Tulane?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
did anyone's interviewer tell him/her, "YOU ARE DEFINITELY GETTING IN" ???

Not verbatim but I got a " You definately have the grades, you got an interview within the first three weeks and you'd obviously fit in here.."

Needless to say I felt good coming out of that interview

I also was told almost that exact thing. not to crush your hopes or anything. I was told by my interviewer that I already was going to tulane so we know you aren't scared off by katrina that's a plus. you are the first in your family to go to med school a plus (to the interviewer) and I definitely see you getting in. I was also told by my student interview/lunch person that oh your interviewing before early you'll definitely get in because if you interviewed early they already like you... so acceptance range was a hard blow. just my experience. you could definitely get in and then just make my situation last year all the more sad lol...

we shall see. i definitely had a great feeling😀 after the interview and i was blown away by this interviewer's profuse compliments😳--- i just don't want to get my hopes up:scared:. I will have patience🙄 and see what happens over the next few weeks :meanie:

so i tried calling Tulane again since it's now almost 4 weeks since my interview (plus they told me last week to call back now)...and it won't put me thru. i press 1 and it keeps cycling me back thru the menu...i'm so nervous i'm about to cry! 👎

Congrats!!!!!

just interviewed. loved it. now playing the waiting game with all of you for a while!

as much as i loved it there, i'm declining my acceptance-- hope it helps out one of you on the waitlist! 👍

Just withdrew on Friday. Hope this helps someone! 😀

ahhhhhhhh they could make a decision about me on tuesday!!

Just thought I'd add myself to the virtual waiting room of recent Tulane interviewees...It's been a little over 2 wks since my interview, so I'm getting anxious to hear from them, even though I know it'll probably be another 2 or more before I do. Congrats to all of those who have been accepted!

i interviewed on october 21st, didn't get my acceptance (i live in san francisco) 'till november 25th or so.

the mail situation in new orleans is still having trouble, from what i'm told.

after 3 weeks, i sent an email - they gave me the news the next day via a response. so, if you're sweating, try email!

best of luck everybody. it was my one and only interview so far, so chances are i'll be in new orleans next year.

i'm interviewing this friday - wish me luck! i already have an acceptance at one of my state schools (michigan state), and even though i really love the school, i'm wondering if tulane might be an even better fit for me cuz i'm so passionate about medicine for the underserved and where better to go than post-katrina new orleans? anyway, we'll see how it goes! sounds like the whole interview day is pretty chill. if anyone can post on this thread sometime tonight about how the interview day was structured, that'd be awesome. thanks!

If you are interested in helping the underserved, make sure you ask about what is going to happen to the Charity Hospital system post Katrina. I know it was a big debate when I left in July. I know Tulane is still dealing with a lot of underserved patients, but since Charity is no longer there, I am not sure how they are doing it.

At my interview, all of us interviewees first had about an hour of informal conversation with two current med students . . . then I had two thirty minute inverviews back to back, roughly an hour and a half to roam around the med school, and then a student interview at lunch. After lunch we had a student-led tour which finished around 2PM. As other people have mentioned, it was all very laid-back and informal. Definetly wouldn't get too nervous about it, just try to enjoy yourself. Good luck!

I think they mentioned at my interview that University Hospital is trying to take on the former Charity cases.

I think you are correct.

I don't think that is a permanent fix though. Of course, that issue will be decided by the LA government, not Tulane Medical School.

I also wonder if they are seeing as many underserved patients now that the population of the city is about 1/2 of what it was.

anyone know if they have decent waitlist movement? =(

The permenant fix is the new hospital that will be built by 2012 to replace Charity and Univerity Hospitals called the Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans. Funding is still pending, though.

And there's the answer. Thanks. Will the new hospital follow Charity's old mission?

Unfortunately I don't think that it was the underserved half of the city that left, in case you didn't notice the huge camp of homeless people in front of City Hall. Charity definitely needs to be fixed or replaced.

I don't know, I was there from Summer '05 until Summer '07 (not counting the six months I was displaced) and it didn't seem to me that any one demographic remained in large numbers while the others stayed.

Of course, that's highly anecdotal in nature. The camp of homeless people in front of C. Ray's office must be a recent development.

I was curious to know what all those tents were doing in a park. Now I know
It does worry me that the camp growing every day. It's not that I'm worried that its there, but rather that when the city hall folks eventually get sick of it (and they will) clearing everyone off could involve a good sized riot less than a block away from the hospital.

I wouldn't put a lot of faith in City Hall doing anything proactive. They still haven't fixed the damn city hall sign, after all.

If I thought clearing away the camp would help the city in any way I wouldn't be worrying about them doing it.

thanks so much for your help! i'll let you all know how it goes.

Submitting a letter of intent today. 😍
I'm in that lovely acceptance range, let's see how it goes.

p.s. Good Luck to all interviewees!

I know they didn't have any waitlist movement during last cycle.

Probably not the answer you wanted to hear. Sorry.

they were going to accept fewer people at first this year though, right? i think i remember something along those lines...

That's what they told us. They also told us this class would be bigger. Anyone have any tips for deciding between state schools and a school like Tulane? I want to decide soon because I don't want to hold spots, but I'm having a lot of trouble.

