UC Davis!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
but if i do, i will dress presentably as it will be my introduction to the people who are evaluating me.

You don't need to wear a suit to the workshop (and I wouldn't recommend it, as tours happen that afternoon). Business casual should be fine. Have fun!

I'll be at the workshop. I'm so freakin excited I cried when I got the email today. Sheltergirl, do you work at a local shelter? I'm at PHS in San mateo.

Hey! I used to volunteer at PHS, and used to work at HSSV (Santa Clara). Now I'm at a private hospital but they often do referrals for rescues and for my old shelter. Feel free to PM me if you like!

I know that it's too early to get anxious, but I haven't heard from UCD yet and I'm wondering if anyone else here is in the same boat.

From what people have said earlier in this thread, interview invites will be going out all week long, so I wouldn't get too worried about it. 🙂

Does anyone know how many OOSers were interviewed last year? I know from looking at admission statistics that 15 OOSers were accepted last year and 9 matriculated. But they don't say how many they interviewed. If anyone knows, I would much appreciate the information. Thanks!

I remember asking a first year this question last year when I interviewed, and she told me she thought 25-30 OOSers were invited to interview. I don't know how reliable of a number that is. Either way, congratulations! :luck:

Great, thanks for the info!

I'm IS, and I've heard zilch so far, so I'm in that boat! :scared:

Do anyone know if there is anywhere to store a small suitcase during the interview? My friend will be dropping me off at Davis for my interview and then I am catching the bus from there to the airport. I just realized that I'll have to have my bag with me during that time. Thoughts?

stupid double post

Every place I've been so far has been more than willing to stash a bag for you. If you're really worried, though, I'd call the admissions/dean's office ahead of time and ask about that.

Hang in there Catnapper (and other ISers waiting to hear)! The week is still young. We're all pulling for you!!

the student programs office would field that question. usually, schools will hold onto jackets, bags, etc. so that you don't have to lug them with you everywhere you go.

Thanks! But now the week's middle-aged (noon on Wed.), and still nada...🙁
I'm thinkin' this ain't good...but congrats to all you kids who got interviews! That's awesome!👍

Im in state also still no word. I just want to hear already!!!!

So it's looking like nobody here, apart from the interview invitees, has heard anything since Monday--is that right?😕

what an awesome school. i just visited, and... wow. their new teaching facilities are incredible!

Maybe they are just reloading their email canon to shoot off the next group of invites.... I hope.

yepp.. nothing here either for this ISer... :scared:

Thank you for posting feedback already! I don't know how applicable it will be for the rest of us but it's appreciated that you got it up so quickly. 🙂

You're welcome! except there was some kind of snafu - I had said I had about a 7 on the stress, but about a 10 on performance. It said that I put in 0 on stress, which is absolutely and totally wrong! How can you be unstressed when its you vs. 6/7 faculty members grilling you!

ya, microbiology. infectious disease, host-pathogen interactions, etc.

Another day another empty mailbox / inbox. 🙁

Holy cr@p, Hoodle - congratulations! :hardy::hardy:
You probably beat out people already in the vet med program to get that (and thanks for posting feedback too)!

Dustman and Adoggy07 - maybe you should call the admissions office tomorrow and find out what's going on? Maybe they're still sorting through things, who knows.

I just called the admissions office, & the guy there said that the majority of emails regarding interview invites would be going out today & early next week...a grain of hope, maybe??

I'll never understand why, if a school is using email, they don't wait until they have everyone's email ready to roll and then just run down the list copying, pasting, and hitting send. Don't they know they cause us so much agony this way?

Hang in there, Catnapper and others...we're all pulling for you!!:luck:

Amen, VAgirl, amen. And thanks!

yea this is a little bit silly...Ive been checkin my email religiously for the entire week!
:barf::barf:I'm not actually vomitting i just thought this was pretty sick....lol seriously though...its pretty ill....oh snap did it again!

