Where is the love? Got the rejection from UCD today.
I've been a UCD groupie for the last 10 years now (went there for undergrad, still working there a few years after grad), so I'm disappointed that I've been rejected.
I thought I had done all the right things, prepared the best app I could with what I had to work with, blah, blah, blah, but the bottom line is that the situation behind each rejection is different.
For a long time, I've been trying to figure out the admission process, trying to overanalyse why some people got rejections, other secondaries, still others interviews, and even though it doesn't make sense to us, there's some kind of justifiable reason for their decision.
Here's what I know about UCD admissions--just let this swim awhile in your head before you immediately reject/criticise/disagree...
UCD, as all other competitive UC schools, is looking for people who make the grade. Subpar GPAs can be supplemented by a decent MCAT and bad MCATs can be explained within the context of a good GPA. The numbers game usually isn't the best way to figure out your chances at Davis. Here's what can make or break most people in the first round of screens for secondaries: the personal statment. Even though the school is busy and there are many applicants, etc, etc, a good personal statment is something that can initially set you apart and get you a secondary even if your GPA or MCAT are nothing spectacular.
What's the other factor: ECs. Anyone who's heard Ed Dagang over in admissions give his talk on campus (or e-mailed him or spoken with him in person) knows that there are certain things that everyone will have done. Everyone will have hospital experiences, such as volunteering in an ER or somesuch interny thing to do. These are given and the red flag comes when there isn't anything simply because they ask themselves if you even know what you're getting into without them. What sets you apart is when you've got something spectacular. I was at a talk where someone asked Ed what kinds of things are 'unique' and he wouldn't say simply because he didn't want everyone to go out and do that particular thing. At the EC part of the process, they'll be looking for not just hospital stuff, but something that they can distinguish you from everyone else. They want to be able to say "oh yeah, that's the guy/gal that did XXX (enter Olympic athlete, opened a clinic, went abroad, etc). I know this is cheesy and unrealistic to think that somehow everyone will have this golden nugget of an activity, but its what makes the difference for lots of us "on the border" folks.
After talking with some of the people throughout the years at UCDSOM, it boils down to this: if you're not a complete package (ECs, LORs, numbers) AND you haven't convinced someone on paper that you're worth interviewing/having in the entering class...you end up on this thread and either try again or go somewhere else.
Yes, yes, I know most of this isn't earthshatteringly new information for anyone, but you also know that its a pretty arbitrary process at some schools that are numbers driven. I suppose I just wanted to make everyone feel better that if you've been rejected from UCD it doesn't mean you're a reject or that you wouldn't hack it at Davis...it just means Davis probably isn't the right place for you.
That being said, I'm still sad I wasn't superhuman enough to get into Davis.
