TUSPM vs. NYCPM Visit

Hello all,

I've recently visited TUSPM and after touring the campus, classrooms and facilities, I must say that I was pretty impressed. I had the opportunity to speak with faculty, but not as much with current students, though I've observed a few while they were with patients. One of my concerns as a prospective student, though, is housing in Philadelphia other than school dorms. Ideally, I'd prefer to live in a 1-bed, 1-bath apartment in a safe and comfortable area (i.e. NOT North Broad Street!).
Any advice from current/recently-admitted students as to where you live or will be living and what the area's like?

I visited only the campus of NYCPM and I'd definitely like to know where students live. `

You like TUSPM better than NYCPM? I wasn't very impressed with TUSPM but I really liked NYCPM though.

A good portion of NYCPM students live on the Upper East Side - safe, famous neighborhood of NYC. According to wikipedia, its the most affluent area of NYC. NYC is a grid of streets, in the south is the lower streets and up north is the higher number streets. So 14th street is south on the island, moving up you get to 59th street (starts the upper east side) to 96th street. From 96 north is Harlem, and the school is on 125.

96th street is a few subway stops away, about 5 minutes on the train. 86th street is one express subway stop away, about 5 minutes.

Students also live in Astoria, which is a bus stop away and is in Queens, not on the island. Students commute from New Jersey, which is about an hour away. Students commute from Connecticut, because Metro North is right next to the school, so any stop on the metro north is good. Students also live in Brooklyn, which is a longer train ride.

Temple is a great school. More than enough resources to take you as far as you want to go. Phila is an awesome city. It's grown on me a lot since I got here. I live outside of town 30 minutes on the r3. It's laid back, quiet, and I can get away from the city everyday. But there's many places to live that are right around the corner from the school. Tons of options, just do your homework.

One correction... NJ is not an hour away from East Harlem, unless you're commuting from Central Jersey, like Trenton (which i doubt anyone would). I live in Palisades Park, NJ... nice, safe, comfortable, affordable area, and it only takes me 10 minutes to Manhattan. Fort Lee would be a perfect place to live in NJ if you want to commute.. it's only about 5 minutes to Manhattan unless there's traffic.
