UBC Pharmacy 2017 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Awww :S..... I think (from reading previous year's threads), if you're either waitlisted or rejected, you can contact them to get your ranking! And good luck guys!!

legit? can you link me? I dont want to incur their wrath by asking them something they told us they couldnt tell us.

Does everyone who goes to U of T pharmacy graduate with a PharmD?

I think they just implemented it for this incoming year's class.

EDIT: I lied. I just Google'd it. Apparently you still have to go through a couple years of the BSc program then you can apply for a combined BSc and PharmD.

It's not over yet for the people on the waitlist, though! People may still decline their offer if they got into UofT or Waterloo or something. Many may opt to go there rather than UBC just for the entry PharmD. Hopefully those who are waiting won't wait too long. Stay strong, and good luck!

And if I was lucky enough to accepted to both schools I would DEFINITELY take the UofT offer #personalagenda

I heard you can only ask if you get rejected about your ranking, not waitlisted.

Aww really??? Ooooops sorry!! My bad :/ bad memory...

If you get waitlisted then rejected, you probably could.
But let's not go there.
Crossing my fingers for everyone on the waitlist!

(I could be totally wrong about the ranking thing though.)

Last year when rejected they said to wait a month or so and then email them for feedback. They just sent you back your GPA/PCAT info compared to the admitted class averages, and your interview ranking.

waitlisted....well its better than a rejection right? 🙂

From what I heard, you can only find out your overall ranking if you get a rejection email, and then inquire about your application further.

Also, I've got a question for anyone that went to UBC Okanagan (or knows the answer):

Will MICB 228 from UBCO count as exemption from MICB 202 at UBC Van? I also e-mailed Jennifer about this but maybe someone here can give me a quicker answer.

No I think you're right! And for the UofT program, if students apply later on in the program, how is it that different from UBC? :/ Doesn't it take ~6 years to get a PharmD in UBC? Although, of course, they only accept ~20 students a year... so it's pretty much impossible to get in I guess. Where would people with PharmD's usually work?

i tried asking them about my ranking last year, but they wouldn't tell me because i wasn't even invited to the interview. i was still rejected nonetheless, just not after the interview (before - which is even worst). maybe they didn't have the heart to tell me that i was ranked like, for example, 500 something out of 600 applicants. though, i could probably take it, not well, but still take it.
i don't know what i'm trying to say here, but i guess i mean like.. there are top ranked applicants, and there are also bottom ranked applicants (and people in between). it's just that most people try to think positive (which is good - thinking positive is good).

enough of my worthless rant, i wish the best to all of you on the waitlist.

i took micb 228 last year and emailed jennifer about it, and it counts as an exemption from micb 202 in van 🙂

@tomc19: think I know where you're coming from. It's unfortunate that they didn't send you a ranking the first time around. You would figure that's when you would need it the most, cause you might want to prioritize on certain aspects of your application to improve on for next year.

I was reading it in a rush so I could be wrong about the PharmD program too, haha.
But if you have a PharmD, you're qualified to work in the States as well. I know we won't be able to work in the States with just a BSc, we'd also need a PharmD.

Anyone who's graduating in 2015 and onwards will get the new pharmD degree in UT.

Awesome. Thank you for the answer!

I think UBC will eventually follow UofT's example soon and move to the PharmD system... perhaps even while we're in school. If that happens, it may be easier to get a PharmD if we desire it than how it currently is now (i.e. very difficult). I'm hoping, at least. 😛

When I went for my interview, someone actually asked if UBC is switching to the PharmD program and the representative said yes, but we would have known about it before we applied if we would be eligible for it.. so I'm guessing it'll be implemented after us.. 🙁

Hi everyone ,
I have been following this thread for past couple of days but did not post anything as i was anxiously waiting to hear from UBC. And unfortunately i got a rejection email today and i am hugely disappointed because i cant figure out what went wrong i had like high GPA 4.2 and Pcat 94 and i think i did pretty good on interview as well . Just did not had much for the volunteer and e.c ' s part. Are the EC 's so important ? Those who got accepted can you please share your gpa and pcat and other things you had on your application so i can improve my chances for next year. This was my first attempt so want to go strong next time .

