UBC 2008 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
yeah there definitely weren't 20-25 questions, after 5-7 questions they told me I was halfway through the interview, that caught me a little offguard, and a couple questions towards the end I definitely didn't expect, but overall I think I did a half decent job considering how nerveracking the whole think event was

WOW~ finally some who felt the same way as me x) now I know I'm not alone. I know what you mean about getting caught offguard. I think I got blown away by half of the questions. For some of them, I didn't even express that clearly nor do I think I answer them the way I like it. It really is a good thing that we'll find out in within a short week even if that still seems SO far away.

Hi, Folks,

Is there any possibility the result will come out on National Day(Jul 1?) Since the reminder they gave us after the interview tells us to check mail-box diligently ---especially emphasize on that holiday...😕

had my interview today at 10:30. Was anyone from SDN there in the circle of calm prior to the 10:30 interview?
Totally agree, the last question was a tough one. The "box" at the end... wasn't that to fill in your extra comments if you answered all your questions before time's up?

hey OGO, I missed you by like 5 mins. I arrived at the calming circle at around 10:35 and talked to a girl who said she just saw someone from Kelowna go in. Overall it wasn't too bad! My people were quite friendly and at the end they said I was very concise - must be a good thing right? Well fingers crossed.

registering for courses at UBCO in the chance that i don't get in, i noticed that ... UBCO doesn't offer ANY senior human anatomy or physiology courses. just BEAUTIFUL. lots of biochem for me.

but, of course, this is just for kicks, right; i'm getting into pharmacy.
😀

Yeah I was taken away at 10:20. I came back at 10:40 so you might have still been sitting in there when I came back in. I was in the blue shirt with a silvery tie if you saw me come in. I left pretty quickly though I had a friend waiting outside. Concise is good! But we'll all find out next week. My interview was pretty good. My spaces were all filled except for one question so I hope thats means something good!

hey guys
i just finished
sigh of relief.
I'm just glad it's over.
I think all of you need a break. you've worked hard for it.
Try not to stress over the results and don't think too much about it until the time comes. You can't change anything.
I'm going to go shopping 😀
Good Luck you guys and don't go crazzzzzy wait 😉

of course we can change things! we just have to... turn back time... and be better...

So does anyone know how the final rankings are compiled?

Is it:

50% grades
40% interview
10% other

?

as far as i know; that looks right to me
the 10% would be our extra curricular fun stuff, volunteer fun stuff, PCAT ...

I wonder if I met anyone on here yesterday? I showed up at around 10 to check in, but left for about an hour because my interview wasn't until 11:30, and then ended up being the last one from that timeslot to go in for the interview at around 11:45 haha.

I was there today at 3:00pm, everyone seemed so much older than me 🙁

My time slot was 3:30, but I got there around 3...so maybe I saw you, I am a bit older than most, but I hope I don't look that old!! 😉

Good luck everyone, thank goodness it's over!

now we wait =]

whoever gets email first better post ASAP! i hope all of us get in!

yeah good luck everyone! We should all be proud of how far we've gotten! Now let's just hope we've made it past that final barrier...

so how are we feeling about the interviews guys?!
they are all done now.
the wait is on

I apologize for my previous pessimistic messages! I was just too overwhelmed!

Time is passing by so slooooow. It's like staring each individual grain of sand falling in the hourglass. I really hope that we get the email on July 1st. An acceptance letter will be a nice Canada's Day gift and it'll be 2 celebrations in 1 day~ 😀

How did you guys find the interview?
I sometimes said stuff and kinda forgot what the questions was.......
lol
and some of my answers were quite long...🙁
but i finished in ~24mins, so that was ok

I think mine was 30-35 min. I didn't think I had a lot to say for each question, but enough. I wasn't prepared for about 3 or so questions so I took a few seconds to think of my answers for them. There was quite a bit of writing on my paper as well.

I have question to those who applied previously:

After when you did your interview, did you have a feeling that your performance wasn't good enough to get in? Or did you feel you had a good chance?

I ask this, because I don't want to get all excited and hopeful knowing that I did a decent job on my interview and then finding out next week that the admission committee did not choose me. Do you get what I mean?

As far as I know, grades are still weighted 50%. So even if you had a knockout interview but poor grades relative to others who made the interview shortlist, you could be in trouble.

Its better the expect the worse, then be surprised if you make it in. That way if you don't get in, you expected it .

Let's say I don't get in.. with a pcat score of 86 do you guys suggest I take it again? I'll be upgrading my GPA by taking the last of the pre reqs, not sure about the PCAT though. U of T is accepting pcat scores now too, you don't have to take their specialized test to get in now.

Also is it a good idea to take pharm electives during the year along with the pre reqs to get even more done and over with?

I was kinda thinking if I didn't get in I might retake the PCAT with a score of 85 but I'm not so sure now because at UBC I really don't see it being much of a deciding factor, especially for us who have made it to the interview stage. Taking a couple more pre-req courses is a good idea though!

I applied with a pcat score of 68 so that shows that they dont really care for it as long as you dont fail it. So.. with 85 i'm sure you'll be able to get another interview so wouldnt worry about spending another 100 bucks to re-write and risk getting a lower mark.

when i first wrote i recieved a 68. I later re-wrote and got an 88. Its totally worth doing the test twice. I found that I wasn't as stressed and was able to concentrate on the test alot more. I hope we all get in! We'd be pharm buds for the next 4 years! haha:laugh:

I've read up on the pharmacy web site and i just noticed that they changed this. It used to read 80% and then 89%. However they just changed it to incoperate lower numbers. Possibly there is a chance that people admitted this year had a lower average than previous years which is good news for us all!

