im kinda curious about that too. What are you guys doing about housing? Are we supposed to sign up for something? i just remember filling out some form on the interview day, checking stuff off that I wasnt even sure of.

Haha ya... Where the hell did I sign up to live? Verano or Palo... something? I wish the acceptance package would have said a little more about housing.

Are there events the entire weekend? I will be in Boston and would like to book my tickets as earliest as possible to get the cheapest fares. Do you know if schools pay for travel since they're trying to convince you to attend?

UCI...I LOVE YOU...PLEASE TAKE ME 😍

ok I figured it out: once you're accepted, you're supposed to send the $20 fee to the UCI housing office. They'll process it and email you with more info. That was something I definitely loved about UCI, the housing seems very comfortable. Does anyone remember what the (private) housing complex at UCI was? They described one that sounded pretty cool, I think it had a swimming pool?

The private housing complex is called vista del campo and its "private" b/c its not owned by the university, however they only lease their apartments to UCI students and they have a separate section only for graduate students. It is brand spankin new (opened 2 years ago), fully furnished, with a full size bed in each room. They are opening another housing complex next to VDC called Vista Del Campo Norte. A free shuttle runs back and forth from the complex to the campus. VDC has a swimming pool with a bbq grill area, a basketball court, recreation center open 24 hours with pool tables, foosball, air hockey table, theater and a computer lab. I have had friends live there and it is very nice. One different between VDC and the on-campus housing that I consider very important is that VDC has AC, whereas PV does not. It can get VERY hot without AC. However PV is nice too bc they just built some new apartments.

wow...no other med school has housing that even compares to this. a private movie theater? gotta love the OC!

based on your extensive knowledge on this stuff, im guessing you went to undergrad at UCI. May I ask then if you know of any other private apt complexes around UCI that are fairly nice but not so pricey as VDC?

after browsing the VDC website, i dont think i can live at PV or verano anymore. haha.

I did go to UCI undergrad. 🙂 Housing in Irvine is VERY expensive. Will you have a car? If you don't, you would have to live in one of the apartment complexes across the street of the main campus (It is still quite a long walk to the medical campus). Housing immediately surrounding UCI is the MOST expensive unless you share a room with someone and the rooms are SMALL. If you want to live really close check out Stanford Court, Harvard Court, Dartmouth court, and Berkeley Court (Do you sense a pattern in the names here? Its like they're trying to rub it in our faces 🙄 ) If you go further out, you can probably find something a bit cheaper, but only if you plan on having roommates or housemates. Parkwest is considered the cheapest housing (not so cheap anymore tho, they raise rent ALOT each year). WHen I lived in parwest 3 years ago I paid $550 for my own room in a 3-bedroom apartment. Now, I you would have to pay at least $700 for your own room. They have a shuttle that runs from the complex to the main campus every 30 minutes, so it is very convenient. However, I warn you, I lived in parkwest for two years, and although it is fairly large compared to other complexes, it is the oldest and dirtiest complex. We had a resident rat that lived in the kitchen and went in and out through a hole behind the stove. We called management a couple of times and all they did was cover the hole with some meshy stuff and put a mouse trap there. The rat just plowed right through the meshy thing and went on with its business. My roommate had to finally call and pretend she was her mom and got really upset at management so they came the next day and plastered the hole. Wow..that was long...you didn't really need to know all that..hahaha

My final year I moved to San Marino Villa, a very nice complex, about 10 minutes away from UCI. It is pricey tho. A two bedroom was $1650.
If you want to live off campus go to www.rental-living.com. All of these complexes are owned my the Irvine Company that basically holds a monopoly of all of the apartments, hence the high prices.

I would suggest living at VDC, you will not find cheaper, nicer housing already furnished, with suttle service to campus. Trust me...you will not find cheap housing. THe ONLY way you can get a decent rent for your own room, is if you rent out a crappy privately owned home with like 5-6 bedrooms to share.