I am not sure about that. I heard it on SDN, but don't know if it is true. My interview isn't until January so I haven't gotten the whole admissions briefing.

has anyone who interviewed two weeks ago contacted tulane?

I interviewed end of October, called in two weeks and they hadn't made a decision. I figured with Thanksgiving the following week they wouldn't meet, but I got back to my apartment Sunday after the holiday and had an acceptance letter! 🙂 I remember they said at my interview we could call in two weeks but it would probably be at least three...so call if you want, but I'd think they probably won't have anything until at least next week. Good luck! I'm so excited I got in!

Hey guys, Im a current T1 here. Seems like other tulane students have made their way onto these boards here. Im also an SMP graduate for those who have questions about it helping out. Anyways, once I get some time I'll go through some of these posts for any unanswered questions. Feel free to PM me or IM me any questions and I'll gladly oblige. Good luck until then!! I love NOLA! I also would like to say that I met phoenix on her interview date, albeit shortly, in the student lounge while I was shooting some pool and she is awesome. 😀

EDIT:
Im going to post here a PM i sent to other students asking for interview advice last year. Apparently it helped some of them get into Tulane and was even told by them in the first few weeks that the advice I gave was helpful. Im sure they pulled most of their own strings but this cant hurt:

Hey, honestly my best advice is, be yourself. That is, talk to the interviewers, like you would talk to a good friend, minus the unprofessional stuff. They want to see someone down to earth and someone they can hang out with for the next four years to fit into their family. Make it known to them that you want to be in New Orleans, and that you really want to be at Tulane- list your reasons and back it up. Remember- they are choosing family members, not just med students. Questions were really easy, almost like a conversation- why tulane, why medicine, etc. etc. i got no healthcare questions, nothing like that. your interviewer will bring up some topics from your Personal statement- things to just talk about. Just act natural and don't force anything. Be cool, be laid back. Your student interview is pretty important as well- you have an informal lunch with him or her, and just chat- this is important because they value studentinput, as it is probably one of their best ways to assess if a student will fit in socially with their family members or not. Review over some of SDNs stuff- remember to come off enthuasiastic that you are in New Orleans- possibly the most culturally rich city in the United States, and that you would love coming to Tulane. If you're a gunner- put that aside. They do not want to see ultra competitive, top of the class ivy league, cocky student. put yourself in your interviewer's shoes and interview yourself and evaluate to see if you would invite yourself to your own family to live with you and hang out for the next half a decade. Good luck!

PS: Dont forget, NOLA is a city of culture and music and arts. If you have any experience playing instruments, or artistic in anyway or have some cool cultural background, MENTION IT

It happens. Its certainly a valid reason why you might have been rejected from there. They are very careful to select students who fall into the same range category. Most adcoms seemed to have figured out the profile of the students that are most likely to go there so they accept students that probably fit that mold. 41MCAT and 3.97 is quite exceptional, and way above and beyond the avg of most schools so unless you showed some keen interest or connection to Tulane or dazzled them to assure them that you would go there given your stats, the odds may be stacked against you. congrats on your other acceptances.

So who else is interviewing on the 6th? Its coming up and I am getting excited! I am staying at the Wyndham waterfront, anyone else?

Could you all share how long it roughly took for you to hear back from Tulane with an interview invitation after you received their "your file is currently under review" status update? Thank you kindly!

braluk, Do you know if the school is going to be open around new years? I'm heading down there for the sugar bowl and wanted to see some more of the new building since it wasn't completely finished(auditorium) when I was down for my interview

my file was complete back in mid-august. that was while they still had the phone-in status updates, so I didn't get an email saying it was complete (I don't think I did, at least, unless I deleted it for some reason, but I don't think I would have). anyways, I got an interview invite (via email) on Oct 9 for the end of November. hope that helps!

I mailed my application matierials end of sept~ Tulane confirmed complete mid october, interview invite end of november, interview scheduled for mid jan~ moved to early Jan b/c I'll be in the area...

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!! I love this school *so* much.

dear tulane,

the daily mail-check is driving me insane. please contact me soon (with good news of course...bad news can wait). Thanks.

love, pennnylane

i know i shouldn't be so impatient. it's been 3 weeks since my interview...I hadn't expected a response for 4 weeks, but since a lot of people said they heard in about 3, now i'm all antsy. I'm not quite sure I'm ready to call and possibly here the word "rejected" pronounced out-loud.

you interviewed the same day as me! i got the letter yesterday (they mailed them out 11/30) but if you call the admissions office like i did, they can tell you over the phone.

And I interviewed the same day as them, called yesterday, and no decision had been made. As painful as it is, I guess we'll just have to wait a little longer.

Anyone think that it hurts that I was not interviewed by either Dr. Beckman or Father Don?

It seems like EVERYONE else was. They seemed like especially cool people so I am kind of bummed that I didn't get to interview with them.

while i found father don to be a very cool person, our interview was actually not very substantial at all - and everyone else who interviewed with him that day said the same thing. he pretty much asked gpa/mcat, volunteer activities, and why tulane. so while he's a good person to know if you matriculate there, it's not really a big deal if you didn't interview with him. what's most important is if you made a good impression with the people you DID meet, because those are the ones who are advocating for you with the adcom.
