That's a total bummer, but very understandable. Did you apply anywhere that you may have an acceptance offer before the interview? You seemed very excited about your Western interview. Any chance you'd hear something before the last week of Feb? That might make your decision for you.

I really doubt I'd hear back from either Western or Minnesota before the last week of Feb 🙁. Tuskegee's interview week is between the other two interviews I've already booked flights for, and besides being financially prohibitive, that week is riddled with exams and presentations that I've already had to reschedule twice. My professors are very understanding (I can't say the same about my boss (wtffff??)), but my grades for a class that Western requires are based almost entirely on in-class participation/presentations.

The only way I'll have a shot at going to Tuskegee to interview is if I get the earliest interview slot on the very first day. It'll rest perfectly with my work and presentation schedule, and I can ask for another makeup date for the exam. But it really leaves no breathing room if I have delayed flights or cancellations of any sort.
 
Maybe you should call them before they schedule them and tell them that is the only slot that you can make it to. That way they can leave it open for you!

Thanks for the info.!! I had read through the interview questions already but I still keep thinking that they'll ask a an "out-of-the-blue" random question that I'll have no clue how to answer. I just keep telling myself I'll do great - it's just so difficult believing it though. I just want the interview to happen already!!!

How are you all getting to tuskegee?

The cheapest flight I found is to Atlanta, and there is a $65 shuttle to the campus hotel.

I was driving, but now I'm not so sure. I keep oscillating between driving/flying. Either way it will be a costly venture.

After going back and forth between driving (7 hrs) and flying (4.5 hrs to Montgomery airport with a stop in Atlanta), I finally decided to book a flight. I'll have to rent a car and drive to Tuskegee during rush hour but I'm hoping it won't be too bad. The Kellogg hotel has an indoor pool, so if it's open, I'll unwind a bit before my interview the next day.
 
Not a bad plan! I hadn't considered anything about the pool.

Did all of y'all apply to other schools, or was Tuskegee your only application? It seems from other's comments that its often a last choice or back-up school amongst applicants. That's actually opposite from me, but I was curious about your opinions.

I applied to 6 other schools.

I'm pretty sure it is a last choice for a lot of people who apply to schools like cornell, penn, tufts, or their in-state school.

I really think that their website and online application really turn people away. Compared to other schools, they have little in-depth info about them on their website.
 
Does anyone have any suggestions for a cost-effective method of transportation between Montgomery Airport and the Kellogg hotel besides renting a car? I'm a little worried that the taxi might cost me a hefty sum 🙁

You could try a shuttle. If it's $65 from Atlanta as c17lat said then surely it would be cheaper from Montgomery. Just a thought- although you've probably already checked into that route.
 
I don't know of any shuttles that run to Montgomery. I'm pretty sure it only goes to Atlanta and the towns between Auburn and Atlanta (opposite direction on the interstate from Montgomery).
 
Yeah, I looked into shuttles from Montgomery specifically, and I think it was just comparable to taking a taxi... they were private shuttles/limo services and not the hotel-type shuttle I needed. I considered renting a car, but because I'm under 25, I have to pay $25-27 extra on top of the rental fees. It came out to be around $50-$70 depending on the company.

One idea I briefly entertained (and did not completely think through haha) was to take the taxi to the nearest bus station and bus it from there, but I'd be landing in Montgomery on Sunday for a Mon. interview... and there isn't a Sunday schedule for buses apparently. Am I missing something?
 
You might want to look into Greyhound bus. It's not a great option, but it is an option from both Atlanta and Montgomery. We will take a rental car from Atlanta on Friday, and return on Saturday afternoon, after a morning interview and tour. Good luck!

Did you get an interview specifically for serp ? I thought that determination was made only AFTER interviews..anyone know more about this?
 
I applied for direct admittance (basically for Class of 2014) but was offered an interview for SERP (basically said meet requirements for interview but not direct admittance and would go through SERP blah blah blah for acceptance). I guess no one else's said that so maybe I wont be competing with that many people for a seat in SERP

That's interesting. I was not at all aware the SERP selection was made in this manner. I sure can't give you any guidance on the number of people you're competing with for a SERP seat, but my gut says they're in your favor. If you take your data just off SDN posts, there are about 6 of us that applied to and are interviewing at Tuskegee. The real number, however, is more in the 130s. Either we've got a whole fleet of hopeful Tuskegee SVM lurkers or they aren't on SDN.

