UCI alternate list

Hey guys, I have a problem here. I sent 2 letters of INTENT to UCI stating that it is my top choice and that I'd go if accepted. I just got a call from UCSD, and I'm in. Now, is it ok to call uci and drop myself from the alternate list? I love uci, and i love ucsd just as much. I just want this waiting to end, move down and settle in sd asap and get on with my life!!!

YEAH! Way to go sdnstud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I envy your position right now as I would also like to hear from Irvine one way or the other so that I can plan my move to Tufts or to OC. I think it's completely acceptable to withdraw from Irvine seeing as how they haven't offered you anything and you're allowed to be pragmatic. You had full intent of going to UCI but they failed to offer you a position up to this point. It is your perogative to withdraw at this stage without compromising your integrity.

I called. They said they were working on it.

I get the same thing. I called yesterday and they said they didn't know of any problems. Maybe someone else should try calling today.

This waiting is driving me crazy....I am starting to loose hope

I'm actually starting to get mad. I had to send yet another deposit to Tufts today (since I prefer it to BU). I'm conflicted between getting upset at the wasted money or getting upset at UCI for taking so long to send out notifications. I mean, I've been on the waitlist for 6 months. Seems like plenty of time to make up their mind, I think.

I'm definitely in the same boat. Just got back from a few weeks of traveling, and low and behold, still waitlisted. I'm a little nervous about continuing to postpone looking for housing in Cleveland. Does UCI expect us to wait until August before giving up and signing a lease elsewhere? Best of luck for the both of us!!!! (UCI, if you're out there, take pity on our waitlist anxiety and let us know what's up!)

I envy the both of you...at least youve got a place to matriculate...im waiting for uci to show me the love while i work on my application for 2006. If I wait too long to submit, it hurts my chances, If I submit too early and end up getting accepted, I lose out on over $1000! yikes! :meanie:

Hey guys, I posted this about two weeks ago:

wk of 5/26: 1 sdner got accepted
5/30: 1
6/7: 2
6/14: 0
6/21:5
6/28: 4

These are # of SDNers accepted last year. My point is, UCI sees little alternate list movement until mid-June. Around the third week of June, there is usually a huge wave of acceptances. I think a batch of acceptances will go out next week (or the week after). Why? UCSD saw a series of acceptances the past 2-3 weeks. Most of these UCSD acceptees are either holding a spot or an alternate at UCI.

So, I'd say hold off on those apartment deposits and amcas application. Wait until the end of June. good luck.

Thank you very much for the info. I think I'll hold down on thinking or re-applying until mid-July. In the meantime I just hope to hear from either UCSD or UCI, gosh this is one crazy process I hope not to repeat it again- (ofcourse we all get to go through a similar process again once applying to residency, that's another crazy mess we get ourselves into)

Congrats traveladdict!!! 👍 Now, you're faced with a tough decision: Case vs. UCI.

I have a feeling that there will be more calls made this weekend and early next week. Hang in there!

Thanks guys! Yesterday I was a little dazed and confused, but today I'm really excited by the acceptance! Sdnstud, good luck at UCSD! Cammy, I'm pulling for you to get accepted sooner (i.e. w/in the week!) than later! Make sure you let them know you're leaving town soon and whether or not they'll be able to contact you when you're gone. Best wishes to all waitlistees (7 months of waitlist frustration can pay off)!

Last Wednesday (6/8/05) I received a call from Dr. Peterson and guess what…I’M IN!!!! UCI has always been my first choice especially because of the PRIME-LC Program and now that I have been accepted I don’t know what to say. To all those that have supported me throughout the entire application process I just want to say that I am deeply grateful for all the help that I have been given and that all the hard work and dedication paid off. To everyone in the process that hasn’t been accepted yet just hang in there because there is hope for those that persist. If I can do it you can do it! Good luck everyone.

Sincerely,

JRP aka “Curandero”

Congrats to all who have been accepted. I among all others am still waiting. I have sent my updates, additional rec letters and the whole nine yards. Ive also been accepted at Drexel and NYMC and have picked Drexel for right now. I really want to go to UCI and I hope it happens soon because like some of you i would like to get on with my plans. It makes it real hard to look for housing or know what to do when you don t know where your living next year. Good luck to all

congrats most recently to sdnstud (ucsd actually), traveladdict, curandero and everyone else who got in!

at least there's some hope for the rest of us on this sinking boat (raft?), as people in the past have gotten off the alternate list late in june and even in july. i'll be holding on until the bitter (hopefully sweet?) end... comon uci, don't let me down. instead, let me in.

Wowo, yeah congrats to all those who have been accepted, I hope to join your ranks soon. I talked to the admissions office adn there should be more movement this week. Good luck to all on the wait list

BUMPing for my UCI buddies!!!

Thanks, doozenberg. I'm praying for you bro.

Well guys, I can't believe I'm saying this but I've decided not to be part of the rat race any longer. I'm taking matters into my own hands and making the executive decision to go to Tufts School of Medicine. I think being strung along by Irvine was enough for me to realize that I don't want to go there as much as I do Tufts. Tufts was the only school I truly loved after my interview and I've decided to go with my gut this time.

Good luck to the rest of you! I'm rooting for you all! I'm sure you'll fare well wherever this insanely long and arduous road takes you. Oh, and I'll be checking in here from time to time so you're not rid of me yet 😉

UCI just lost an excellent candidate in Cammy1313. Cammy, I'm glad you made your decision and I am sure it is the right one for you. Good luck in Boston and have a fun trip. Keep in touch buddy.

