actually, a lot of acceptances went out already. but i think it was to make up for their dead months in september and early october.

btw, when did they post that notice to everyone to resend their secondaries?? mid october?

ya i think it says 10/16. well whatever, hopefully a LOT of people will pass up on the good opportunity that Tulane is. i wouldn't mind a waitlist spot. id really like an acceptance eventually though.

Oh no! I loved seeing "Tulane" everytime I go into pre-allo!

I hate when the stickum holding up the stickies gives out and the posts fall... Booo...

what the heck?

we must make it live on!

they're trying to create an illusion of the sinking of new orleans. the mods are katrina and this thread is new orleans. my heart will go on though.

I asked them to.

My post count definitely says I've been spending too much time on SDN for a year and a half. I'm glad you thought it was funny, though. I didn't want to offend someone and half the time it seems like jokes roll the dice. Are people going to get my humor or is it going to be Moose season?

It was funny moose...even for me!

for what it's worth,
last year, i interviewed in the first few days of Feb.
my interviews went really, really well. Dr. Beckman told me, however, that the class was already full and that i was basically interviewing for a watilist spot. she had said not to be discouraged if i get waitlisted b/c the list moves quickly after May 15th.
one week later, i got my waitlist, and i was generally pretty excited.
then came the awfulness. the waitlist just did not move. each month, nothing. last year's thread was basically a bunch of people like me waiting miserably. then they cut most of wailist in may, and i was excited again b/c i didnt' get cut.
long story short, dr. beckman said in the summer that things looked promising and she hoped it would work out, but they just couldn't tell b/c they weren't sure of who would drop and who would keep, plus the Aug 4th start date was really early.
i didn't get it, the hurricane hit, i felt pretty lucky (despite my house being trashed), and when i talked to Mrs Vargas in september, she said again for me not to worry b/c my interview scores were good. a few weeks later, i got accepted w/ no interview. my letter was mailed Oct. 15th to Beantown, and i got it on Oct 27th. and now, i am slacking off in every single aspect of my life. it's a great feeling that i wish for all of ya'll.
anyways,
i think their class will fill up soon, but there will be a lot more movement this year than last year. good luck.

whoa whoa what? first, congrats on your acceptance!!! but, you didn't have to apply again?

no dude. as soon as classes started on Aug 4th (and i wasn't in them), i submitted my secondary app. with a couple of changes.
post Katrina, i called again to see if i would need to resubmit my crap and see if i should send in updates, and i was told "not to worry" and to not bother. i was told that i wouldn't need to interview again b/c my scores from the '05 cycle were high. (a committee of five reads and grades your file and your 3 interviewers grade you as well). so i did reapply, but no interview, and acceptance in october. basically, i think my app was treated like an EDP app, even though i didn't apply early to tulane.

triggity--

well.... do u think stats matter that much at tulane??

also, doesn't beckman read the apps? or is she part of that committee of 5?

for this year, how is the committe of 5 possible? i think becman and vargas are the only two tulane faculty over there... i think beckan is the committee of one.

beckman and dr. kahn will definitely be on the committee. they will decide, but don't forget, your interviewers will have a strong say as well.
i interviewed with beckman, so i imagine she was one of the "committee" members for me. your student interview, and your other interview will also contribute.
trust me, students and faculty who are in houston now, and then in NOLA later, will have a say in the class for next year. they are more about tight community and getting the inputs from within the tulane family than ever before, and i don't think that will change. i have a friend who's a 3rd year there in houston now and she's already done a student interview. maybe it's all BS, but i imagine her input will be taken seriously and will be included in the candidate's file just like in previous years.

yea dude, im curious as to what your avg posts per day is... wouldn't it have to be around 18? thats crazy man.

moose season is closed indefinitely. endangered species. 😀

i am depressed. how come a lot of other people who resent their secondaries to the p.o. box got an interview with similar stats and i didn't??
does this mean i am rejected and i will only find out if i call them? i hear this is what happened to beponychick. afraid to call, actually.

