I have an interview mid-december during the week of the 12th (their final week before the holiday). I super regret calling back almost a full day after the e-mail request -- I'm sure I could have gotten an earlier interview, but I was too much in shock to do anything right at that moment.

Does anyone know how many interviews they do per week? I believe it is something like 6 per day, according to someone I know there.

How do interview invites work? Did Dr. B just look over applications and say "bring them in"?

Any other information about how their class is looking, or how they're arriving at decisions, etc.?

Boy, I'm so nervous! My application is generally decent (Ivy, great EC's, strong statement, superlative MCAT, but meh GPA due to fam crisis - however, explained appropriately). I was invited to interview without a secondary or letters, but I'm having those sent asap.

I really really hope they don't fill up the class by the time I interview. What's more, since I'm interviewing in the week before Christmas, I'm not sure how much time they'll have to convene and make decisions.

I read somewhere else that they ask you to send a deposit within 2 weeks of receiving an acceptance, so I'm not sure what effect that could have on reports thus far. Colleges will send more acceptances than available spots for undergrad, but who knows if that's the same for here.

And yes, the secretary / admissions specialist is great; I am tempted to make an entire thread dedicated to the apotheosis of Susana Vargas. I gather she's sort of a diva type, so be prepared to acquiesce to her 🙂

me: "My situation is sort of complicated"
SV: "Well, our lives are complicated right now, so what's up"

However, she's tremendously helpful, so use her if necessary.

Good luck to everyone!

(and so ends my very first post on psychoticpremed.net... bah, I VOWED to myself never to browse or post, but ... AHH, I succumb to the temptation)

to answer your qusetions... i'm interviewing 4 days before you are....

susanna says they interview M - R. thanksgiving week is an exception of course.

5 people interview per day.

at my undergrad R=thursday.

cool. btw cbt we have similar stats, i hope you land some interviews soon.

so at this rate it looks like they'll probably have sent out most of their acceptances by jan 2006. kind of a bummer but there will be loads of waitlist movement this year due to the fact that even if people are still willing to attend Tulane, it is no longer many people's TOP choices, so I think if people are holding multiple acceptances, many will drop Tulane. so dont worry, waitlists in this circumstance are not so bad. i hope you all can tell that i'm psyching myself up for a waitlist spot.

I do know a lot of people who before Katrina thought of Tulane as a top choice, and now while they are waiting for multiple acceptances from excellent schools are pretty sure that they will not be heading to NO despite what the admissions committee decides.
Myself on the other hand would pack my bags and be on my way, but alas, no interview....

lets just hope they withdraw and make way for the non-fairweather fans.

I'm holding out for the school because one of my best friends in the world goes there... I know, ******ed reason to go, but sanity for 4 years is worth something. I can't bring myself to care about other schools, though I have interviews elsewhere as well. :\ all my friends think I'm crazy b/c they know my MCAT score (I'm a standardized test person... I took the lsats/gmats/etc. for the princeton review)

but...

well let's do some simple calculations.

I guess they started interviewing in october. 4 weeks. nov has 3 weeks, dec will have 2. that's 9 weeks * 4 days/wk * 5 interviews/day. That's "only" 180 people, with a two-week, 40 interviewee margin of error.

Given that their class is 155 (I think), and they should *ideally*/theoretically accept 300, then I think you have a good chance, damota.

i like your calculating work. very encouraging. but you also gotta add in a bunch of people that interviewed and were waitlisted last year and were offered acceptances right off the bat this year without even having to interview. they also interviewed *some* people before katrina, i really have no clue how many. but ya, i'm trying to be pretty optimistic about it.

btw, i like how you assumed they were accepting EVERYONE they interviewed. haha. awesomeness

Tulane seems dope. I'm definitely interested and sitting on an acceptance. But, I'm concerned about the lack of hospital wards opening for awhile. From my understanding, only the emergency department is open at present with no patients being admitted. Anyone have any idea the projected date for when Tulane University Hospitals and Clinics is going to open? It seems like it'll take awhile to get everything set up--equipment, technicians, nurses, docs, administrative staff, etc. Is 9 months enough time to ball up and start running a hospital?

Haha, yeah, assumptions are awesome.

Angus: congrats!
I think I read somewhere that they'd have things open in January, since there are so many people doing residency there. And what does it matter to you anyway, you're not starting your clerkship yet 😉

Also, I read that the concern wasn't mainly about rebuilding capital equipment, etc. but about actually having patients for the residents. (obviously that will change)

oh wait, maybe I shouldn't be encouraging you quite yet if I still want to get in... heh heh... just kidding.

ps - good work, men. we need to ensure this thread stays high!

good question. i don't think anyone can really predict the answer though. i plan on talking to my friend who goes there this weekend but he's only an M1 and has been in Houston forever so i doubt he'll know too much. But also keep in mind that the majority of Tulane's clinical exposure come when you are an M3/M4, so hopefully 2 YEARS and nine months is more than enough time to get a hospital up and running. i'm also going to be interviewing in new orleans in january so i'll be sure to raise some of these questions. hope to be your classmate some day.

haha, I love your avatar, mota - I spent 6 hours straight watching BORAT (and ali + bruno) before my MSSM interview, maybe that's why I haven't heard back yet. oops.

for those of you who resubmitted their apps and have received some sort of response or interview invite, how long did it take? i resubmitted mine in october but i still haven't heard from them. i think i will call them tomorrow. 🙁

