i am just curious as to anyone on here who was acccepted to ucsf; what were your stats (gpa, extracurriculars, pharm experience, etc)

also, what are your recommendations on where to live in the city? are there any good apartments near the campus? i won't be applying for a while but i figure it can't hurt to get a head start on looking into these things.

i got accepted off the waitlist in april. pharmcas had my sci gpa around 3.5 & non sci at 3.9. school extracurriculars were a women in sci club and tribeta, and outside of school i did a less common sport; all were good things to talk/write about. i think volunteering is important, i did retail and ucsf and it was a big part of my app and interview. if anyone volunteers @ ucsf, i suggest that you make it a more long-term thing b/c it can be hard to get to know the pharmacists b/c they are very busy!

I'm a second year student, don't worry about stats...i think I was at a 3.71 cumulative, not sure on the science, I grad with honors from LMU with a BS degree in Biology. I wasn't waitlisted or anything. I worked for about 3 years, 1 year in Hollywood working for production companies, 6 months with Amgen, then 1.5 years with express-scripts mail order as a trainer for pharmacy techs, designed and wrote a textbook there, in upper mgmt, the whole thing. I volunteered weekly in a mentoring program with students from disadvantaged areas in Phoenix, AZ, who were given full scholarships to college upon completion of the program into HS. My kid was about 11 at the time.

I think the interview is another component. From what the student said who interviewed me, I knocked it out of the park. I felt that way when I left honestly. Don't fret about grades, just be sure to beef up other aspects of your resume and application. Obviously, writing is also important with the essays and the written portion of the interview. There are alot of components other than stats. I was worried bc I was out of state, and I discovered they treat everyone the same, NO MATTER WHAT STATE you are from! To those reading from other states, we had 20% out of state...so don't let that sway you from not applying.

In the city, I recommend living in the sunset district btwn 3rd and 14th Ave. on Irving or Judah. It's fairly close to campus. They also have campus housing, brand new apartments at Mission Bay (our newest campus of many in SF).

Let me know if you have any other questions. If you'd like you can send me your essays and I can give you some criticism or something.

My email addy is [email protected]
Good luck!

i don't think they send out invites until late december/early january. they are not rolling so they look at apps after they're all in. interviews are late january/february.

as for stats, i had a 3.5 cumulative, 3.4 pre req, and 3.3 science from uc berkeley. no pharm experience, coordinated a class on health ethics and also was a teaching assistant for the same class, taught kids at a museum, worked in a lab, and did some public speaking on organ donation.

like curt said, ucsf looks at a lot of different factors so don't worry if you don't have the best grades. intervew, letters of rec, and the application itself counts too. good luck.
