UCSF Application 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received 3 letters from UCSF. Two of which I knew (thank you letter and financial aid) from what I have read on SDN. The third I could not figure out. Of course, my heart started to race. Turned out to be another financial aid letter... I think I have to go exercise off this built up anxiety. Haha

Note: Both financial aid letters were exactly the same.

Oy oy oy, so it begins

I'm sorry to hear that jmcfa002 🙁

[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Pharmacy: Many teams will have pharmacy students or PharmDs on them. They are an extremely valuable resource (dosing, interactions, etc.) and will also fill out the discharge medication list. They can even phone in the meds to a patient's local pharmacy so you don't have to hunt around for someone with a California prescription number..
[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Teams: Two interns, one R2 (dictates, helps interns in patient management, covers interns on their clinic days, gives you days off), 1 Heme–Onc fellow (writes chemo orders, liaison to attending), one attending, and occasional private attendings. You need to touch base with privates each morning about the plan. Each team also has a nurse practitioner who follows non-ICU CRI patients supervised by the R2 (a.k.a. the third intern). The NP's are very experienced with BMT and can be a useful resource. The NP's will generally take 1 or 2 admissions on a team's admitting day. Each team also has a pharmacist resident/student who takes care of all TPN orders/electrolyte repletion (except in the ICU). You have no idea what a difference this has made..
Found this in one of the UCSF's Department of Medicine policy handbooks ...

Sorry, case of insomnia + I read too much 🙁. Can't sleep on days I don't work 9 hours, not tired enough haha. Oy too much energy...

Thanks for posting that information Kmoogs. It's always good to hear when pharmacists are appreciated. 👍

On a side note, weren't you advising me to relax? From the looks of it, not being able to sleep and staying up late reading a policy handbook, sounds like you need some relaxing yourself. Haha

Nah, Large matcha green tea @ 10 PM + no running around all day for customers = too much energy . That will change today, I'm going to be dead tired...

You might want to be more discrete about who you interviewed with. Joel hovers over the SDN forums and there aren't too many people who interviewed with the interviewers you listed, so they can pick you right out of the pile.

I'm new to SDN-my cousin told me about it. He is pre-med. Rycetrix, I have to agree with you. My mentor tells me how pharmacy is a very small world. This is very good advice. Joel has been very nice to me throughout my application process. I wouldn't be surprised if he reads all of these posts. I googled the people Shleima linked to and they seem to be very experienced. I hope UCSF accepts me.

Oh he definitely, without a doubt, reads SDN. His blog answers questions/issues that have shown up on SDN from time to time (Passion4Sci declining the interview, my question about meeting other prospectives). His talks during the interview days also hinted/joked about at certain conspiracy theories on SDN

LOL. Good to know. So when are we supposed to hear back? I am getting nervous. My interviews went well--at least I think they did. Both of my interviewers were really nice but they did ask me challenging questions. Guess that is a part of it.

RE: quality of UCSF faculty, before her interview day my wife set up informational interviews with several UCSF faculty specifically because she found their bodies of work intriguing. I would definitely recommend this to future applicants... even if you don't end up at UCSF, having the opportunity to talk with leaders in the field is well worth the investment of time. And besides, you're on campus for a reason, right? Best to maximize the quality of your time while you're there.

Through sheer luck, she wound up sending informational interview requests to the two professors who were destined to interview her! (Unfortunately neither of them was available to meet with her beforehand... maybe they knew she was on their interview list? If they knew beforehand, they certainly didn't let on that they knew.)

soon... They said the last date is April 1st. From last year's forum, they start mailing letters starting March 5th, whether or not it will be the same this year, I don't know. But I know for sure that the latest date is April 1st.

hm..some people mentioned that they received 3 letters from UCSF..i guess two financial aid letters and one thank-you letter? I only received two letters so far..hm...i guess only those that will get in receive 3 letters? ok, now im more nervous lol.

The two financial aid letters that I received were exactly the same. Maybe their printer accidentally printed out two for me. So don't make anything of it. It might have just been an accident.

it's not a rejection until you actually get a rejection letter. plus, it may take longer to receive mail depending on where you are at. people were posting about thank you letters for a while before I actually got my letters.

i only had 2 letters so far

would it be fabulous if they just double their class size to 250 and we all get in? I would love that.

😍 Wished that could be the case. I didn't think too much about the interview last week, but these last two days, I've been replaying in my head the things I wished I should've said and other things I could've said differently. Haha, can't help it. Now just hoping for the best.

Omg..that's exactly how I feel right now...i cant even stay focused in my study anymore and I have an exam tomorrow..I wish I could have said things differently...sigh...this is such a torture...so painful 🙁

Joel was saying at the interview day that they invited less than 250 people this year. That means we all have more chance to get in! So just relax!!!🙂

That is how i feel too!!! I don't have school anymore and this is all I can think about at work everyday as I fill the prescriptions. *sign* I think i'm going to be emotionally exhausted before I even get my letter!!! 😱

really? I seriously thought they said 250.