Wait, who is it that we're calling here? I talked to Susanna and she said that our applications are in NO and she's in Houston and has no idea.

Hey, just to keep this thread alive, what specialities are you guys considering (if you have started thinking about it : ) )

my interview is in january in New Orleans. i was under the impression that all the students are still gonna be in Houston...is that incorrect? are only the M3 and M4s coming back? i don't get it.

From what I heard last, the medical school will be staying in Houston through the spring, although Public Health and Tropical Medicine are coming back to NO in January. The T3s and T4s (starting next year) may stay in Houston for longer because of the current lack of training opportunities in NO. The T1s and 2s should be in NO for the pre-clinical stuff. This isn't the gospel, just what I remember hearing.

well i ended up calling today. and the lady in houston gave me the number of the person in new orleans, because she told me that person is responsible for processing the secondaries that were resent to the gretna p.o. box. i tried calling the lady a few times today in new orleans, get nothing but voicemail.

waaah, i wanna interview!

bubbleyum, i sympahtize.

you have to call susanna vargas. she can check your entire STATUS from there, from payment of the $95 fee to the secondary to the LORs.

if you call and end up with someone from the baylor college of medicine, get in touch with susanna. she is like always at the phone. and if she doesn't pick up immediately, it means she is on the phone with another student.

keep in mind the time diff also. in PA right now, it's 6:30PM, but in texas, it's one hour behind.

Seriously, she just told me the files were in NO and to wait. Help???

yeah u have to wait then. the POBOX is in NO. so you have to wait until those secondaries kept shipped over to baylor or so.

sorry,,,

It is about 18, but that can happen in about 9 minutes if you're not careful. A lot of them came from some times when I was working 12 hour shifts in front of a computer and SDN was my mental breaktime activity.

i leave town for one measly day and... third page?? come on guys.

btw, "the chicago medical school" = not in chicago.

why not call it the "not quite chicago medical school"

or the "one and a half hour north of chicago medical school"

or the "we wish we were in chicago so were calling ourselves the chicago medical school"

false advertising!

i just pulled this off of Tulane's website:

The file, usually within one week of the interview date, goes before the full Admission Committee for evaluation. The Committee may decide to accept or reject the applicant or put the applicant on the "acceptance range" list, a non-ranked wait-list. No mathematical formulae are used in making this decision and no specific guidelines are given to committee members in regard to a particular weight to be placed upon MCAT's, GPA, or other parts of the completed application. The final decision is a subjective one, based upon the opinions of no fewer than five members of the Committee.

is this true for those of you that have interviewed this fall? did decisions really come that quickly? thanks for the info.

I interviewed on Oct. 7 I believe, still haven't heard anything. I have a weird feeling that I might tomorrow though haha

good luck. i hope you get it.

honestly, i perfectly know two people who interviewed back in october and both got accepted within a week... via SNAIL MAIL!

Thanks for wishing me luck Mota. Actually my biggest fear is that they mailed the acceptance or whatever to my New Orleans address, where it would then have to be forwarded to New York. That would suck haha :scared: . I don't know how the USPS forwarding works though, maybe it would automatically be sent up here

Also, are there any Tulane med students on these boards? Do you guys know anything about the Class of 2010 or how the acceptances are being sent out?

damn. thats insane. i hope that happens for me. by the way what do you mean you "perfectly know two people", everyone's got skeletons in their closet.

I've heard of waiting-list people from last year getting invites in mid-October, but I contacted some people who interviewed my day and nobody has word yet....maybe an unlucky day.....

Hey, I interviewed on 10/20 and got an acceptance letter dated 11/3 on 11/8. So about a 2 week turn around time. Though I feel like I remember people who interviewed the same week as me hearing back sooner, but I could have imagined that. Do we know for sure that they review the files in order of interview date? Also, just so you know, the acceptance comes in a small, thin enevelope.

yo.

i interviewed 10/14, received tenative acceptance notice ~2 weeks later, official word (after a mail crisis) via snail mail dated 11/3 (understandably, their mail system is a little tweaked right now 😉 )

i know of at least one other person on here that interviewed the same day (a friday) and got her letter sent on saturday (recieved on monday), although she was waitlisted from the c/o 2009.

one of my friends at school interviewed two days before me (a wednesday)and got his letter on the same monday...

so, essentially their response time varies pretty significantly and just b/c you haven't heard within two weeks doesn't necessarily mean anything bad.