Obviously getting funnier while I wait.

Do students at Davis ever commute from SF or is that just complete and utter insanity? Anyone know?
My next door neighbor here actually works in the Bay Area while living in Davis (so the reverse) and I know it is very taxing on her to have to do that.
Sorry I'm coming to the thread late, but I'm a Davis student now and I drive from the east bay every day. Two points to consider:

The traffic Nyanko's neighbor is driving in, from Davis to east bay/SF in the morning and east bay/SF to Davis in the evening, is *horriffic*. But there's actually not much traffic in the opposite directions. It takes an hour each way, but it's a really consistent and predictable hour.

However... you don't want to commute from SF to Davis, Karazy. Traffic within SF is bad, and you'll either have to cross two bridges or fight your way along a crowded little highway around the top of San Pablo Bay. Just pop up a map on Google and look at the difference between SF to Davis and the east bay (e.g. Oakland) to Davis and you'll see what I mean. (Actually, do it during the morning or evening commute hours and flip on the "traffic" setting!)

I assume your reason for asking is that SF is a way cooler place to live than Davis, and not that you have strong personal reasons (e.g. spouse with job) to need to do it. My advice is to live in Davis and visit SF on the weekends if you just want the atmosphere. If you do have a spouse situation, then I'd suggest a compromise of living in the east bay instead of SF (and if you'd like specific advice in that case, feel free to PM me).

Hey all, just wanted to add that I highly recommend going to the interview orientation/workshop if you can swing it. Even if it means a pretty long drive both that day and your interview day.

I know that I found the Davis admissions process pretty... cold. Not outright hostile, just not as warm-and-fuzzy as, say, Wisconsin or Penn. I mean, the staff deal with thousands of wannabe vet students, so you can hardly blame them. But frankly, that was my only impression of the whole program, and because of that I was really leaning *against* going to Davis at the time of the interview orientation.

It is *so* not like that.

The faculty show real concern for the students, the administration seems very responsive, and there are all sorts of support network type things - you'll have a faculty mentor, a second-year "big sib" to show you the ropes, and if you've gotten an interview invite then you might already have heard from your first-year "host" for the interview process. Even the admissions office folks are super-friendly once you've got that interview invite in your grubby little hands.

Maybe it's not a big deal for those of you who are already set on Davis as your first choice, but if you've got other interviews/acceptances and you're concerned as to whether Davis is for you, then I really suggest you try to make it to the orientation. I'll probably see you there! 🙂

EDIT: Business casual is fine (you'll need to put on shoe covers to walk through the barns on your tour, and it's embarrassing to try to do that in heels). Hell, you could wear jeans and sneakers and probably nobody would notice, but I'm not officially telling you that. And yes, you should be able to leave jackets/luggage/etc. in the lecture hall (where the rest of the workshop takes place) during your tour.

I'm reassured by what you have to say, KateG! I noticed similarly, though my interview was not the 'standard' interview (for vstp) - the school didn't have a lot of warm-and-fuzzies set up. they were relatively business-like. I'm reassured that you think that's because of high volume of applicants, etc, making admissions relatively stretched thin, but that once you're there it's friendly!

Thanks for posting that, Kate. I'm glad my interview is next Monday because it means I'll be able to go to the orientation day. I interviewed at Penn and was a sucker for the warm-and-fuzzy so have been concerned beacuse that is not the vibe I've gotten/heard about from Davis...but I also know that judging a school on admissions is not always a good idea! It'll be good for me to be able to see a little more of the school so I have some more information on which to make a (semi)-informed decision.

Anyone hear from Davis today? Anyone...anyone?😕

kate_g - thanks so much for the input! I really appreciate it. At this point I feel like I'm just sort of future tripping because really I just need to get into Davis first.... (stomach churn) *deep breath* Every time I even think about going to Davis I need to knock on wood - fast!