Joel said this round of application process had the most applicants by far (more than 1600), and that they were interviewing fewer than they have ever done. He did say less than 250, but that can be subjective. What if it was 249? Haha. I took it as more than 200 but less than 250.

Well, they could have invited 250 but interviewed less than 250. Passion4Sci along with a couple others on SDN declined their UCSF interviews this year...

Let's not make up conspiracy theories  It just leads to more conspiracy theories.

You know, I feel okay until I check this page. Then I read the comments and get super nervous and stressed..... :scared:

Don't, I even told people after tours - do not read SDN at this moment. :meanie: It's going to be excruciatingly painful and anxiety envoking to keep up with this thread, especially once the letters start coming in but yours isn't there yet.

Leave this thread for a couple weeks to save yourself from much anxiety. 🙂

haha yeah good point

Wow~! This thread is going out of control!! Too many anxious people... That's why I stopped coming in here for a while... I shouldn't have clicked this thread just now.. Darn it.. 😀 I agree with what Cheb said above.

Any one has started their financial aid application for UCSF? It says "conditional" package given to Pharmacy school student... I want to see the package first to decide that school....I have until 4/9 to decide UCSD....when can I get'em... any one know from previous years?

I know what you mean ... I started my financial application early, and I'm almost done in hopes they'd get me a "package" early, but Chebs indicated earlier that it won't be till mid-summer/late summer that you'll get the package.

This happens every year.

Congratulations on your acceptance to MD! But let's wait and go to UCSF together....!!!!! Both are really nice schools I think...

A classmate of mine from undergrad just got a denial letter from UCSF. That is not a good sign. 😕 Will I get one too???? Anxiety is setting in.

UCSF would be my top choice school ...... *___* I only have till 3/19 till I have to put down my deposit. Hope something comes in before then! It'd be awesome if we both got in!

Eek, that is pretty nervewracking! I guess we'll find out in 2-3 days, since there's the travel time to the east coast....

Good luck to everyone!

Hmm ... time to check my mail, brb.

edit: nadda

I find it amusing that last year's UCSF waitlist/acceptance denied thread is the 23rd all time viewed thread in the Pre-Pharmacy forum ... that is a lot of anxious energy... (Our thread is 12th all time in Pre-Pharm lol, but we don't have a new thread for little step along the way)

Where is your friend from? Cali? Which part of Cali?

Anxious? Anxiety? Inevitable. =P No mail received today. Rejection? Waitlisted? Accepted? Better off if I go watch Alice in Wonderland in 3D and have Brazilian BBQ this weekend. Talk about eating when anxious! I've had almost a dozen of Diddy Riese this week!

San Diego...and I don't know what the letter said exactly. I suppose they don't tell you the full story with details as to why you weren't chosen. If I am denied, I am calling in to find out why. Inquiring minds want to know.

I didn't know that they let you meet with professors on the day you are interviewing. Too bad. Maybe that would have helped me.

You can set up an appointment with Joel later on after the chaos dies down at the admissions office. I believe Cheb with over her application with Joel two years ago... I don't know what is discussed but I guess I'll find out if I get rejected .

Up to the interview part would have been the hardest part to be selected. I am sure it's not easy for SF to denied admission to those from the 250 theY interviewed. No matter what it comes down to, always keep your head up, stay positive, and be confident. Because u have made it this far, u can go even farther in life. Only u know yourself best; admissions can only know so much from your essays and your 45 min interview.

Well, sadly my dear wife was rejected on 3/5 from UCSF, for the second year in a row. The reason stated in the letter was that her oral/written english was not up to their standard. She immigrated to this country 3 years ago from Taiwan, and as such was clearly at a disadvantage in this regard. (This was after traveling around the world twice, once alone for 6 months and again with me for about 9).

I have to say, I'm disappointed because for two years I honestly and truly held on to this almost religious belief that UCSF would eventually see that what she lacked in native fluency, she would make up for with her broad international perspective, drive, compassion and enthusiasm for the profession (and life). For two years I held on to the belief that UCSF would see that her ability to articulate in English was already very good, and would only get better during the course of her education and her life in the United States. (Certainly her communication ability was good enough for two other pharmacy schools to accept her.) I had faith that UCSF would understand the cultural factor, that Chinese society all but forbids bragging about one's accomplishments, and that this is one of the hardest things for my wife to do (though she does it extremely well in her pre written essays, which she was of course able to polish and perfect). And I really though this time, the second application and the second interview, they would know her well enough to see what I see in her... that she has massive potential to reach the greatest heights in this profession-- she just needs to be given a chance. I really thought that UCSF would be the one to identify her spark and offer her that opportunity. It's a sad thing to wake up one day and realize that your perceptions are wrong, that you've been praying at the wrong altar, that you've built up an idea about something that may never have really existed.

Anyway, I suppose that's all from me-- take care, everyone and good luck to all the rest of you in achieving your dreams.

That sucks 🙁. So they wrote a reason in the letter? Everyone that is rejected gets a personalized letter?

Bah, two rejections and no acceptances so far ...

Edit: Just curious schleima, but did your wife receive a thank you letter? If so... what day? (Asking since you're still around)
