Does anyone know what kind of ENGL course would UCSF accept?
I was told that one of my English courses do not meet part of the requirement, so I'll need to find another course to take this summer.
I'm wondering if UCSF is looking for a course more focused on English writing (e.g. English Composition) or a literature-based course such as Children's Literature.
Thanks in advance!

Writing-intensive course is what they're looking for--creative writing doesn't count

a. English
Two courses in English composition. (Note: ESL, Scientific, Professional, Technical and Creative Writing classes do not fulfill the English requirement)

It specifically says composition. If the literature course is under the English department specifically it will likely be fine. It might help if you provided your options for the summer, that way we could see if it would work based on the course title and description.

Anyway, what you NEED to do is contact UCSF admissions once you have a course in mind and verify directly with them that it will count. This is the only true way of knowing that you're good to go.

By the way, congrats on UCSF! Im pretty sure I remember you talking about it at our NYU interview 🙂

Thank you, MowgliR. Would you think "Introduction to Academic Writing" would satisfy UCSF's requirement? This course is quite writing-intensive. I know it's probably best to contact their office directly, but I know they are busy this week, so I'm hoping to enroll in a course as soon as possible before it fills up 🙂

P.S. Thanks Kahr! Didn't see your msg until I posted mine. A few courses I have in mind are:
- Intro to Academic Writing
- Studies in Children's Literature
- Intro to Linguistics
Those are from my home university. I can provide more from another university if none of them seem to work.
Yeah I've already contacted UCSF, but I probably won't hear back until next week earliest.

A writing intensive course will most likely be acceptable, I say most likely because it's possibly to have a writing intensive course under a department other than english (I took several writing intensive courses in the History department), and UCSF specifies English.

It's probable that the best one is the first you listed, Academic Writing. Could you tell us which department each course falls under? Example: ENG 100 (english 100), CLIT 100 (comparative literature), etc. I have a feeling a linguistics course will not satisfy that requirement, but a literature course may (you really have to check with UCSF 😉

I want to also add that it's possible it doesn't have to be writing intensive at all, but just a normal english course, another thing to check with UCSF directly.

But yeah, you did the right thing by contacting UCSF, as again, they're the only ones who can give you the green light for sure for the course being acceptable.
