Hi! I'm really sorry if this has been asked before but I've tried searching all over the site/internet for over an hour and can't find anything. I'm a California resident (but I'm a freshman at a college in Virginia), so for vet school I really want to apply to UC Davis. I'm setting up my schedule for next semester and have been trying to look at the Davis prerequisites and I am so confused. This is what the Davis site is saying I need:

Course requirements and quarter hours
General chemistry (with laboratory) 15 Organic chemistry (with laboratory) 6 Physics 6 General biology (with laboratory) 14 Systemic physiology* 5 Biochemistry* (bioenergetics and metabolism) 5 Genetics* 4 English composition and additional English 12 Humanities and social sciences 12 Statistics 4
* Upper-division courses equivalent to one semester or one quarter—labs not required.

Note: equivalent courses may vary in units and may also require other prerequisites. All lower division courses are full year courses on the semester system."

My school runs on a semester system and right now I am so confused by what any of this means and I tried asking my friend who is an undergrad at Davis and she didn't really know either. How does this translate into semesters? I'm taking 4 (or 5?) classes right now and each are 3 credits, except for my bio lab which is 1 credit. Do I really need to take more than a year of general chemistry? My school doesn't even offer that many classes general chem, so I'm really confused how I'd do that.

If you know anything about any of this I'd really appreciate it! Thank you so much!

Generally, 1 semester credit = 1.5 quarter credits. So, if you need 12 quarter credits of English, say, you need 8 semester credits of English.

For the General courses, I was told by the Davis admissions people that your school's one-year sequence will almost certainly be fine. For the upper-devision classes, you'll probably need to take a one-semester class.

My advice to you right now is to focus on getting your intro sciences done and taking some classes outside the sciences that interest you. Next year, sometime before you register for next fall's classes, contact the Davis admissions department and ask them about specific classes. I wouldn't ask them right now, because not only are they in the thick of going through applications, they just changed their admissions requirements and so everything is a bit confusing right now. After this admissions cycle, the website will get updated, they will post a Guide for Prospective Students, and they will be able to answer your questions more accurately.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Okay thank you! That helped a lot. I guess I'll email them next year since I'm still confused how I can take multiple semesters in general chemistry when my school only offers one semester of it and no other 100 level chem classes and only organic chem and biochem after that (but both of those you can take for two semesters). I'm guessing for getting more than one semester of biology I can just take other courses in biology it's just the chem that's confusing me since pretty much the only chem classes are general chem, organic chem, and biochem.

hmm, this is definitely something that you would want to discuss with UC Davis (after the craziness of the application period).
Fulfilling the requirements worked out well for me, because my school's general chem series was two semesters long (chem1a and chem1b), and the bio series required for my biology degree also fit with the time frame of the requirements.
