouldn't want to live there cause Id probably get no studying done 🙂 I dont think Ill be able to make it down in April- Ill probably go down in May after my gf's graduation and look at places with her.

June is fine, graduating undergrads are leaving and the market should be wide open then.

Has anyone filled out the Financial Aid Addendum? I can't fill it out in adobe reader or professional. I'm trying to avoid handwriting it or converting it to a word file. Any suggestions?

Hey! I just found these boards but wanted to say hi to all my future classmates! I'm definitely going to Tulane next year, and I can't wait. I'm from LA (the city, not the state), and go to school out here too, so I'm ready for a little change of pace. Anyway, just wanted to say hello and congrats to everyone. I'm so excited! 🙂

We have class from 8:30-12 Monday-Friday in the big auditorium on the first floor of the med school. You can just go in and sit down, but if you are worried you can always introduce yourself to the professor, I'm sure they won't mind.

I'm from LA (the city, not the state), and go to school out here too, so I'm ready for a little change of pace.

Hello. My name is HOLDEN.

Howdy from Texas again.... I was wondering if any of the girls are going to live with a roomate. I have terrible roomates now, but I was contemplating giving me d school girls (as opposed to my high maintenance MRS sorority girls, even though I am a sorority girl) a try...

Also, when is everyone going to go and check out housing???

i second hawaiian - june should be fine. you can always do a craiglist or nola.com search before if you are getting ancy, though.

may i also suggest broadmore as a great place to live? yes, it did flood, but renovations are rampant around here and the neighborhood is looking better. it is right next to uptown (i essentially group it with uptown) and you have easy access to the med center....i live here now and can get to the med center in 5 minutes if i take south broad.

as for roommates, i am definitely going to have one since won't be able to afford my current rent when i'm in med school....but i will hope to have my own bathroom (just one of those luxuries you get used to living alone.) i have always enjoyed having a roommate in the past.... but here's my question...give your opinion.....do you think it would be bad for med students to live together? i would think it would be tiresome to see a person all day at school and then at home.....and i would hate to ruin a friendship! 🙂

Most likely June for me. Anyone have facebook? Add me in 🙂 PM me for my name 🙂

stop whoring for friends on facebook, braluk....

so, anyone have myspace? add me in 😉 PM me for my name

I personally like not living with someone in my same class. It's nice to get away from med stuff for awhile. I live with a law student which works well because we have similar student lifestyles (oh except he pretty much never studies) but I don't have to talk about medicine 24 hours a day...just 22 or so. I recommend at least living with someone in a different year.

Or you can do like Kai and room with those guys that sleep in front of Walgreen's.

*shakes fist angrily old grandpa style*

all this fighting over facebook friends and neither of you have sent me a friend request... no love, no love...🙁

done! your friend list is complete now that i am on it 🙂

correction- you mean now that I am on it 🙂

Ahh Jmov looks like you and I are going to get along splendidly.
I can see it now

No thats MY cadaver
No get away, HES MINE

Does anyone know when we actually have to be at school? I definitely haven't heard anything official from Tulane, but maybe some of you current students can tell me when you had to be there in years past. Trying to figure out when I want to go down there, but its not all that easy when I have no idea when I actually have to be there...

Thanks! 🙂

PS: braluk I think you friended me on facebook today...I'm Jamie! Hi!

Someone's really on top of his friend-making game! 😉

Well since Im in Ohio, with all my friends from college and my gf back in boston, and surrounded by nothing but med biochem and med physio books, Ive become quite an internet addict. Hopefully this will change when we head down to NO 😀

aww, i don't have facebook, but i just set up a myspace page to keep in touch with all my friends once i move.

I'm pretty sure we have to be there for the first weekend in august. I think that's when there's a retreat for all the T1s, and the white coat ceremony would follow that monday... it's coming up fast.

when are we going to receive more info from the school? All I got was the MD/MPH stuff...
