Any one applied to this year for the class of 2016?
I applied to Tufts, University of Florida, Ross, and Tuskegee. I'm a first time applicant and a newbie to the student doctor network. Interested in hearing from anyone out there who applied to Tuskegee!🙂

Hey I just saw your post ! I applied to Tuskegee SVM last yr and I was accepted . However I chose WesternU because of the problem based learning. Tuskegee SVM is an awesome veterinary program and the program is really family oriented . The faculty pride themselves on educating minority students and promotng diversity. Sadly alot more of SDNers have applied to Tuskegee SVM and usually do not admit it ! If your are accpeted to this program you will be a good veterinarian with lots of good experiences. There surgery program is awesome because the students get alot of hands on experiences since there are no residents there to steal the student
thunder. They also have an internship program so stay hopeful and be encouraged! Go where you want and good luck and hit me up if you have any questions!?

Hey! That's awesome you got into Western. I thought about applying there but they were very expensive. Although vet school is definitely an investment, I didn't want to have too much of a heavy student loan to repay after graduation.

So about Tuskegee...I had a friend that graduated in May of 2011 and she is doing very well now practicing emergency medicine in Maryland. She said the tuition was reasonable but she had cabin fever living in Alabama. I visited the campus briefly and it seemed small but everyone was super friendly.

What can you tell me about the process? The application deadline was Oct 1st...so when do they start sending out rejections/acceptances/invitations for interviews etc?

I tried to access the online application to see my status or something but the website is down (I think).

One more question: Why would people be ashamed to mention they applied to Tuskegee?😕

Tuskegee usually is one of the last schools to send out acceptances, so I wouldn't expect to hear much from them for a few months, aside from a confirmation that your materials have been recieved or application is complete.

The website has a lot of issues. I would email or call if you want onfo on the status of your app.

And honestly, I don't think many people here apply to Tuskegee. No one is ashamed to admit anything - there just aren't that many. Over the years, we have had about four forum members that have chosen to attend there and have posted about it. They have all enjoyed it and have had great things to say. I just think that the location, the program's size, and the idea of being a minority have perhaps kept many applicants from considering it as an option. And the functionality of the website doesn't exactly inspire faith in the school... lol.

If you do some searches, you can find posts from attendees that talk about the pros and cons of the program and their overall experiences. Which are, as I said, all very positive.

I considered applying to Tuskegee but the fact that they needed all their LORs to be hand-written was a ridiculous request and made me decide against it (I had a hard enough time getting my evaluators to type up their letter in time for submission). One of the doctors I worked with went to Tuskegee for vet school and she was quite possibly the best doctor I've worked with. One of the nice things is that you use a lot of the same facilities as Auburn. Keep in mind how close Auburn is to Tuskegee if you end up deciding to go there since the area immediately surrounding Tuskegee is not exactly the safest place to live. I've been told that living closer to Auburn and commuting is the best plan.

Good luck! I hope you hear good things!

Well I attended Tuskegee university and I have to say the admission process is very different. I will encourage always checking your web link. I would discourage calling too much as there is one women who is the link to the applications and communication process and she becomes overwhelmed pretty fast . I was interviewed on 2/25/11 and I was accepted by I want to say march...? Do not quote me I will look for my letter just for you 😀 The answer to your question about why people do not want to admit that they apply to Tuskegee is just as puzzling to me. As I have classmates in my class now who have told me they applied to TUSVM when they found out I was a undergrad there . Also this is coming from personal expereince where some of those same classmates have told me they did not admit this to anyone else. Any way it is not a big deal many people on SDN apply to Tuskegee SVM and choose not to mention it for whatever reason who cares. I just want to assure you the program is awesome and if your accepted pack your things and go.😍 Also just as Tuskegee can be an unsafe place to live I have had many of my previous classmates who currenlty live in Auburn experience mishaps due to crime so do not let that deter you! Good luck and I promise to keep it real with you I lived in Tuskegee for 4 yrs and attended the university . I interned in the LA and SA teaching hopsital and as the progress goes on and your anxiety increases I could be your cheer leader. I still remember the fear of applying and waiting. Be encouraged and good luck !

