Luckily I didn't get the 'astrological' question, but I did get the question about conflict resolution which kind of threw me off. I really wasn't expecting any behavioral questions.

I got that one, too. I think I may have rambled...but at least I had an answer unlike the "huh?!" look I gave them for the 'astrological' question. Oh well, it's over...now all I can do is obsess about it and wait 🙂
 
Argh...speaking of obsessing, I'm thinking about the EIA and coggins questions they asked me. There was a series (by the hard to impress guy) and the last one was "What is anemia?" Which kinda threw me. I was wondering if there was a difference between the anemia I'm familiar with (iron deficiency) and EIA anemia. But I didn't know, so I said anemia is a depletion of iron in the blood and other body stores. I knew it had to do with hemoglobin, but the iron thing jumped to mind first. And now after looking up EIA more, I see that the anemia is caused by the virus causing the horse's body to attack its own red blood cells. NOT the same as the iron-related anemia I am familiar with. Ack! Now I'm worried that they're going to think I'm an idiot. Of course, I never claimed to be a horse expert. I'm not even primarily interested in horses. I've ridden for a while and helped out around the stables, which is great, but not the same.

Ok, sorry for the public panic. I'm just bummed that I didn't say the right thing. Kinda close (and maybe technically ok because he didn't say "tell me about the anemia caused by EIA" but still...) [/obsessing]
 
I wouldn't worry about it. They don't expect you to be an expert on horse diseases, I'm sure they were just looking at your thought pattern- which sounds fine. Good luck!
 
When are they supposed to send out acceptances for DVM applicants? I'm eager to hear what happens for everyone!!!!!

I know the thread is well past this by now, but I just had to comment, for people who haven't interviewed yet... If you're feeling *really* cocky and you get somebody like this, you could call him on it. We've got this "doctoring" class which is mostly about communication skills in the freshman year, and they get really insistent on good nonverbal communication - to the point of one of the profs telling us how offensive it is to fall asleep or read our e-mail in class and that he'd rather we leave than not pay full attention. (As a one-time teacher I tend to agree, but the fact that they emphasize it so much makes it all the funnier that they've got Dr. Bored interviewing you.)

So you could just pipe up with "I'm sorry, but I'm just noticing that you're exhibiting some really negative nonverbal communication... are you all right, or is something distracting you?" :meanie:

Of course it would really only be funny if they get that you're making a reference to the class.

Ha!! Kudos to anyone who has the cojones to do this. I would not have. He was a somewhat intimidating (off-putting?) individual. Now, if I knew him and was somewhat chummy (even if he was my prof) I would certainly do something like that (and have in the past). 🙂 But with so much riding on these interviews...that could be a tricky one to pull off. It's fun to imagine doing it, though. And I'm sure will be an even more enticing visual if I don't get in. 😛 (Though I'm hoping I do!)
 
Hey Kate_G - when do you start having hands-on animal doctoring experiences in the curriculum? I wasn't too clear about that when I was out there. I know there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer, foal team, work as a tech, etc, but when is it written in formally?

If I go, I'll be DVM/PhD, which means that if animal work doesn't start until 3rd year, god forbid, I'll not be touching an animal in a professional context until 5 years from now!!!!!!!!!

Kate, that would be really funny...especially if it's the adcom member who I think it is......

Hoodle, we have group "animal handling" labs Fall quarter, equine, lab animal, small, and food, and then also evening nursing sessions for small, equine, food and exotics throughout the year. In fact, I had my last exotics rotation tonight and I have my small animal nursing in a half hour which is why I'm sitting here reading the forum rather than doing anything more productive. The nursing sessions can be exciting or totally boring depending on what's in the hospital or what comes in while you're on. Otherwise, you're best bet for animal stuff is on-call shifts for foal team, colic team or calf team if you're LA, or feral cat clinics and Mercer if you're small animal. A great opportunity comes during the summer when you can participate in summer clinics at the VMTH where you're the student on the case, responsible for patients, writing records, etc.
 
Does anyone understand how/if WICHE status affects positions available at Davis? It seems as though being a WICHE applicant doesn't mean anything and is equal in treatment to other OOS in regards spots and tuition...
 
