UC Irvine Alternate List 2007

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If we want to email Dr. Peterson are we supposed to just email the general admissions email? Or did she give us hers? I had my faculty interview during Dr. Peterson's talk on interview day so I didn't hear any information on how to contact her.

Thanks!

i emailed the regular admissions email but addressed it to her... and did the same with my snail mail. i'm not sure how effective that is, though, so if anyone emailed her directly, that would be very useful! if she clarified which address to send it to during her shpeal, i missed it 🙁

Thanks, this is what I was looking to find out! I'll just write to the general email.

Do they prefer to get both a copy of email and snail mail?

no idea. my two letters (and separate means of sending them) were completely separate. the really laid back atmosphere of uci tells me to only send one or the other... otherwise they might think you are too stalker/intense. who knows, though... maybe they'd admire your dedication and passion to the school if you sent both. yay for the mystery of never knowing how this process works 😀

Yeah I'm just going to shoot them an email. Both seems overkill. But again, I missed all the talk of what to do and who to send what to so I wanted to make sure I didn't miss something. One school I interviewed at did specify that you should send email + hardcopy.

i think email is the best bet. good luck... also, the one important thing she said during the shpeal was to make sure you have a letter of rec from all the major extracurriculars you did... otherwise the committee gets confused and apparently doesn't like you very much. so if your letters don't encompass everything you did, send in another one from the missing activity.

Thanks, yeah I took care of that.

No it still says alternate list. She said she was calling me on her way to the hospital. The number it came from was 949 area code, if that helps.

oh my gosh, congrats guys!!! sadly my phone has been dead quiet all day. this thread will be a lot different without you, angel!

Omg. The number was 949, and the internet (uci website) it says it's her number. But it's different from the one listed in her email. I'm crossing my fingers that it's good news, or that there is still news...they wouldn't retract something just because you didn't pick up right? My phone call was roughly when you got yours too.

I can't believe they would retract it just because you didn't answer. Just wait and see - she said she was on her way to the hospital and in a hurry so maybe she just decided she would wait to call you back later. Goodluck!!!

CONGRATULATIONS YOU GUYS! See you in the fall!! 😀

Woohoo I got a call from Dr. Peterson today! Looks like another last-day interviewer will be joining you guys. =)

Hey Everyone!!! I just finished packing for a cross country road trip (which I was planning to leave for in 2 days) this morning... at 4:30pm, when I was at the apple store yelling at people for my brand new macbook pro that is now broken, anger turned to THE BEST DAY EVER when Dr. Peterson called!! Every second of this year-long marathon was worth it for that 2 minute conversation.

Good luck to everyone waiting! It pays to keep them posted with updates. Don't lose hope, because you NEVER know what's going to happen with this process. 😀

Hey Guys,

When I went into pick up my packet, I talked to Gayle. She told me that there were 4 more spots open and that they knew the first three to get it, but still had to decide the last one. They decide whenever they have an opening, not in batches. They really do review the whole waitlist (minus the very bottom which she says "there is a reason why they are there"). I think it's amazing that 2 people off of SDN got in...either the people who check SDN are better applicants or more people check SDN than let on. Which ones do you guys think it is? And I don't know when she normally makes the calls...

Oh...and there is a very small chance of getting on campus housing since medical school students are no longer a priority! This came as a surprise to housing and to them.

And she said that there are people who update as well as those who didn't who get in off the waitlist. Don't know what it is that actually works...

The latest is that the San Juan Bautista School of Medicine in Puerto Rico has been granted accreditation by the LCME. There is still time to aplly for the remaining positions Ive been told...

Not sure why SDNers are having a good run with the UCI waitlist. It's pointless to try and figure out the "why" questions with this crazy process. Maybe it's because we're literally showing a strong investment in our future by keeping each other updated, which schools see in update letters as well?

When I spoke to the admissions office, though, they said it was my persistent updates as well as a letter of rec I sent in last week from a lab supervisor that talked about my work in the past year. I never sent in a letter of "intent" -- i.e. I never said I'd definitely go to UCI if accepted. But I did keep them updated with letters, emails, and/or calls over the past few months, and I really do think that helps (as long as you don't sound neurotic), so I'd recommend it to anyone still on the alternate list.

That Dr. Peterson called me on a Sunday afternoon on Father's Day goes to show they really care about their students at UC Irvine and will call you (and put you out of misery) as soon as they know something certain. 👍

Housing does seem like a pain, but my student interviewer said all people that actually wanted on-campus housing eventually got it.

Good luck everyone! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll all be classmates next year!!

The problem with the on-campus housing is that apparently last year med students got priority at VDC and this year they're not (someone on the facebook group said this). I'm sure a lot of people will get in, but I think a lot of us have given up on waiting.

still no word for me. I am starting to get worried. =(

They do accept people all the way up until August--have you talked to anyone in the office about your app or where you stand?

i talked to christine a couple weeks back and asked if i was in the "bottom pile" she said there is no defined bottom of the pile and it changes all the time and that there it is possible for me to get in as people in the past with similar stats got in. I have sent in 3 new lors and 2 more updates in the past 5 weeks. I dunno what gives =(. Does the waitlist move substantially after June? Should i write a letter to Dr. Peterson? I don't want to barrage them with emails and letters as I have already contacted them 5 fives in just five weeks. what is a person like me supposed to do??

I feel your frustration. Were you accepted elsewhere and just preferred Irvine?

yea i was accepted at a couple other places, but irvine is mytop choice

im thinking about personally goin in to talk to Gayle and Dr. Peterson as i live about 5 mins away. WHAT TO DO??

Just cross your fingers man--sounds like you've done everything you possibly could. At a certain point it's really out of your hands though. Talking to Gayle or Dr. Peterson couldn't hurt though. Best of luck 🙂.

That is a pretty strange response. I think they expect it will move in the end of July, because that will be the last wave of the snowball effect for all schools since most start early August. People will get off a waitlist somewhere else and a spot will open up at UCI. This very well might happen in the next few weeks though. Regardless, I say keep them updated no matter how much you've already done it. It's important to be professional and polite, but still be persistent. At least, that's what worked for me.

I have no idea how UCI manages the waitlist and ranks it but I really do think they look at everyone everytime a spot opens up. It was my persistence, not that I was at the top of a hidden waitlist, that convinced them to call me.

Good luck to everyone. She'll call when you're least expecting it =)

I got an e-mail response from UCI today regarding the waitlist:
"The waitlist will begin moving in mid-late July. We cannot release rankings or any other info to the public."

I'm so confused. What do they KNOW is going to happen in mid/late July that isn't happening now...and I thought they didn't even rank?!?!

I would say go for it. They're really nice in person. When I talked to Gayle, she mentioned they do review everyone again, but she also mentioned that there was a very "bottom"--but there was a reason people were there. If it's any consolation, I gave up my spot a few days ago.

any news lately?
here's hoping for good luck on 07/07/07:luck::luck::luck:

a few people in the facebook group have said they've gotten off the waitlist in the past few weeks, so there still seems to be a lot of movement. good luck!

Does anyone know about how many applicants, if any, get in this late in the game? Are there any spots open, or are we just hoping that current acceptances decline. I am still crossing my fingers to any hope that remains. :luck:👍