Cammy (and others still on the waitlist), I don't know if this information will be at all helpful but I'll put it out there just in case you're thinking up giving up the fight. Exactly one week ago I was saying the same things to myself about Irvine. I was 100% sure I was going to attend Case no matter what. I was fed up with the UC admissions process and it was really making me not want to go to Irvine. Friday morning I e-mailed the admissions office a letter of withdrawal. I was washing my hands of Irvine and the waitlist. A couple hours later I received a call inviting me to join the entering class. Was I ecstatic? Overjoyed? No. I was confused. At the very least, I needed a few days to think, and luckily Irvine allowed me to hold off on an immediate decision.

My point: as soon as I had an official acceptance my mind completely changed. I don't have a rational explanation for why I suddenly changed my mind. I just did. It sort of scares me now to think that I might have completely screwed myself over had I not received a call that specific day. My advice would be to stay on the waitlist and carry on with plans to attend Tufts. You never know how you'll feel later on.

In any case, I'm sure you'll be happy with whichever decision you make and wherever you end up attending. Best of luck!!!

Kind of an incredible story. Do you think your withdrawal email might have actually triggered their offer of admission? I'm having a hard time believing that it was plain coincidence that the call came right after sending your withdrawal...

Thanks for that, traveladdict. I've mulled over every possible scenario and I also plan on submitting a withdrawl e-mail first thing Monday morning. The truth is, I'm ready for a few years of change and I don't think UCI is enough to make me want to stay anymore. Now UCLA would be a different story but that's just not in the cards. Truth is, I've always considered myself more of an east coast personality and I think I'd like to take this opportunity to explore that a bit further. I loved Boston when I lived there and I have great friends out there I think I miss more than I ever did my friends in CA. Bottom line, it's 4 years of my life I'd love to do something different with. CA will always be here for me.

That said, I'll let you all know should my withdrawl email prompt an acceptance call. I would love to have the opportunity to say, "thanks but you're too late."

and then they will proceed to call me. haha i wish!

bold decision cammy, but sounds like you're making the right one. i kind of know what you mean: staying in CA would be convenient in a lot of ways, but so utterly predictable and kinda boring. you're only young once, so might as well use the time to put yourself out there and grow in a different environment.

My withdrawl is official:

Hi Cammy1313,

Thank you for your notification. Your file will be updated. Good luck
to you in all your future endeavors.

Regards,

UC Irvine, School of Medicine
Office of Admissions and Outreach

Good luck guys!!!!

Best of luck to you Cammy. It is the ability to make such a tough decision under duress that shows you will be a great doctor. 👍

Coincidence or not, I just consider myself lucky. I was able to think more clearly about both schools without the frustration of the waitlist hovering over me. Irvine was where I wanted to go for a long time, but my desire to attend was eventually overpowered by my desire to know where I was headed in a couple months.

I have a lot of respect to everyone still holding out for a final decision.

Doozenberg, my fingers are crossed for you!

What duress was there really, and how does making a decision as which to which med school to go to make you a great potential doctor?

Listen, if you really want to go somewhere, you'll hold out. People in my class got accepted LATE August and still came. It sounds to me like it was a preemptive "Let me reject them before they reject me"

The truth is, you have a greater than 50% chance of being accepted on UCI's alternate list. Good luck at Tufts. I really hope you don't regret your decision because to me, the worst thing ever would be to wonder what would have happened.

And to Traveladdicit, I look forward to meeting you in August! Congrats!

I don't do regret. There is no "wrong" decision here.

Thanks for the concern!

word. cammy put her fist down and drew the line for herself, and props to her for that, but props also to the rest of us holding out with the hope of getting in.

i want it so bad that even if i get an eleventh hour call minutes before orientation, i will be tossing out all prior arrangements in order to go to uci. fortunately uci starts before the school i'm currently bound for.

It looks like we are in the same boat eh? It's not so bad. I'm trying to think of it as an opportunity to do some traveling or study some topics outside of science. Then again, getting rejected was not in the long term planning. 😡 How many schools did you apply to this year?

By waiting until mid-July, are you suggesting that you aren't worried about getting behind in rolling admissions?

Yeah I'm not too worry about the rolling admissions, truth be told I sent in my AMCAS application last year in mid-July- I applied to 20 schools (all for the MSTP) and got 7 interviews so that's not the problem. The problem is what it does it take to get to the final stage from getting an interview to being accepted- that is the question. I felt the interviews went fine but here I am in the waitlists for UCI, UCSD, OHSU, and Albert Eisntein. With no acceptences as of yet all I can do is hope for the best if not I'll reapply to med school and to their Phd. programs seperatly ( I would take the GREs in October) and one way or another just try to get in. Once in the system I figure I could do the leap from MD to MSTP or PhD. to MSTP.

You're right. There is no wrong decision, but there is such a thing a hasty decision, or one that you "thought" you would like but realize later that you don't. Like I said before: Good Luck at Tufts.

I'm not trying to be arrogant or mean, but how can you be sure applying later in the cycle is not what landed you on the waitlists? By the way, MSTP is a bit different than the MD process, so everyone out there apply ASAP!

To be honest I have no idea if that is the reason why I'm on a waitlist or not- all I know is what I have experienced and that is what I have seen personally. Now if you think that its best for you to apply now while being on the waitlist, I say go for it- afterall the worst thing one can do is regret the things you didn't do. I just hope for both our sakes that we end up in med school this year and not have to reapply. Good luck to you

Very true, I'm not sure if re-applying affects one's chances on the waitlist. I hope everyone gets in this time around and doesn't have to worry about that! Good luck!