Good LUCK! :luck:

P.S. Im STILL waiting for UCI! Accept me already...PLEASE!

Chocobo, I interviewed at UCI 2/22, and UCI is one of my top choices. Im still waiting to hear from BU, WashU, and UCI. If i get accepted to UCI it will be very hard to give that up. Plus, living in Irvine is nice, even tho it can get a little bit boring, you always have the spectrum (D&B's thursday nite! ) , the block, the nice beaches, GREAT weather, 30 minutes from home, and LA isn't too far for a night out. 😀 Irvine is sounding better and better by the second..

LOL...even though it's a little scary being the only white dude in there, I never miss D&B's if I'm back at my family's home in Mission Viejo on a Thursday night. Mmmm such fond memories of Thanksgivings past...

HAHAHA..Bluntman..Thursday nites at D&B's is CRAZY! Its so crowded that you have to cram your way through to get to the bar and even then the bartenders are so busy that you end up standing there for a good 15 minutes to get the bartenders attention. I've seen a couple of white people trickled here and there..occasionally... Its true..its infested with Asian people from UCI.

The streets around here include Harvard, Yale, Berkeley, Cornell, Columbia, and Oxford. There's a Princeton Park. Not that anything's wrong with it--it just would have made more sense to have Irvine themed streets.

Anyways, if you want housing for UCI, there is cheaper housing farther away in central OC. I commute about 30-60 minutes each way to UCI from home, and let me tell you that the med students usually have plenty of parking in their part of campus.

UCI please accept me! I'm dedicating the next five months of my life to getting off the alternate list. It's not over yet!

Hey Gracey and Fierce, I just wanted to wish you guys luck. I interviewed on Feb. 6th and got the acceptance call on March 19 (Sunday evening, totally out of the blue). UCI was also my first choice so I'm thrilled. I'm guessing you guys will probably hear next week or so...I think Dr. Peterson makes the phone calls on weekends just to let you know. Anyways, good luck guys, I'm pullin' for you!

sorry "Pls accept me" I forgot about you....good luck to you too! haha

i interviewed on 2/22. looked on my status page and says "alternate list". lame :scared:

Wait, Feb 22 people have heard already? I interviewed Feb 6 and haven't heard yet! Has everyone else from Feb 6 heard back from them?

Did you get anything official? Letters? Email? I checked my status page after I read this and it doesn't say anything yet... :scared: Its ok tho...I'd rather not know when the decision will be made, cuz it makes me more anxious about the outcome. I would rather be pleasantly, or unpleasantly surprised. 😛 Determined not to stress out like all the others, altho I'm on SDN 24/7 at work (HAHAH "work").

don't worry gracey, i'm sure a lot of people will be withdrawing their acceptances which will open up more spots (three of my close friends are withdrawing)...i recommend sending update letters, etc. to demonstrate your interest in UCI. good luck!

I interviewed on Feb 6 and am on the alternate list 🙁

I will definately be sending in letters of intent, update letters, and extra letters of recommendations. Do you think I should call Dr. Peterson or Gayle to see what I need to do to get accepted?

Hey Gracey, Gayle Pierce is really helpful and nice, and she's pretty easy to get in touch with. So ya, i do recommend calling her. i think as long as you convince them that theyr'e still your top choice you'll be golden. take care.

Thanks I will do that. I talked to Gayle once before asking about interviews and she started talking about something really random and I ended up talking to her for like 15 minutes..more like she was talking for 15 minutes...heheh but it was cool. I hope UCI realizes how much i love UCI. 😍

i interviewed on 1/4 and finally found out i've been accepted today by calling the office. 🙄 my app had fallen through the cracks because i'm missing one bio requirement. i don't know when (if ever) i would've heard back if i hadn't called today, but i'm glad gayle worked things out!

i'll have to take another bio course to matriculate at uci. i wasn't planning on doing this, but for now, i'm glad uci is an option!
