UHS students class of 2004

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey and a hearty congrats to all my future classmates:

I've been working like a mad-woman wrapping up my research so I can actually be in KC by the time classes start, but today I decided to check out the net to see if there was anybody out there. Boy, do I feel like I'm outta the loop! SD, the picnic sounds great. I'll e-mail ya.

I think I've decided on Bennington Ridge. Any comments, concerns, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

I am so looking forward to meeting all of you. Enjoy your summers!!!

All the very best, Beth

Yikes. I don't know what I just got myself into. It was so easy keeping track of 20-odd some people, now I just invited the rest of the UHS Class of 2004.

A half-page little blurb about the BBQ will be included in the packet to be sent out this week or next to everybody. (thanks Eric J)

So, I really hope that Sunday Aug 6th at 3:00 pm is still accurate. Otherwise, I'm going to have a lot of clean-up work to do...

Sara, that was a fantastic flyer you put together, especially on such short notice!!If there is anything I can do to help put the final touches on the party, let me know.

We're really looking forward to making the move up to KC, just hope the latest offer we put on a house is accepted by the builder....should know today or tomorrow..

See y'all really soon...

WOW!! Great job SD and flipper. A picnic just wouldn't be the same without the rest of the class. Sunday, the 6th is still fine with us--we will definitely be there. Let us know how we can help.

Where abouts did you find a house, Eric J?? Good Luck--hope it all works out.

Hey everyone_

sorry it has been so long since I posted. I have been so busy. I just graduated from undergrad. (That felt really good). My husband and I are in the process of finding a place to move. SD, great job letting everyone know. I have a small problem. Do you think there are going to be more than 100 people. (If there are we might have to move the place b/c it only holds 100 people, But there are other parks that hold more people) Let me know what every one thinks. SOON!!!!!!

Thanks Everyone!

I talked to the people at Antioch park and the other shetler is still open, so if we see that there are going to be more than 100 people we can always rent out the other shetler. The shetler seats 100 people, so if we can't get the other shelter maybe some people can bring extra chairs or blankets. What do the rest of you think?

I think that bringing chairs and blankets will work. Lots of people will be standing and talking, and people will probably drift in and out during the scheduled time. I doubt that everyone will show up at the start and stay until the end. I got the package today - nice job, Sara!

Maire

I think that Maire is right. Bring Blankets etc., but I'm sure not everyone will show and certainly not all at once. Hopefully it will be nice enough that not everyone will want to be under the shelter anyway!!

I think we all owe Sara and Julie a big "THANKS" for their work in organizing this. I hope to see everyone there!

Doesn?t UHS organize a picnic for the incoming students anymore? It did for our class and it was great.

P.S. They did an excellent job with the graduation ceremony. Very happy to have attended UHS.

Has anyone received their FA award letter yet?

Miglo!! Long time, not talk!! Now, I TOLD YOU when we interviewed together that you should go to UHS! You could've had so much fun with all of us.

Has anyone received any info on financial aid yet. I know it will still be a while but I am getting nervous about it!!!

Nope, no FA info yet here. When I spoke with them last month they said they would mail the award letters in June. This waiting thing is tough!

Did you all get the orientation packets? Any comments?

Kinda off the topic, but when you guys were all looking for housing, did any of you check out a place called Cove North Duplexes? We are trying to do some preliminary shopping on the net and Apartment Search sent this place as one of our options and it looks alright... Any input would be GREAT! Thanks!

Does anyone have a suggestion on where to purchase the "first year required equipment?"

I found a couple of sites on the internet that carry everything on the list (except disposable speculas) and one of the sites says they specialize in supplying medical students.

The sites are:
www.Dotmedical.com
www.steeles.com

Both sites are for the same company, but are offering slightly different prices.

If anyone has other suggestions please post!!!

See y'all really soon!

Don't buy the first year equipment yet!! You will not need it until after Christmas. Also, there will be companies that will come to the school to try and sell you their stuff. Only then will you get a good idea about what is what and what equipment is the best. Also, there will be smaller companies who will offer the same equipment at drasticallt lower prices, and a lot of people will buy from them. We even had a few students who had family members i nthe business who passed around order forms. The UHS bookstore is expensive, so don't buy equipment there. Take my advice and wait until after school starts before you buy anything (even books!) 99% of your studying will be from class notes, so wait until you know what books you need (you most definitly do not need all the books on the required books list they send you!) If you have questions about specific books or anything else, feel free to e-mail me or post it here.

Just to make sure my question is not forgotten... Did anyone happen to see the Cove North Duplexes? I think they are North of the River. Thanks!

To BEBOP,

I lived at Bennington while at UHS. When you sign your lease, unless you sign it on the 1st of the month, your 12 months will begin at the 1st of the following month. Many people move in the week before orientation, probably around August 7th. That means when you move out (either after 1st or 2nd year), you will be left with paying for rent in August. They will tell you that there will be no problem renting your apartment because more students would be coming in. I ended up paying an extra month of rent at a time when I was moving to do rotations. If you move to KC a week earlier and begin your lease on August 1st, you could avoid this problem. Believe me, $500 is a lot when you're trying to stretch your financial aid money. Good luck.

Hey all my fellow UHS'ers.

Just a quick note to let you all know that we hit the big "50" for the people count. This includes 30 students, plus significant others/family. Hey, what will we do if the rest of the class (195 of them) all decide to come?!

Does anyone know what we do about getting our textbooks? Do we go to the school and get a list or wait until orientation?