Also, what are the tracks offered by Davis? I couldn't find a description - just that there were 8 (even though this thread comments that there are 9)

The first day of the first quarter, at least for a portion of the class. We have a "clinical skills" course that includes several lab sessions where they teach you restraint/handling for horses, cows, goats, sheep, dogs, cats, exotics (mostly demo) and various lab species (rats, mice, hamsters, ferrets, rabbits) *and* several "nursing" sessions where you help a tech with their evening treatment duties in the small animal, equine, and food animal services. The sessions are done in small groups or individually, so they're spread throughout the whole first year. A friend of mine started her exotics session the very first day of classes. There are also real-animal labs for some classes, like radiology where you take radiographs on real live animals, and an ascultation lab for our cardio physiology course, which was pretty cool. Mind you, it's not a *lot* of hands-on time. But they do get you into it right from the beginning. Plus we just watched a horse run on the exercise lab's treadmill today, which was not in the least hands-on but still way cool. A horse at full gallop is somehow very different when you're standing next to it rather than riding it. 🙂

I believe there are 8 species-specific tracks and a 9th "individual" track. So far I've seen the individual track referred to as the track people take when they're doing the VSTP or are interested in research as a field, or perhaps zoo/wildlife folks. You need to get special approval to do the individual track, but I'm not sure how involved that is, etc. I can't remember all 8 species specific tracks, but as hoodle mentioned, there's usual, small, large, mixed, equine, and then there are combinations like small/equine and such, I think.

Hey Greenie53, I'm actually not WICHE - as a washington resident (with an in-state school) I didn't think it applied. Sorry! I have no idea how it works!
 
I wanted to let you guys know that last year sometime, I had saved onto my computer a copy of the UC-Davis 2005-2006 Curriculum Handbook, which I apparently dug up while trolling around. It has lots of detailed, detailed info about course offerings, tracking, etc! I couldn't find a more updated copy- everything about the curriculum online seems to be password protected. If anyone would like a copy of this (it's a super big PDF, about 70 pages) let me know, and I'll send it along! I could also post it on this site if people are interested.

I'm an employee of the vet school so I can access the password protected stuff (this year's curriculum, schedule, etc) if anyone has specific questions after reading last year's handbook.

Do you have access to the 2007-2008 version of the curriculum handbook that hoodle has from several years ago? That would be nice to look at, if available. Would just ensure that the info is up to date.

Unfortunately not in .pdf format, it's all dynamic content on the secure server.

There are a couple of isolated .pdf files about track requirements and recommended electives but none of them have any info about the actual courses, that's all dynamic content.
 
Who else is getting antsy? It's two weeks until we could start hearing from UC Davis!! I hope we all get good news!

I'm also just looking forward to all of the waiting being over... I've heard back from all of the other schools I applied to and Davis is the last. There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

(raises hand) Definitely antsy! I'm waffling between worrying about what Davis will say (there are big financial and personal implications for me if I go to IL as opposed to Davis), and worrying whether or not I can actually hack veterinary school now that I've been accepted.

Anyway, best of luck to everyone! Hopefully the next couple of weeks will go by quickly.
 
I had an interview today, and the receptionist said that they make decisions on the 19th. Their goal is to notify on the 20th, but that may not happen (resulting in a trickling of notices the next week.)
FWIW, this comes from the (very nice and helpful) greeter.
 
Ahh, I am going to be out of the country until the 21st! Do you know if they'll send out decisions via email or snail mail. I'm really hoping email because I won't be back at my mailing address until the 25th.

mine was in the AM, so we probably didn't meet. I went to the neuro lecture and MR/CT lab... so if you went to these 1st year classes, I was the only guy there in a suit🙂
I am so very glad that I was able to actually go to classes, I have complete and total faith in UCD now...

Some of the student hosts will let you tag along when they go to class. Unfortunately mine had an exam that day but I met up with her after my interview and chatted.
 
Oh ok- yeah, I didn't go to those classes, but I did go to a class on Mammary glands. The prof was kinda funny 🙂

FYI, last year the adcom finalized the class on Tuesday March 20 and the first acceptance emails were sent out Friday March 23rd. FWIW. 😀

Well, it seems like the interview invites went out a lot more smoothly this year than they did last year (all in one day) so maybe they've managed to refine their e-mail system a little bit.

Just called Davis. This guy said they would not be sending emails out until early April. I am not sure he really knows because then I informed him we were told we would begin hearing next week, and he said "Yes, they started making decisions yesterday." Anyone want to make a follow up call and bug them a bit more to get the scoop?

I think that's the same guy I talked to a few days ago who wasn't very helpful. I was trying to find out if we might start hearing today versus Monday/next week like they originally told us. He basically told me that he had no idea of timeline. 🙄 I really like UC Davis, but it'd be nice if they put someone with a clue on the phone lines. On the plus side, Kim and Yasmin are extremely nice, responsive, and knowledgable.

When I go get some lunch, I'll try calling and see if I have any luck.
 
Ok, I take back my previous comments. He's a very nice guy. He didn't know, but he went to check with others, and the answer appears to be that they will start sending out emails (rejections and acceptances) on Monday 24 March in no particular order. He said those emails should continue throughout the week. Here's hopin' they all arrive on Monday! 🙂
