are you in state for UCR? Would probably go there as a state school would be cheaper and close to your support network (presumably)

I love what loyola has to offer such as it being a community-oriented based school and having many hospitals associated with it, but I don't have family out in the midwest. However, I lived in so-cal my whole life and I have a ton of family here, but I'm not interested in primary care, as riverside pushes for.
I also really want a school that prep wells for step exams

All schools prepare you the same for step (step score is pretty individual effort based), it's just a matter of how much extra work they give you to take up your studying time.

Having home programs is amazing, esp if you want something more competitive

UCR pushes primary care... all schools do. Plenty people from their class match into non-primary care specalities.

Given you are instate, UCR prob way cheaper.

I would go with Loyola. More established school at this point and probably has better hospitals too. If you’re interested in radiology or specialization go with Loyola

Hey, responding on my fiance’s account but i go to loyola and i grew up in socal. If you want a residency in cali youre probably better off going UCR. There’s a perception that california students at loyola have to work twice as hard than med students from california schools to compete for the same residency spots. Additionally, being close to family and friends could make a world of a difference for you as far as social supoort and having fun outside of school goes. That being said, there is a huge advantage to going to a school like loyola. Im achieving goals in research and academics that i really dont think would have been possible going to other schools. The doctors here are all passionate about mentoring loyola students, which has already helped my career tremendously. Just my two cents. Congrats on two amazing choices.

Having a home program where you can do research in, rotate thru, and who's attendings are probably lecturers/advisors for your school = you have a huge leg up in the match for your home program unless you actually piss people off. Your home program might not be the best in nation or even one you would rank highly, but having that there as an option vs not is perferred