On a down note, guess that means I'm either in or out. It sounds like the rest of us don't even get considered for SERP. Ok, now I'm starting to get nervous...

Scroll up to the first page of this thread. I asked the same thing and GACowgirl explained what she knew. I think that tidbit all we have to go on. I did find a tiny blip on their website, but her info was more in depth.

Of you that were offered an interview are most of you still planning to go? I feel like all the schools are letting people know and didn't know if a lot of you had planned on Tuskegee being a back up school? I don't understand why people view TU as a backup. I am very excited for my interview!! Good luck to all!
 
It's too early, but as of right now, I would choose LSU if I got off the waitlist. I don't really have enough info to decide. I have never been to Tuskegee and actually don't know that much about their program. I have some research to do before my interview and after I see the school, my decision might change. Still holding out hope for UF too...

I'm still going. I have had a western interview, and need to schedule my st .georges one. Western is my current choice but the fact that I still hav 2 interviews left may change my mind. That and westerns high tuition.
 
Do we have any idea how many they are interviewing? I was told they interview like 300+ but the email had like 130 emails...

As for Tuskegee as a back up, I never really thought of it that way, but I can see how certain things might discourage accepted students from going. I applied to schools on the coasts because I have this innate fear of being landlocked (lol j/k... but no, I like the fact that the state I'm in can break off and fall into the ocean 😀 ...j/k again..). ((Hah. What am I? A fish?))

Also, It was hard to find any online information on Tuskegee's CVMNAH or course curriculum, NAVLE passing rate (although many schools don't disclose this outright), or information besides the fact that Tuskegee prides itself on being very diverse. You'd have to really go out of your way to request extra and more relevant information (which I actually didn't) or do some fierce and mighty googling for outside articles hahaha. Also, from what I gather, it's not a very large school either. But hey. Tuskegee is fully accredited, regardless.

YES! Yes I did 🙂.

I'll be driving around the area instead of taking a taxi to my hotel, so maybe I'll get a better feel for the area as well. Hrmmmmm...
 
Hey Nissan, how'd it go? I'm sure I'm not the only one dying of curiousity 😀 I'm sure you did awesome, plus you've already got a couple of interviews under your belt by this point anyhow.
 
In a nutshell: I walked out of that interview feeling good 🙂. I think I was able to present myself the way I think I really am, so I have no regrets. It's now up to them to see if they like me, flaws and all.

The two interviewers were very relaxed and friendly and although I wouldn't say funny, per se, they definitely had a sense of humor. At no point did I feel like they found a glaring weakness in my application and played upon it, and at no point did I feel uncomfortable or pressured to tailor my answers to what they want. If they required further clarifications of my answers, I didn't feel like the didn't believe me or couldn't grasp what I was saying. The hour went by extremely fast, and I was smiling the whole time, and not out of force of habit or nervousness lol. There were definitely no awkward silences when they went onto the next questions because they really had good transitioning, which I didn't find with my Western interview at all.

My flight's about to leave, so I'll update more when I get back 🙂

I have been trying to find something about Tuskegee's curriculum but have not been able to find much except general info like two years pre-clinical and two years clinical. Also, does anyone know about wildlife or exotic opportunities at Tuskegee?

Nissan - any specific or difficult questions to help the rest of us interviewing? Thanks

Glad your interview went well! Very laid back huh?! The school itself is not top of the line, but as far as I am concerned, you get a good education! Hope to see you in the c/o 2014!
 
I'm so nervous about my interview.. I'll be in the area on Wednesday until Friday (play tourist) and then going horseback riding.. anyone from the AL/GA/TN area have any recommendations for a dude ranch/bnb?

@ImaJerseyGirl: Thanks!! I'm pretty sure I went into the interview around 9:15-30 and came out after 10:00. It went by really fast, in a good way 🙂.

@Rileydog: I'm not sure about exotics or wildlife, esp. since my interview didn't even remotely go that way, but from the students, it seems they do study abroad intern(extern?)ships during the summers in fields of their choosing. I didn't get the sense that those were official parts of the curriculum though. I wish I could be of more help regarding that. However, my interviewers told me that they have a very strong public health program, if that's your cup of tea.... But maybe they were biased because public health and pathology was the specialty of one of the interviewers. If you were interested in tracking though, TUSVM doesn't do it *shrug*.