Q: What are the competitive averages of past-admitted students?
A: The average grade for those admitted in has been approximately 78% - 80%, while the average PCAT composite percentile score has been between 85% and 90%.

Something else that they've changed recently is the amount of applicants in the "pool". It used to read 600 but now reads 500-600. Why are they choosing to suddenly incooperate all of this lower numbers? Maybe there wasn't a pool of 700 this year but on the lower side around 500.

Q: How many do you accept into First Year Pharmacy?</SPAN>
A: We admit approximately 150 students, chosen from a pool of between 500 and 600 applicants.

Is everyone getting excited? They said that interviewees are contacted within 10 days of the last interview. 1 day down 9 to go!!!!

For PCAT, unless you think you are really borderline for getting the interview, i don't think there's a point in retaking it either. Considering PCAT along with all the other things are only worth 10% post-interview, PCAT will be worth about 4% max, so an increase from 85 to even 100 would be like increasing by..< 1% in your overall score haha =P

As for prereqs, take it if you think it'll improve or not change your GPA. If you take a pharm prereq ontop of a large courseload from w/e other major, and you get a bad mark, then you risk getting a lower gpa which is worth a lot for admission =/

Hey, thanks for the input. my avg is only 76 so i don't think taking the 3rd year pre reqs will bring my avg down. Any other tips or suggestions for how to get in next year? I really feel that I have enough field experience, pcat is alright. stick to the gpa boost i guess?

GPA boost would give you the biggest effect, but I think practicing on your interview skills is the biggest deal breaker.

I can tell you the avg last year:
GPA: 79.8%
PCAT: 89 Percentile
Resume: 58 points?
Interview: 83%

For the resume, is that like 58 points out of 100?

I hope we find out by July 3rd because I was just offered a year long residence contract for the new Marine Drive Residence and they have given me up until the 3rd to accept it and pay the deposit.

heyyy. was anyone's interview on tuesday at 9?

hey I got into Marine Drive residence too. I got a shared appartment. The downpayment is 700 bucks! But it's refundable if you do not get admitted by UBC.

yeah, the problem is though is that I was accepted to the UBC Science program, but I only want to go to UBC if get accepted into Pharmacy. Maybe I should email them and ask if I can have an extension until I find out about Pharmacy.

Hmmm....I still don't have any idea where my interview stands...
I prepared for it, and it didn't go as well as I hoped but it wasn't that bad.
My gpa is only 75.6...so i'm getting anxious..:luck:

I have no idea how my interview went either...I certainly didn't bomb it, but I certainly didn't blow it out of the water either. In my case, I can say that the interview probably was not the strongest part of my application, but I don't think it was weak enough to ruin my chances, since my grades/PCAT are pretty solid (wishing that the PCAT was worth more post-interview). How I wish I had a more "specific" life!!!!

There's probably people here in the exact opposite situation, counting on the interview being the strongest part of their application to compensate for lower grades/PCAT.

Oh well, we'll find out soon enough. Happy long weekend to everyone 🙂

yeah i'm definitely hoping that my interview was the strongest part my application. anyhow i'm loaded out of my mind and gotta go to work in the morning at 10am and answer to stupid people that comes to the pharmacy. dammit i want to be a pharmacist already!!!!! yesterday i honestly had this stupid woman trying to phone in her own fricken triplicate prescription! who the **** does that!!!!! she's like.. how can i call it in and then its ready for me to pick up when i get there and then i give you my Rx. I'm like.. NOOOO ONLY DOCTORS CALL IN PRESCRIPTIONS!!! thats what i deal with at work! dammit tomorrow's gunna suck whilst being hung-the-****-over

lol, I don't know why people insist on calling in their own prescriptions, it will not make it go faster!!!!! for a triplicate no less!! Have fun at work tomorrow 😀

Wow, I am so nervous, I can't wait to get the results!!!! Like you UBCmicrobi, the interview was not the strongest part of my application..... I just hope that it was ok
🙂

In just ~5 days we're gonna get the results!!!
I'm so worried 😕 cause I have no clue how I did on my interview relative to others...
I hope the interviewers liked me!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the last two years.. they sent out the mail 6 days after the last interview.. so July 2nd is going to be the day most likely.

I sure hope so, I am getting pretty anxious, good or bad I just want to know!

hows everyone doing? July is inching up on all of us eh? I hope we hear ASAP. It would be amazing to get into pharmacy!👍

I was reading up on last years thread and the last person to find out found out on july 28th. They were obviously on the wait list but thats brutal! How could they make someone wait soo long!

Are you sure that person was not told that he/she was on the waitlist? I would imagine that person was informed that he/she was placed on the waitlist the same time everyone esle got the yes/no email. Then it took a couple weeks after for some people to decline their offer so that person could slip in from the waitlist.

O___O
But we have to register for our courses or decline our offers for specialization/major by the second week of July. That long waiting would definitely been brutal!!!

Please, somebody, invent the time machine to fast forward time!!!😛
