hi---i have an interview at davis on 4/3 and i am not too familiar with davis and how far it is from sacramento. i was wondering if i have an interview at 9:15 am-- how long does it take to get there from davis??...is there a shuttle that runs back and forth b/c it says we need to provide our own transporation throughout the day?? is it a good idea to stay witha student host??? any help would be great!!! thanks!!1

Congrats on the interview, Nygirl. Here's what I remember from my vist.

There was a shuttle that runs back and forth between Davis and Sacto, maybe every half an hour. I didn't take it, nor did any of the other interviewees that day, but that was just cuz we had cars. Are you going to be flying there? It took about 20-25 mins. to drive without bad traffic in the afternoon, depending how much you like to speed. If I remember correctly, to make it on a shuttle, you have to leave around 45 minutes before the time you want to be there. Like, to get there at 2, you'd get on a 1:15 shuttle. Oh yeah, if you were driving to Sacto, which I don't think you are, you also have to worry about parking, so factor in another 10 mins. for that. They give you a permit to park in the big structure adjacent to the medical center, but the problem was that the structure was very very full as I looked for parking, and as a result, I was late and panicky for my interview. Luckily, the interviewer was late.

They didn't offer student hosts, but just a list of local motels around Davis and also around the medical center. I only investigated the motels around Davis.

If you have a 9:15 interview, it seems like you wouldn't have much time to spend at Davis. They have a welcome sessions at 8 am by the director of admissions, but you really could only stay for maybe 20 mins of that, depending on the shuttle schedule. You should probably call or email Terri Hall to ask her what she suggests. Maybe you can go straight to Sacramento in the morning, and after that, head over to Davis for your student interview at noon? You probably will miss the tour of the Davis campus too because of your interview schedue, but that's not a big deal.

the shuttle only leaves once an hour, so if you need to be there by 9:15, i'd take the 8ish shuttle, heres a link to the schedule, scroll down to see when it leaves lot 54. http://www.taps.ucdavis.edu/SHUTTLES.HTM#schedule

its about 25 minutes max drive, usually only about 20 mins, but it can be a bit tricky to get there. I've never had problems parking in the parking structure, but I'm usually there later at night. everything can be done without renting a car becuase there is a bus from the airport that drops you off on UCD's main campus and then the univeristy transit, UNITRANS, goes throughout pretty much the whole city.
Anyways if you haven't talked with Terri yet, I'm sure she'd have good advice because you can't be the first person to have a 9am interview. (I'm still trying to get ahold of her to even schedule my interview, aarrgh +pissed+ ) I would offer to help you out while you're in town, but I'll be out of the state, but most med students here are pretty nice so I don't see why they don't have a student host program. good luck.

they do have a student host program.
did you not get the info?
i'm still debating whether or not to stay witha student host.

Hey lola, thats cool they have the student hosts. Did they email you the info after you scheduled your interview day or they just tell you over the phone?

if you don't do the student host are you just going to drive up there in the morning, I still love the idea of being able to drive from home to an interview.

They do have a student host program. After you confirm the interview over the phone, you will get an email with a list of students who are willing to host. Then you need to email them or call them.