As for specific or difficult questions, I really don't think any of them were particularly difficult. I'll be posting the interview feedback some time, but meanwhile, IMHO you're better off reading other non-behavioral questions from the schools already listed. Additionally, my interview went in the direction I wanted it to based on the info I was able to provide them, so it really depends on you, whether or not you present a tidbit that piques their interest, and whether or not you fully answer their initial question. I know this sounds trite/cliche/unhelpful, but I firmly believe the best way to prepare is to look over your own credentials and understand the reasons for what you disclosed in your app to begin with. And yes, it's open file.

@GACowgirl: Thank you 🙂. I saw the 100% NAVLE pass rate poster in one of the halls today. Tuskegee gets the job done hahaha. I hope to see you too!!

@IHeartGoldens: Good luck with your interview! I was definitely nervous up until I actually met the interviewers 🙂 Somehow things went well after getting over that initial bump lol.


Oh for anyone staying at Kellogg: Don't drink the sodas from the machine on the 2nd floor. I went to get a can of pepsi from the vending machine, and when the can fell from the machine, it was warm... like, warmer than the surrounding environment. Warm like someone was trying to hatch it. I took a sip and gagged because it tasted like carbonated water and nothing else. Upon closer inspection, I found out that the soda expired last October. Wtf.

non-behavioral? 😕😕 i thought it was mostly behavioral-type questions (what would you do if/why did you do__). I'm confused now.. 😕(for emphasis..lol)

From what I understand, behavioral-type questions focus more on what you definitely have done. They focus on how you behaved, past-tense, so you have to provide specific examples from your life. The other type of interview is more hypothetical, as in, "If you were a doctor and presented with X problem, how would you respond?" It's true, both interview formats want to know your behavior, but what I think behavioral questions specifically ask for past behavior instead of assumed future behavior.

Tuskegee is more of the latter. They never asked me questions that went "Give me an example of a time when you _____." I want to say they were more technical questions, but most of it was really hypothetical.

Are you flying to Atlanta, GA and then driving/shuttling it to Tuskegee or coming into Montgomery?

There are definite pros and cons for both schools. To be honest, Western's PBL system really intimidates me, but I know it's exactly the system that I need (and will definitely learn in), but for some reason I don't quite feel comfortable, just because it's so new to me. I have to really take a good look at myself to find out why I'm unsettled, if I'm given the chance to pick schools at all.

I feel more at ease with Tuskegee's teaching method, since it's what we've grown up with, but the area is really a downer, and some of the facilities look just ok, not completely impressive like it was in Western. I'd leave you to be the judge of that since I might be a bit biased when I first came to AL from my experience at Kellogg and my drive through the area. Tuskegee is definitely bigger, and for me, that's a plus.

I'm glad your interview went well. Hopefully you'll get into the school of your choice (once you figure out which one that is)

Did you find anything interesting to do down there outside of the tour/interview? I'll have plenty of time to get studying/assignments done during my hours and hours of travel time to and from there, so I really want to see the area or just do something at Tuskegee while I'm there.

I rented a car from Montgomery airport and drove down to Tuskegee.

Hmm... There's tons to do in Montgomery. Movies, lots of restaurants, gigantic stores... I'm sure there's more. But I don't know about Tuskegee 🙁. I didn't drive through its entirety, and maybe the part I drove through and around was the butt of the city/town, but from what I saw while I went on a food and university hunt, there isn't much... and that's pretty much the impression I got from all of the vet students there. Most of them live in Auburn and commute to Tuskegee, and those that live in Tuskegee are trying to move out. Check out Auburn, which is the apparently happening place that's apparently only half an hour from TU.

Anyone from Tuskegee who'd like to share some info? Am I mistaken?

Thanks for all the insight Nissan. I have also heard that you need to go to Auburn to go shopping or to eat in a restaurant that does not have fast food.

Flying into Atlanta tomorrow and driving to Tuskegee on Friday for Saturday interview. Hope to meet some of you and good luck :luck: on interviews!
 
Has anyone else already interviewed? It looks like most of us are on Saturday. Just curious if anyone else had opinions in addition to Nissan.