Not until 2016, so we won't ever be eligible for E2P PharmD but we can do PG PharmD (very competitive as it's still considered to be a research degree) or perhaps a NT PharmD (not sure what that is yet).

Those are pretty useful links, alternity! Thanks for posting them.

I'm wondering what this NT PharmD is too. According to the matrix chart, the first grads for it might be in 2017 (possibly, it has a ? by it).

Hi guys quick question. I read that CAPS 301 needs to have chem 233 as a pre-req? Does anyone know if i can take both of it at the same time as CAPS 301 is all year around?

For Pharmacy students they should be co-requisites, so yes.

so I got waitlisted, does anyone know how long it will take until we hear back?

EC's shouldnt be that important, i think most people just tried to "fill out" the boxes just so they werent empty. A 4.2 GPA based on pharmacy UBC pre-reqs is pretty competitive, not sure how that stands if you applied from another school. Probably the interview that got you :S
Just scroll back to page 10/11 for grades/pcat/ect, alot of people posted that info

GPA - 3.65 on 4.33 scale, graduated with Bachelor of Science Honours
Pcat - 94
E.C. - job-shadowed with Pharmacist, SPCA, One to One Reading, Peer Mentor, 2 yrs of research experience (but not related to Pharmacy), student rep. on research committee, full course load but still held 1-3 jobs in customer service industry throughout school

I really did not try hard during my first couple years of school, and had serious doubts about ever getting accepted to Pharmacy. However, I decided not to give up without even trying, and hoped that my more recent accomplishments would show the true me. I was thinking it may take a couple attempts to get accepted, but I received my acceptance email last Thursday! I believe the interview is what really put me ahead. I am not the most outgoing person, but my work experience in customer service has taught me how to talk to people and be a leader/teacher. Plus, in preparing for the interview, I mostly focused on studying medical and pharmacy ethics which greatly helped answer the questions. I don't know what year you are in (if it is only first or second, they might just want to see how motivated you are for the profession, and that you apply again next year), but my advice to you is to keep trying, and focus more on preparation for the interview next time. Challenge yourself to do presentations, etc... to improve your public speaking and try to think about what they are looking for in an applicant with each question. Your GPA and PCAT scores are great, so I wouldn't get too down on yourself. You will get in if you just keep trying 🙂

And to all the people on the waitlist, you will be happy to hear I am rejecting my offer to go to U of Waterloo instead. Good luck!

So nobody got accepted today? Just waitlist or rejection?

I wonder how many invites were sent out today. looks like no posts about acceptance today..?!😕😕

Received my email today! 😀 Here are my stats:
GPA: 84
PCAT: 89
EC: hospital and pharmacy volunteering
MMI: okay to good in 6/9 stations

Best of luck to those in the waitlist and I can't wait to see you all in September!

So it looks like there was acceptance letters sent out today. Congrats dude!

Haha, I feel like they sent out all 224 last Thursday and just waiting to see how many rejected the initial offer.

Your PCAT and GPA were certainly competitive enough, and I don't think lack of ECs is necessarily a big drawback. But it's always a plus to have at least a couple of things that demonstrate involvement within the community.

Here's a little something I threw together for people to gauge themselves against interviewed applicants:
Code:

Data collected was freely accessible in this thread.
Please note that the sample size is extremely small,
and there is a heavy bias towards accepted applicants stats
(as they are probably more willing to share).

Also, keep in mind:
UBC Pharmacy FAQs said:
What weight will be applied to each of the admission requirements?
At least 50% of the Admission Index will be determined from grades of prerequisite and other relevant courses. The balance is comprised of the Online Pharmacy Application materials, the PCAT scores, and the Interview Score...

It's difficult to say for sure, but it looks like your interview might have been a weak point. Honestly, it's really hard to tell how well you come across in interviews. I've had friends who thought that they nailed it and it turned out poorly. I personally thought I screwed up, but still got an offer. In a month, you can request your interview ranking and know for certain.

I think NT PharmD means non-traditional PharmD program. I read somewhere that it's like an "upgrading program" for BPharm graduates to get their PharmD degree. 🙂

I forgot to post my stats. I got in last week.

GPA: 73-74%
PCAT: 85
EC's: Nothing pharmacy related. Volunteered in a lab and currently work in one. Cashier job. Dancing and art.