To not apply because people are afraid of being considered a 'minority' is a little weird. I truly hope people don't feel that way. I think its a bit closed minded in this day an age afterall.

I don't think that idea is necessarily a matter of closed-mindedness. I work with student athletes at my school, (football players) and most of the ones I work with are black/African American (whichever term you prefer to use). Many are OOS students here, and most have mentioned at some point that they feel very uncomfortable and out of place because they are the minority. The student body (~45,000 students) here is mostly white/Asian/Indian (and only 41% women, btw). Some players leave and transfer to other schools because "there aren't enough black people"(these are the words of students I talked to about it). The school pushes for diversity, but if you look around on campus, the Asian students tend to hang out together, the Indian students hang out together...it's a comfort thing. A lot of people like to stick with what they know and are used to (this is also why a lot of people move back to the town they grew up in, I think).

The bottom line is that if you like the program and want to apply, who really cares what anyone else thinks?

I didn't say it was how I felt or that it was really justified - I just mentioned it as a factor. It WOULD be strange at first, wouldn't it - I'm sure most people here (statistically) are used to being in the majority and not the minority. It would be an adjustment.

Ultimately, I'm looking for the school that prepares me to be the best veterinarian that I can be. I'm not considered with being a minority/majority. I'm not sure about the rest of you guys but I grew up in a very multicultural family and neighborhood so I basically feel comfortable wherever I go. This type of adaptability is definitely going to serve me well when I start practicing vet med.

Thanks for the info about checking the website. This waiting process really is nerve wracking. Dare I say that Tuskegee is high on my list in terms of where i would ultimately like to go to school. I am a little concerned that the same reasons I am drawn to the school (i.e. small, sort of rural setting) might be the same reasons why I may end up not liking it. I hope there's opportunity for research etc. I plan on living in Auburn if I end up going to Tuskegee. If I have any queries I will definitely shoot you a message! Thanks for the encouragement 🙂

I totally agree! Actually, Tuskegee is one of the top schools I am considering applying to. Keep us all updated on your journey. I would love to hear all about it. Good luck 😀

I also applied to Tuskegee this cycle, under the encouragement of my advisor and a veterinarian alumni that I know. I have searched for information on the school but can't find much. Is there anyone out there that can shine some light on the school, maybe try to build up it's reputation on here. I know there seems to be a lot of TU haters and they don't need to reply, we all applied we know their process and website is a pain in the rear, but what are the positives of TU? How is the curriculum set up, 3 yrs course work and 1 clinic or 2 and 2? How much hands on experience does each student get there? For example on average how many surgeries has each graduate performed. I have heard that TU shares a lot of facilities with AU is this true? I applied to 3 schools this year and due to a lack of information TU is my last choice, can someone give me a reason to pick TU over the others? TU doesn't try to sell themselves very well, but that doesn't mean they're a bad school just needs help from their students.

TU is a 3+1 school. They do share a lot of facilities with AU. I couldn't quote surgery numbers for my own school, so I definitely have no idea on that, but I'm sure you graduate as a proficient surgeon (and extra opportunities for experience are always available depending on rotations, summer employment, etc.).

I can't really sell anything to you, but from what I've heard from those than have visited, it is a small school in a small town. The town isn't great - many choose to live in Auburn - but the faculty is very nice and excited to talk about their program.

I think your best bet would be to see if you get an interview and, if you do, go see it for yourself! You probably won't be disappointed.

I'm a current student at TUSVM and I love it... very family like atmosphere and highly regarded job wise once you graduate. If you have any questions let me know. Best of luck!

Tuskegee has actually done better with having a diverse acceptance rate...you'll see a mixture of black, white, and puerto rican population as well as a few others. They really strive to have a good even mix to mimic a real life working environment. Don't let applying to an HBCU (historically black college and university) deter you. Apply, interview and see for yourself!