I read somewhere else that they ask you to send a deposit within 2 weeks of receiving an acceptance, so I'm not sure what effect that could have on reports thus far.

the deposit is not due until may 15. thank goodness (I'm broke and i doubt they'll accept my broke-a$$ credit card...)

its 500 bones and its nonrefundable.

suzanna v. is the bomb!

I just got in touch with the Tulane admissions staff.......my letter will be sent to the right address and it contains good news 😉 . I appreciate everyone's advice and I hope that all of you that are interviewing have good luck

I have an interview mid-december during the week of the 12th (their final week before the holiday). I super regret calling back almost a full day after the e-mail request -- I'm sure I could have gotten an earlier interview, but I was too much in shock to do anything right at that moment.

Does anyone know how many interviews they do per week? I believe it is something like 6 per day, according to someone I know there.

How do interview invites work? Did Dr. B just look over applications and say "bring them in"?

Any other information about how their class is looking, or how they're arriving at decisions, etc.?

Boy, I'm so nervous! My application is generally decent (Ivy, great EC's, strong statement, superlative MCAT, but meh GPA due to fam crisis - however, explained appropriately). I was invited to interview without a secondary or letters, but I'm having those sent asap.

I really really hope they don't fill up the class by the time I interview. What's more, since I'm interviewing in the week before Christmas, I'm not sure how much time they'll have to convene and make decisions.

I read somewhere else that they ask you to send a deposit within 2 weeks of receiving an acceptance, so I'm not sure what effect that could have on reports thus far. Colleges will send more acceptances than available spots for undergrad, but who knows if that's the same for here.

And yes, the secretary / admissions specialist is great; I am tempted to make an entire thread dedicated to the apotheosis of Susana Vargas. I gather she's sort of a diva type, so be prepared to acquiesce to her 🙂

me: "My situation is sort of complicated"
SV: "Well, our lives are complicated right now, so what's up"

However, she's tremendously helpful, so use her if necessary.

Good luck to everyone!

(and so ends my very first post on psychoticpremed.net... bah, I VOWED to myself never to browse or post, but ... AHH, I succumb to the temptation)

i dunno. i've heard so many great things about susanna vargas on this thread, but when i called the number for her yesterday the lady who answered was not helpful at all. i told her i was an 06 applicant who had to resnd all their stuff to the gretna po box address,a nd if she could verify that everything's been received in houston for review. she said she does not know why everybody is calling her and she did not even want to try looking me up!

maybe i had the wrong lady. she had a "unfeminine" voice and a foreign accent?

that is her, all right. foreign? i take it you're not from a place where there are many hispanic people 🙂

but seriously, i don't think your approach was right. you have to remember that they've haphazardly relocated to houston, that things are in flux. she can't just look up your information because it's probably not at her office or at her fingertips. i don't think they're able to be as organized as other schools, to simply look up all applicants 🙂 and you'd expect her to go through a huge stack of apps/information to dig yours out? that's a little too much, i think, even though it means a lot to you. if you've sent everything in a neat package, i'm sure it'll be systematically reviewed and you'll get an interview invite - be confident!

susana isn't rude, she's just swamped and overworked... if you ask her to do something she can easily do, then i'm sure you'll be successful... maybe ask her what's the status of the gretna apps, etc.

in my opinion, having a PO box for everything wasn't the greatest decision on their part... i think they'll have a lot of mail to go through over xmas.

congrats tulane06 on your acceptance 😀

Congrats Tulane06! That is great news. Also, I second the Susanna being awesome statement. She is overwhelmed, but she is such a nice person and I believe goes above and beyond what any admission specialist has done (in my experience with other schools).
