Yay! did anyone else get the secondary invite from UCI? Is this a good sign for the other UC's, or are their standards comparable? I'm wondering if this means I can hope to hear from other UC's...?

I just got UCI's secondary invite this morning. This is the first screened secondary I have received so I was pretty excited. From what I know, UC Irvine is fairly selective so I would think getting a secondary from Irvine would mean that you have a high probability of getting secondaries from the other UC's. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

It must be computerized if they screen because I too got the reciept and secondary invite within 10 minutes from eachother.

I'm excited too! However I am away from home on a mac and the page is not showing properly on IE or Safari. Now I have to wait 'til later.

I much prefer Firefox as it shows stuff how it is really supposed to be while IE usually messes with it. The only thing I ever use IE is when it doesn't work in firefox (ie AMCAS) and to check websites I made are fine.

speaking of the uc irvine secondary did anyone notice that the third essay question asks you to clarify activities "since receiving your undergraduate degree."

What if we havent received an undergraduate degree yet? It doesnt seem to say optional anywhere so I am assuming I just talk about activites regardless of whether I have my degree yet or not.

Anyone know for sure?

Eh wtf? Same here...I have pretty good numbers...way higher than their average in both GPA and MCAT...maybe it's personal...maybe they don't like me...maybe no one likes me!

***At this time you have not been awarded a Seondary Application. Thank you for your patience!

That question is for people who've taken a year (or more) off since graduation. If you're aiming to start med school the fall after you graduate, I don't think you need to answer this one.

If i'm wrong, feel free to correct me.

Hope this helps and good luck!

They must take longer to send out rejections, I still haven't recieved anything from them and I'm an undergraduate here. 😡

lol TicAL, maybe they email it in batches b/c the outgoing server admins might just think it's spam and stop all emails.

I hope that's the case, otherwise I'd have to leave a flaming bag of dog crap outside of Dr. Peterson's office 😉 This has got me checking my email every 5 minutes, I've become everything I used to hate!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but out of the 5 UCs, UCI was the only one that sent me one last year. UC Davis thought about it until February 2nd, but then decided no. UCSF was definitely the quickest rejection, and had the best letter too. 😉

I've got a question about the application now that I've looked it over- what do you all make of the categories we are supposed to list our activities under?

School Activities (honor societies or what?)
Community Activities (do student clubs go under here?)

The other ones are pretty self-explanatory. Just wanted to see what other people are putting down. I have some random things, but I don't know where they would fit. I was a TA, member of some student groups, not much community involvement, so I'm wondering if I can use student groups under this, or community service that was general

Do they also screen out out of staters?

I think that school activities would include honors societies and clubs, and that community activities would include non-medically related volunteer and/or jobs you have held. That's what I was going to put down anyhow.

I'm sure that they do. And I wouldn't hold my breath for UCI if you're out of state, the MSAR says that in 2004 they only interviewed 3 out of staters and none matriculated.

Really though, why are you trying to get into a CA school as an out of stater? Unless you are in the top 2% or so of applicants, are URM, have a really strong tie to CA or are really in demand in some other way, forget it. Plus, we already have a shortage of spots here, we don't need residents from other states trying to steal our very few spots.

this may be a really stupid question but how are you guys formatting the dates in that little box for activities. I tried to do 07/2001-08/2004 but it wont fit. The only way i see it fitting is doing 07/01-08/04. Is that what you guys are doing? What if they mistake that for july 1 to aug 4.

I'd just do 07/01-08/04. I doubt they'd interpret it as July 1st to August 4th... also, remember, they do have your AMCAS, so that would serve as a backup too.

So while we all are being anal and have questions about the secondary, I have a one about their coursework section:

So Univerisity of Miami's classes are normally 3 semester credits. So my biochem class I only got 3 credits for, and they ask for 4 semester units for biochem. So should I add the semester of cell molec that I was planning to take (instead of putting it under biology)?
I took a bio class at UCLA, so since it was 5 units there, does that transfer to 3.3 semester units? Then for biology I would have a total of 12.3 credits still (without cell molec) with genetics and its lab as the advanced course. I am unsure if I should also put my advanced exercise physiology classes in the bio section, probably not.
And we have seperate classes for all our labs, so I guess I will combine the class and its lab on one line for all of them or it won't fit.

For the contact info, do we have to list alternate contacts or is that optional? I don't see the point why they need an alternate contact for OUR application 😕

The alternate contact info is if they cannot contact you they will try the other people so they can get in touch with you, just like on AMCAS. I would assume if they call to accept you and cannot get in touch they might use them.

To those of you who attended UCI undergrad, which classes did you put for the biology requirement? Just curious... 🙂

I put down Bio 94, 97, 110, 160, and 152

Hm, just realized i put bio 97 down twice (97, 98, 99 for the biochem requirement.) Oh well, I still got in. 😳

so do we have any final consensus to the third essay question...if we're a traditional applicant, do we leave it blank or do we still have to talk about our activities in general then?

I'm using it to talk about changes in my application since I submitted AMCAS back in early June.

Check your status page often. The admissions office often updates the page without informing the students. Good luck! Irvine is a great school. Too bad they didn't want me, but I'm not too sad about that.

Okay I called up UCI's admissions office and asked them about the third essay question. Just write that it's not applicable to you if you're still in school

ok, so I'm assuming that when UCI asks for 2 photos they want 2 of the same one right? or do they actually want 2 separate shots? is this like evening gown vs swimsuit, miss america style?