That's right, the first two years are preclinical, so if the clinical opportunities are a little lacking it is not a huge emergency. I'm sure all the infrastructure will be back in time for you to start your rotations etc. Also, grats on your acceptance!

tulane- are you pretty set on tulane? or waiting on other schools?
-mota

I would say 90% set. I was actually an early decision applicant, but due to the circumstances I was released from that agreement. I have interviews with Downstate and USUHS....I am pretty sure I will cancel Downstate and I will probably try to get an HPSP scholarship in lieu of going to the military med school, so I may end up not interviewing there either. Do you have a set choice yet or just waiting to see what happens?

its pretty up in the air. I would love to go to Tulane cuz it's always been my top choice (if you dig back far enough you can find a thread i started called "what are your top 3" and Tulane is my #1). so if i get in, i will most likely go, but i doubt i would withdraw from other schools or anything quite yet. we'll see. keeping my fingers crossed.

sure, 10/19. i really dont think they had my secondary though when they invited me cuz i had called a few days earlier and they said they didn't. i think they're inviting just based on the primary right now but i have no clue really.

Much obliged. Yeah, when you're an MS1/2 you do little but hold retractors and give the occasional physical exam. But, for those of us interested in gaining an edge for residency, being able to conduct a research project, shadow a neurosurgeon, and/or play around in a basic science lab are pretty important options we would like to have. From my understanding, if labs and wards are still running at low-capacity, these opportunities would be limited. I asked Dr. Beckman this during the interview, she couldn't say much, just to wait and hope for the best. Don't get me wrong. Tulane's still dope. Just something to think/converse about.

so does anybody know a number where i can call to check on the status of my secondary that was sent to the gretna address? i tried calling susanna vargas at least 3 times. but she told me that she didn't have access to the application so she couldn't look it up.

BOOYAKASHA!

Congrats! Welcome to the class of 2010!

I really think Suzi V is your best source. Other than that I would call the Tulane Admissions Office in New Orleans: 504-988-5187. You'll probably talk to Karen Joia, and she is sweet!

hey guys,

several people have asked me about the Tulane Viewbook PDF that I had saved on my computer. click on this link and you (might) should be able to download (or at least the first 25 people). if it doesn't work, pm me...

BTW, 4th page = all time low 😉

tulane06 said:
Cool, I think you can also find the viewbook at www.som.tulane.edu, after clicking on "students" and then "prospective students." BTW we are on the 12th page now ! 🙂

i'll be damned... 🙄
(i had to dig down to the 4th page to pull up this thread.)

hehehe

After sending my secondary in on 11/10 - i just got an e-mail requesting it today. I guess I need to make sure someone knows that it is there!

Bump back up....Tulane SOM Aug 2006!!!!

By the way, Larry David is getting funnier and funnier at time goes by...the episode 2 weeks ago, with the nurse who was "hiding" Larry's cell phone and the baseball was HILARIOUS...as was the most recent episode. Unfortunately, season finale next week? How many episodes are in a season, 8? (Made that number up)

What up Goose - hows the waiting for next fall coming? I am thinking about hunting for a research job this summer - you think they will be hiring for labs? It would be cool to get to Nawlins a little early and get settled...

curb fans. i think i've found my niche. pretty pretty...preeeeetty cool.

So, when he prepares to stare someone down to see if they are lying, does he have something he is really looking for or is it just destined to be an awkward moment that ends in his patented ".......long pause.......ok?"

I'd go with the latter haha. BTW have you decided on Tulane for certain Kitra?

Hey guys,

I was just accepted to Tulane and wanted to let you all know that I'll most likely be there next year as well. I was excited by their program and MPH opportunities, and totally blown away by the students.

I'm currently in the northeast, but planning a trip to New Orleans to get a better feel for the city (read: Mardi Gras) and would love to meet up with as many of you as possible while I'm there!

Fear kept me from posting before I heard from my first school, but now I can relax a bit and become a contributing member of the sdn family!

Kitra: I've sent in my deposit and have withdrawn my other applications....I'm going 🙂 !

Philly: Awesome, I will be back in New Orleans for the spring semester so if you want to have a meeting or get-together of some sort I'm down. Mardi Gras will be pretty good this year .

BTW, My name is Jason. Should we maybe start a group or listserv for the class of 2010 at Tulane?

Hahaha....I like it...I think the class of 2010 is a great idea...as is Mardi Gras....hope I can get off work...anyone else thinking about being there this summer?

Okay, I have a question for you guys. I sent in my application in October to the Gretna address, and got an email a few days ago that from the admissions office with the secondary attached. I'd already filled it out and sent it in, so I wrote them back and asked about the status of my application. I was told to email Karen Joia and ask about the status. So I just got an email from her and all it said was
Please call the office and we will be able to tell you the status of
your application. 504-988-5187.
Is this time to panic? Why won't they tell me through email? I mean, do I have to call to be told I'm rejected?

Sorry to complain and be paranoid, I just wanted to know if anyone had ever been given a rejection over the phone.

don't worry, I don't think you're rejected. The fact that they sent you a seondary by email indicates that they just got your primary, and not necessarily your secondary.

As I see it, they are using AMCAS/primary to screen applicants for interview, then secondary+recs+interview to judge acceptance post-interview.

mustang sally-
i'm guessing that when you call they're gonna tell you you either have an interview or are complete. it wont be bad news. i got my invite through e-mail

does anyone have any clue on how filled up the class is? if you're interviewing in december, ask for me and i'll love you long time.
-mota

Thanks for the reassurance. I'll be sure to let you guys know, and if I find out how full the class is I'll post that here too!
