UF Study on Distance Learning

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Here's a study that was done by UF comparing stress levels between campuses. The background gives you an idea of distance learning. It's worth reading if you're considering going to a remote campus.

Do you agree with the results about St. Pete being similarly burnt out as Gainesville?

If so, what do you think is the cause? Is your campus schedule more hectic? Is it the proctors or admins? classmates perhaps?

It is definately the proctors and administrators at our campus. During PTX in year 3, the classes are video taped. If you were picked to perform that week, you have to go watch the video and grade your peers. All the campuses are posted. In Jax & Orlando, the students appear to enjoy themselves. In St. Pete we are all nervous wrecks. Even Skills Lab, which was supposed to be fun and an easy A class was made into a horrible grilling session. Our group met for 2 hours before class to go over questions. Even then, I could only pull a B+ out of the class.

For the 1st & 2nd years, Practicum presentations are hell with the proctor they use. The proctor docks professionalism points for any little thing. During presentations she walks and looks to see if you are paying attention. If you have out notes for an upcoming exam, you'll get docked. We also had to draw our own concept maps in year 2. We got docked points for these, too. Once I miscounted and only had 59 concepts drawn on my sheet. I lost enough points to not get an A. This should have been a minor thing. In St Pete, in just about every class you get the feeling that they want you to fail.

I am dreading going back for the final 8 weeks, thinking that they will succeed in their goal of making me flunk out. I almost requested a transfer to another campus, but I decided not to add another 1/2 hour to my commute.

I thought this article was very interesting. I'm really interested in the NAPLEX results for this year too as compared by campuses. It will definately be interesting to see if there are any differences in passing rates.

I spoke with some St. Pete students yesterday at the Phi Lamda Sigma induction. We were joking about the results and of course none of them were surprised due to their stressful proctors and facilitators. I definately wouldn't say that in Orlando that we're not stressed during PTX 3. Many of us get very nervous. It does seem that overall our facilitators are understanding and willing to help us though. It really sucks for St. Pete students.

I'm sure PTX 3 is stressful everywhere. The problem is all campuses are graded together at the end to get an average. This becomes a big disadvantage for St Pete students. I thought that I did well during my spring semester, but they chose to grade my performances so low that I still only made a C+. If it wasn't for regular exams, my GPA would suck.

The Gainesville students who got reassigned to St Pete for the last 8 weeks are not very happy.

This study is polarized and incomplete. General assumptions were made with a comparison of apples and oranges. The study alluded to distance vs. founding campus burnout equality. However, the missing component of the study is why. What differences and commonalities exist between the four locations that would lead to plurality? Are the underlying currents eliciting similar responses the same? Inquiring minds would like to know.

I think it’s a matter of respect. If they dove into the causes, the article might be received more negatively by some faculty and seen as a direct attack on the Gainesville and St. Pete administration on how they run shop. I think this is a better method of getting Gainesville and St. Pete to be more receptive in considering changes.

The possible causes I was speaking of were more along the lines of demographics and environment. For instance, the criterion for a 20 something crowd to feel burned out is different than a 30 something crowd. Additionally, the "college" life may impose the burned out morale more so than a more independent "remote" lifestyle. You have to believe there is a completely different dynamic when comparing a 24 yo student on campus to a 34 yo student with a family, mortgage, and car payment(s).

This may seem like a stupid question, but exactly how different is Ptx 3 from Ptx 2? You guys are scaring me!!

Ahh ok. 👍

I think the campuses should have monthly nights of alcohol dispensing to relieve some of this burning out. 🙂 Or maybe a free shot after every exam and everyone can sober up during the inevitable gathering outside..... where everyone asks 'did you pick such and such for that question?'
