UBC Pharmacy 2017 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Excited to meet everyone in September!

Here are my stats for those interested...

GPA: first year - 71ish, overall (bachelors degree) ~77
PCAT: 92
EC: lots of sports, couple hundred hours volunteering over the years (nothing pharmacy/medical related), couple years overseas teaching English

I phoned pharmacy and what they said was that round 1 was sent to the "majority" of students and that the second round will be sent next Tuesday (more likely) or Wednesday (less likely)

Out of curiosity, when is the deadline accepting or declining the offer?

Out of curiosity, when is the deadline accepting or declining the offer?

The email didn't say anything for a deadline for acceptances/rejections, just to reply back immediately if you reject the offer.

Thank you NutNut, I'm getting the vibe that most of the remaining people's chances depends on how many people reject the offer.

Wow been lurking this forum all week! hahaha

Got accepted! 🙂

GPA 86%
PCAT 93%

Just wondering, is anyone else here a first year student that applied to Pharmacy and got in? Out of curiosity, can people post their prior education (first year, third year, already has a degree etc)? I just want to grasp the demographics of our 2017 class.

Congrats to all those who were offered admission and good luck to those still waiting! 🙂

Haha, I'm not going to post my GPA and all that jazz but I will say that I just finished 2nd year at UBC.

YAY I GOT IN TOO! 😀 I literally screamed and jumped up and down for about 5 minutes in the doorway, since I just got home and finally checked my email.

Pre-req GPA: 83%

ECs: nothing too impressive... hospital volunteering, piano teacher (have my diplomas, typical Asian ;p), nothing pharmacy-related

Just finished 1st year! I'm excited to meet all of you in September! Good luck to everyone still waiting! It's only round 1 right? Plus, I think there are a bunch of people who will reject the offer to go to U of T instead 🙂

Let me just take a second to congratulate all of you that have received your letter's of acceptance. I was on these forums not too long ago and remember the stress that the application process entails.

For those of you still waiting, be patient, your letters will soon be sent out.

A big big  for UBC's PHARMACY CLASS OF 2017.

Make sure to enjoy your summer and I'm sure we might run into each other sometime within the next 4 years 😛

I got accepted, but I am a bit worried about the career prospects though. I was reading through the web and there seem to be government cuts and stuff and also there is over saturation. Can some-one please explain this... thanks!

Just got an email from admissions. We can accept our offer to BSc Pharm on the SSC now 😀

Yes jobs will be very competitive if you want to work in or near urban cities like Vancouver and Toronto. This is also true for other healthcare professions like Dentistry and Medicine. However, there are more jobs as you move towards more rural areas.

As far as I know, if you want to work in healthcare and not worry about competition in urban cities then Nursing is your best bet.

I have not received such an e-mail.....
but I shall check SSC anyways.
:O

Edit: Nope, nothing. Don't see anything on SSC.. 🙁

I'm curious about this as well but it's hard to find any solid data on the web

Hm, weird. Nobody else got this yet? I got the e-mail at 6:44pm and was able to pay my $100 acceptance deposit right away on the SSC. Perhaps they're still processing other acceptees? The email told me we have until June 28th to pay, so maybe everyone else that was in Round 1 emails will get theirs this weekend.

@jinny31 I don't think they sent out any more offers of admission yet. This email I think is just for people that got accepted in Round 1 to pay their deposit down on the SSC. Round 2 is apparently gonna be early next week?

Was it an e-mail from the Pharmacy faculty or from UBC in general?

+1. If you want a job, there will be a job for you when you graduate. Where you will work cannot be guaranteed though, but can be improved depending on your connections, your previous work experience and so forth.

At the end of the day, there are still pharmacies opening up on a monthly basis (even in Vancouver...) and thus it's hard to paint a picture of the pharmacy world as it appears four years down the road. Best to stay on the path and see where it takes us in some years time. No career path comes without risk.

It's a lot more complicated than simple "over-saturation". With our ever-growing population (and increased health knowledge), the demand for drugs will always be there. In fact, there's probably enough demand to accommodate almost all the new graduates. Of course, people are saying Pharmacy Technicians able to do most of what pharmacists can do at a lower salary, and are taking up a lot of the jobs that would've been for pharmacists a decade ago. That's true, but that's not the whole reason why the job outlook isn't so well.

In Canada, we run on a public health care model. This means the government subsidizes most of the prescription drugs we buy. Although you may not buy a lot of prescription drugs, people at an older age depend on so many of these drugs regularly, and it's a lot for the government to pay for. Now, moving along to the pharmacies itself. They make money by stocking generic brand name drugs (Simple example: Rexall's ibuprofen vs Advil). These generic companies will then give a rebate to the pharmacies once they sell it as an incentive (eg. 50%) over selling brand name drugs.

So what does the government do in this case to cut back on spendings? They cut a deal with drug companies and lower the price of generic brand name drugs, especially the common 6 that account for 1/5 of all drug sales (eg. amlodipine, atorvastatin, ramipril...). Now the government doesn't have to spend as much money on drugs (since they subsidize the amount that consumers pay). But how do they make it up to the drug companies? They then lower the rebate percentages (eg. down to 20%) so the drug companies don't lose as much money. So, everyone wins except for pharmacy owners. Because of this harsh decrease in revenue, small pharmacies are out competed by large ones like Shoppers Drug Mart. Large companies then don't see the benefits in opening another pharmacy as it will not generate as much revenue. This leads to staff cuts, work hour cuts, and halts the expansion of more pharmacies in the community.

Now, it sounds pretty bad, but the night is darkest before the dawn (yes I'm a batman fan). Pharmacy as a profession is evolving rapidly (see Blueprint for Pharmacy). Pharmacists are and will be given a much larger role in health care (physical assessments, medication reviews, immunizations, and limited prescribing rights) simply because dispensing drugs just doesn't cut it. So, good news is that the field is evolving very rapidly. Who knows, by the time we graduate, maybe the pharmacy as a profession will be completely different.

As of now, don't worry about it. No one can predict the future, and the present isn't necessarily a representation of the future. Do what you can, work hard, make connections, and learn about the field as much as you can. Start finding a part time job in large pharmacies like Shoppers and when you graduate you'll have a much higher chance of being hired as a pharmacist than other people.

Cheers!

I heard at my interview that a response is provide regardless of the outcome. I haven't received an notification perhaps due to alphabetical order of last names?

There's a second round of admissions next week, because there will be spots available from people who declined the offer to go to U of T (PharmD program).

yeah...thats what i thought. looks like most people received their offers.🙁

Yeah, I'm really starting to feel like it is as well. I contacted admissions yesterday and they said that more invites should be going out early next week to Wednesday. They said that they were sending out invites in waves, so I'm really hoping the first wave went out, and the second wave has yet to come.

If it's a waitlist then our likelyhood dramatically decreases of getting in.

I wonder how many invites they;ve sent out for first round.. this is really annoying..😕
did anyone receive rejection email?

I asked them both questions yesterday. They said they didn't know how many invites they sent out first round. But I checked the facebook page and there is like 150 students there, so at least that much is for sure. For the second question, no one received a rejection email.

EDIT: Just out of curiosity, how did you feel like your interview went? I felt like mine went pretty badly.
