Hey guys, I'm looking for an apartment near UAB. Do you have any suggestions, good areas with a fairly short drive, or any areas to avoid? Any help is appreaciated.

Just drive around in Southside. Stick east of the Red Mountain expressway and in Five Points - west is not such a good neighborhood. There are a horde of places over the mountain in Homewood, and some people live as far as The Summit and the Galleria areas, where really nice places can be had, but with a headache of a drive. Other well known places are Aspen Run (aka The Ski Lodge) and a bank of apartments across from the new hospital (Southside Station & Carriage Court). Or you could live in one of the dorm apartments on campus.

If you're in this year, post your question on the Discus accepted student boards at http://discus.meis.uab.edu/discus.

Best of luck.

Yours,

I just secured an apartment next to Five Points. There's a management company called Kahn Properties (www.kahnproperties.com) that I think owns three buildings. It sounded like they were filling up fast, so you might want to move on this. Rent ranges from $500 for a small 1Br to $650 for a 2Br (I think).