Thanks for the advice about the interviewee orientation as well. I hope to see you - and all you other SDNers - there. (I love how I feel like I already have friends 😉 )

Can anyone speak to the UC Davis tracking? I don't have any real feel for it except a bit on how it impacts 4th year clinics. Does it have any impact before then? Also, I'm interested in public health, but all they seem to have is "individual." And they make no mention of this being a possible public health route, but talk about exotics, zoo, wildlife, etc. Does anyone have any experience for how this would work?

Thanks so much!

They have the California Diagnostic Lab, which is HUGE deal, and TONS of research involved in public health. I'm not sure how the vet school curriculum itself is structured as far as that goes, but there's certainly all the expertise in the world. Last year, there was a class in vector-borne diseases; there are tons of classes in antimicrobials, disease and ecosystem monitoring, food safety, etc. Again I don't know how this tracks - I think if (when?) I go, I might end up being on a sort of large/production animal track, as that seems the most public health oriented, but I don't really know. Lots of summer opportunities at Tulare for exploring that kind of thing. Sorry I don't know more specifics 🙁 but I don't think you can go wrong academically there 😎

Can anyone speak to the UC Davis tracking?
Tracking really only applies to your third and fourth years. The first two years are pretty much the same for everyone (though there are lots of electives). The tracks are really broad, and allow a lot of room for your own interests (small animal is the most restrictive track, and even that one still has 10 weeks of do-whatever-you-want elective time in the 4th year).

VAgirl said:

You're right, there's no public health track (though this might have to change if that whole veterinary public health funding act goes through). But if you think about it, public health is a really broad field, which you can approach from a food/production animal standpoint, a companion animal standpoint, or a wildlife/ecosystem standpoint. So you'd pick the track to suit the approach you're interested in, and do electives and externship rotations with a public health focus. (BTW intro Epidemiology is a required course for *everyone* the first quarter of first year.)

Also I'm pretty sure there's a joint DVM/MPH program through the school of public health if you'd be interested in going that route - probably you're too late to put in an application for this coming year, but you could probably apply during your first year in the DVM program.

I called admissions (again) this morning, and it sounds like they're pretty well through sending out the interview invites (the woman said a few more may go out this week, but I get the sense that they avoid giving any definitive "you're finished!"'s over the phone), and that the IS rejections will be emailed this week. Sorry kids! It looks like those of us who haven't heard by now didn't make the cut! 🙁

Hi, I'm a lurker of SDN...
Got my rejection from Davis today.
Congrats to all that got interviews!

Sorry Emmyrocks! I should be gettin' my NO WAY JOSE from them any time, now...so I'll be joining your boat!🙁

I guess i am waiting for my rejection too. Kansas it is then. Good luck to everyone at the Davis interviews!

to be quite honest i have no idea what davis is thinking. I talked to admissions twice. this morning the woman said they are mostly done sending invitations for interviews but there are a few left and this week they'll send out rejection via email. This afternoon i called to try to get them to tell me more but the guy was saying they sent out all invitations, rejections go out today and there is some sort of waiting list procedure for interviews.

i think they are stringing applicants along knowingly and that sucks. i have classes that i am only taking for davis. id like to know if can drop those suckers and have a fantabulous time for the rest of the year or bust my *** off at two schools trying to get everything completed so i can stay in cali.

anyways. good luck all!

those of you going to ohio, plan on seeing me there!

Yeah, I've called there twice in the last week or so, and both times I got pretty equivocal responses, but just looking at the interviews thread, it looks like the bulk of their interview invites have already gone out, so good luck to you interviewees out there and for the rest of us: let's all hope-n-pray something else pans out!!
:luck::luck:

sigh..!

I called them too.. and the lady said that all of the invitations have gone out, so if you haven't received one, you will not be getting one (so she says). She said that they will be sending out rejections all throughout this week although some people may get something else? I guess some kind of wait list type thing? She really didn't specify... SAD! 🙁