Has anyone heard from TU yet about interviews. Got an email a few months back saying invites should be out late Dec. early Jan. I don't expect anything until the new semester starts but just wondered if anyone else knows anyting.

So I emailed one of the employees at the Admissions Office and they said that the new GRE really pushed everything back a bit students should be hearing back from them no later than the end of this month. You will receive notification via email that will prompt you to your online application to choose a date and time for your interview.

Hope that helps

Invitations for interviews will be sent out today everyone...so keep watch on your emails 🙂

Does anyone know anything about the SERP program they have during the summer?
I went to their webpage but it didn't have too much info 🙁

I'm curious how many people they accept into the program and how many spots they are competing for....

Serp takes about 6 or 7 ppl to fill the seats for the incoming class. The thing is you are competing with other students within the program for the seats.

I got my invitation for an interview Monday 🙂 Finally a positive in a long line of negatives!!

I wanted to ask those who have either interviewed there or now attend - what is the interview process like? How many people? How long? Interview type or a behavioral interview? Any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated!

I'm pretty excited and nervous about this!

Thanks!

Hey Everyone,
I just joined SDN and I have applied to TUSVM. I have an interview coming up and was wondering if you all have any advice. I was wondering if there are any current students that would like to share some of there favorite aspects of the school.
Thanks, and good luck to all

Yay!!! Hope to see you there!

Does anyone know the format for the interviews at tuskegee? (open vs close, one-on-one vs panel, etc)

This is all through the grape vine from last years applicants. It is open (they have their grades and application in front of them) and it is not a behavioral based interview. Again this was not found on their website, this is through current students at Tuskegee.

Does anyone know if TU has a informational seminar or anything for those interviewing, or is it just the interview and tour? I have heard that a lot of schools have things scheduled for like 4 hours(seminar, interview, tour, financial aid advisor, etc). When I last talked to them, they said there was a tour if I wanted to go on it. This sounded to me like all they care about is the interview and anything else is up to me. I would like to talk to someone in financial aid. Anyone been through it before that can give up some info?

So for those who interviewed...what did you think?

I was so stressed! Overall, everyone was very welcoming and supportive. My questions were pretty generic. I really enjoyed the tour afterwards. I just wish we didn't have to wait so long to get letters... What did you think??

It was great am everyone was so welcoming!! They are officially my top choice because I could totally see myself there 😀 Hope to see you in the fall! Who else are you waiting to hear from?

I'm on the alternate list for my IS. I'm also on the interview alternate list for one other school...

Hello Everyone I am also new here 🙂 I just had my interview at TU and it was great now I am just waiting to hear back from them.....I love how everyone is so polite and is family oriented....I enjoyed the first year students as well they were a great support and very welcoming!

I am new to SDN. I applied to Tuskegee because I did a large animal internship under one of their graduates. I interviewed last Friday and found everyone very welcoming and the questions were nothing I didn't expect. One of the first years said she didn't have to do the SERP program, but she wished she had because it really helps prepare you for the coursework apparently. I am apprehensive about living in such a small town and driving in from Auburn everyday especially at night. They assured me the town and campus were very safe, but highway 29 off of 85 btw Auburn and Tuskegee would be scary to drive on late at night. I am eager to hear back from Tuskegee. Maybe I will be there this fall🙂

Well I hope to be there in the fall and meet all those who are here and are accepted 🙂 I plan on living in auburn....not because I don't think it is safe but because there is nothing around the campus :/ and its only about 20 minute drive 🙂 I wish they could tell us now lol

I really want to know now! I too want to live in Auburn if accepted. Hope to meet all of you on the Fall 😀

Hello all!! I am a first year at TUSVM. I had the pleasure to meet some of you that had Friday interviews. I know a lot of people had interviews for SERP and feel really lost and confused. I did it this past summer so if I can answer any questions or calm any anxieties please feel free to ask away or message me. This goes for any of you guys, not just SERP people. GOOD LUCK to everyone!!!