Interview: I felt I did well on 7/9 stations. Cracked some jokes with the last interviewer.

I'm don't think this matters (in fact I'm pretty sure it doesn't), but I also sent a thank-you letter after the interview.

Really?!
I was looking through some jobs in the states and they all require PharmD's..
But I guess there's always exceptions..
I would assume it'd be easier to land a job with a PharmD but not impossible with a BPharm..

Same here, I got accepted last week and forgot to post my stats.

GPA: 75%
PCAT: 80%
EC's: No pharmacy related activities, but ive been working at a piano studio for 3 years and have done a lot of volunteering activities and leadership actvities for highschool and around my community.

Interview: I thought i did quite well. None of the stations particularly stumped me. If i were to redo my interview, I would have answered everything the exact same.

Good luck to everyone whos still paitently awaiting their admisison

Not sure if it's been posted yet, but the Faculty had a townhall meeting going into a bit more detail on the PharmD program (see attached for some quick minutes)

anybody know how long it took last year for people on waitlist to get in if they did?

anybody know how long it took last year for people on waitlist to get in if they did?
I creeped last year's thread and it took ~7 days for most people to get off the waitlist.
Most were put on the waitlist June 29-June 30th and got an offer on July 6th, so about a week!

Hi everyone ,
I have been following this thread for past couple of days but did not post anything as i was anxiously waiting to hear from UBC. Your GPA and PCAT score is way above the average needed for admission. I heard from people that once you get an interview, it is all that matters (maybe GPA/PCAT used as a tiebreaker). As long as you meet the standard, they want a well-rounded individual (judged by interviews). So chances are, your interviews didn't go as well as you thought. I think the only way to improve (seeing that your GPA and PCAT are well above needed) is to practice MMI questions with a friend who will give honest feedback. Other than that, you look pretty set on getting in! So good luck next time mate, I'm sure you'll do great.

I've heard that rumor too about the interview, but I doubt it's true. It would seem strange to have all students entering the interview to start off on a completely clean slate and be ranked according to that.
Instead, I think points are assigned for every section; GPA, pcat, ec, interview, then all these points are added and applicants ranked. Though after the interview, I believe pcat plays a smaller significance in ranking, as now the interview would be more of importance.
Good luck to all of you guys on the waiting list, last year many students on the waiting list were accepted so don't lose hope

The requirement is 5 years of education leading to a pharmacy degree, which the BSc fulfills. You have to do a foreign equivalency exam among other things.

are there any chances that rejected people will get on the waitlist?

are there any chances that rejected people will get on the waitlist?

It happened last year, so I wouldn't rule it out. But I would imagine the are better prepared for it this year.

are there any chances that rejected people will get on the waitlist?
Apparently they got through the waitlist and made offers to people who were rejected last year, but I think they took a different approach this time to make sure that doesn't happen again 🙁

Last year they sent everything out on the same day, and apparently got more declined offers than they expected. This year there were 5 days between the first offers sent out and the waitlist emails, so I'm guessing there were already more than 224 offers sent out.

are there any chances that rejected people will get on the waitlist?

I would view it as a rejection and try harder next time (re-take PCAT, prepare furthur for the interview, get more experience). And if they do decide to accept you, view that as a pleasant surprise. Remember that they ranked you, so even if they decide to accept some rejected applicants, they will select the more qualified ones first.

I'm quoting from a some previous page:
Ever since UBC Pharmacy expanded their class size from 150 to 224, it has been much easier to get into the program (~600 apply every year). In the past, if your average was in the 70s, you did not have a chance at all to be able to get into UBC's Pharmacy Program. UBC Pharmacy has gotten less competitive these past few years. UofT has a new entry-level Pharm D. program. Ever since that started, many students have rejected UBC Pharmacy to go to U of T.
So even if you have a GPA of around 70% and a mediocre PCAT score, as long as you do okay on the interview, you will get in. Last year, UBC Pharmacy had to contact students who were rejected from UBC Pharmacy (not even waitlisted) to come back since UBC exhausted their waitlist. Don't worry about the stats that you have - as long as you do a decent job on the interview, you'll get in.

Has anyone called in for any information regarding the waitlist (chances of getting accepted, etc.)? I'm on the waitlist and I really have my fingers crossed 🙁
