top half!! just got the letter. freaked out a little when I saw the envelope but definitely about the best possible news at this point. anyone have any ideas how many they've historically taken off the waitlist?

for the rest who are waiting: I'm in the Bay Area. Letter is dated April 30 and postmarked May 2.

Congrats! Tell us more...does it give any other info? Like, is it ranked? Is there a timeframe in which they expect to notify people?

Yeah, that's what I figured. I think they sent out lower half and rejects last week and top half waitlisters now.

Congratulations, angel. Well done. I heard that the top half gets a good bit of movement. But as to how much, I'll leave it to the experts.

I assume it's ranked but it doesn't specifically say, just that "you are ranked in the top half our list of about 100 alternates" (ha they forgot an 'of')

there's financial aid information and some more info about requirements and such. the letter says the list is active until school starts on Sept 4, but if you start at another medical school they automatically take you off the list (at first I was thinking this sucks for people who have been accepted to schools that start early, but then again I'm sure there's very little waitlist movement after the start of August).

don't worry ltrain, you'll get all this information yourself in your own letter! 😀

Howdy all. I got a top-half waitlist letter today; I'm in the South Bay. I checked out last year's thread, and the earliest someone got off the waitlist was on "Saturday 5/20." I guess we have about three more weeks until the compulsive mail checking beings again. Best of luck to everyone here.

Since UCSF admitted about 250 people last year... and realistically only people from the top-half of the 100 person list have a shot... that suggests they've already accepted about 200 people this year. Does that logic seem correct? Not that it really makes a difference whether we get in or not. 200 just seems like a lot of ppl for ~141 spots.

Congrats. Dean Wofsy told us on interview day that he expected they would offer 200-205 outright acceptances, then waitlist another 100. So your logic is sound. They admitted 245 total last year... good luck!

Hmm. Why do they do this? Is there another category of the WL? Do they just hate us?

Anyway, keeping fingers crossed for all that they accept as many as last year...I feel like every school I visited this cycle was telling us how they had so many more qualified applicants this year...might mean fewer acceptances for admitted students to choose from. Just some happy Friday morning thoughts...

Yes, but... I think the random variation in people's preferences for other schools from year to year is a bigger factor. (Was that too verbose?) I remember Yale has had huge fluctuation in matriculation rates in recent years.

More qualified applicants probably makes it more difficult to get an interview.

Ya, but more difficult to get an interview overall might translate to fewer acceptances per applicant. I don't know. Maybe not.

Anyone get any news today? I guess it's still too early for you west coast people.

I remember the associate dean (not Dr. Wofsy, he wasn't there the day I interviewed) saying that they had more applicants this year, but that they interviewed the same number of people, so they already cut out the extras before that stage... Not sure if any of this speculation helps anything, but at least that...Also, I met several people recently at another revisit who got into UCSF that are definitely not attending, so there is some slight hope right there! =)

Question for you guys: Do you think we have to send in the transcripts right away? I know it says to do so, but it also says accepted students will not be allowed to register until transcripts are received, leading me to believe that they could be just be sent if an acceptance was offered.

I just got back from a week-long trip to Yosemite to find a BIG, FAT rejection letter (okay, it was actually small & thin). That was not so bad, but to see all my comrades fallen as well, that was just WRONG.*sniff sniff*🙁

NDY, doctorplastic, vernal equinox, mrs. smith, Karakiz, I'm vey sorry for the bad news (2nd half/rejection). You are all so wonderful and funny and I was sooo looking forward to meeting all of you (I'm pretty bumbed now that I won't 🙁). It has been a pleasure being in your company through this whole crazy process. Thank you for all the support.

As for me, It's very likely that I'll attend UCI (or maybe USC if I come off the waitlist), and I wish the rest of you all the best. As many have said, wherever we choose to go I'm sure we will make excellent physicians.😀

P.S. Senior Fish, cgscribe, photogirl, and anyone else I've missed...have a blast @ UCSF on all of our behalfs!!! Congrats to Itrain, Caribou, and everyone else who got on the top 1/2, and good luck to all still waiting

it says to send in the transcripts within 4 weeks of "this notice" - so do it within the next month. sounds like they just want to make sure they and you have all your ducks in a row if you get accepted and decide to attend later in the game.

So, second look was awesome. This year's class is full of amazing people, I wish you all the best with waitlist movement. There were a fair amount of people undecided (probably 35%. Though, to be honest, many were leaning more and more towards SF as the activities went on). Wofsy has said that they've accepted a little more than 200 already, just to add a little more info.

I met about 5 people who probably will not go and 2 that will surely not attend (but they wanted to spend a weekend in SF), so that's most likely 7 spots... Wofsy said 204 have been accepted so far. It was a great second look, met a lot of incredible SDNers. Sat and read in the gorgeous Golden Gate Park... We'll definitely have an incredibly diverse class! Good luck to the WLers! I'm sure a lot of you will be there. One 1st year said that she believes that about 20-25 people in their class were off the waitlist.