The school should mail you a list of required texts (don't run out and buy all of them!) You may try calling the school to find out when they plan on giving you that info.

Hello fellow UHS 2004 classmates! I'm so greatful to my big UHS bro for telling me about this site. My husband and I are moving to the Walnut Creek Apts in mid July, anyone moving in there? or moving from CA?

Hey SD, saw your flyer in the packet--what a great idea to slip it in there. It sounds like we will probably get an updated version of the growing class list some time soon. Thanks so much for doing all that. Wouldn't it be a blast if everyone shows--that just goes to show that the UHS spirit for class of 2004 is fabulously strong (and they ain't seen nottin' yet!) Can't wait--just 5 more weeks of work for us!

Have a great summer everyone!!

I talked with someone from Steele, and he suggested waiting until they come to UHS this fall to order the equipment. He said that way we could decrease shipping costs. As it turned out, a friend of mine who is a PA GAVE me her diagnostic kit and BP set. I can't believe it!
smile.gif
Anyway, I was very impressed with the no-pressure stuff. Hope this helps. Maire

Thanks for the info Maire!

Also FYI:

Spoke with Mary Kay in fin. aid today regarding student loan deferments and pending FA award letters. She said the letters would be going out in June and July based on when your FA file was complete. While she wouldn't commit to any dates, I got the impression that no letters had gone out yet and that it would be closer to the end of the month before we would receive our notifications.

As for deferment of undergrad student loans, she would hold the request if you mail it to her until she can certify your eligibilty for deferment upon matriculation.

That's all I have for y'all today!

See you soon!

Hey thanks for the FA info, waiting for this is about as bad as waiting for the acceptance letter. Oh well I guess we will find out soon enough.

Just wanted to let you know that I never bought an ophthalmoscope/otoscope set and I made it through UHS without problems. I'm not sure if this has changed, but most of the time you can share equipment. There were only a few Physical Diagnosis labs and the Score One for Health program (in your 2nd year) that you use your equipment. I bought a stethoscope and a BP set. Someone else bought the ophtho/oto set and we switched off. Don't be in a hurry to buy equipment or books. Your big bro/sis will be able to tell you what you'll need.

Hey, guys!

How is everyone doing? Hope the preparations to come to KC is going well for everyone. I have a questions. I was looking on UHS's web page and they had the test blocks for the first year posted. The test are every couple of weeks (just like it was last year) I thought we were going to have test every monday. Has anyone heard if somethings chanced with the new teaching style? Does anyone know how are classes are going to be structured? I know I'll find out soon enough, guess I am just excited to find out how things are going to go

The fall academic calender at http://www.uhs.edu/admissions/registrar/fall.asp has more information regarding test dates for MSI students. On September 29th we will have the Foundations of Medicine Cumulative Exam. In November (TBA) we will have the Musculoskeletal Cumulative Exam and on December 22nd we will have the Skin/Blood and Lymph Cumulative Exam.
Just thought I would share this with my future classmates.

Well this is my last night, working as a nurse, just wanted to celebrate a little. I also wanted to say that I am looking forward to meeting all of you, and I wanted to tell Eric that if I was going to be there on the 3rd I would be glad to help, however, I will not be in KC until the 8th (sorry). Maybe some other time.

Hey, did anyone ready the article in one of the newsletters that UHS sends about the MBA program that they are adding with Rockhurst University? Just wondering what people thought about the program. I graduated from Rockhurst University and I know that they have a good MBA program.

Hi everyone,
I will attending UHS in August and wondering if anyone out there might be looking for a roommate? I'm moving from Providence, RI where I am a sales rep for a headhunting firm. I graduated from Florida State and I spent four years in the U.S. Army. I'm very low key and easy to live with (I think)....I sent out an email to the names on the roommate list provided by UHS, but not any luck yet sio I figured I would try here. Email me if interested ([email protected]). Thanks

Hey Pete! No luck yet on your roommate search? I wish you luck. Anyways, do you think you may be out there by the 6th? We're having a kickin' BBQ picnic.

Just for you, Pete, GO GATORS!!!

A few weeks back, I received a brochure from some insurance agent about Blue Cross/Shield health insurance. This was at a discount rate for UHS students. I lost this recently, and was wondering if anyone else got it? If so, can you e-mail me some of the information that was on it? Like who was the agent and how much it was per month? Any help would be great....Thanks!

Okay, I need some brainstorming help with this BBQ-picnic. I've been thinking about it, and so far, my best idea is to have a sign-up list with half the people bringing food, the other half paying money. This way, one person could get all of the hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, condiments, plates, etc, and we wouldn't run out if people didn't show up.

So, for instance, say we have 50 first years coming, then we could have 25 people sign up for a side dish, dessert, etc. while the other 25 people pay, say like $5? I'm not sure if there would be different prices for one student vs one student + guest... what do you all think?? Any input is appreciated!!

Hey Sara,
Sounds like a great idea. I think that $5.00 per person would probably work out great. Just let us know what we need to do. Oh and by the way my wife and I are moving up there this Sunday, and we will be there until Wed, then we are going on our honeymoon to St. Maarten. If anyone would like to meet up Monday night for dinner or a drink just let us know. We would love to start getting to know some of you.
JK

Sara,
The $5.00 seems reasonable, but it should probably be per person, maybe making an exception for children under 12. You really shouldn't have all the burden of this. If you want, I could coordinate side dishes and desserts while you do the $5.00 bit since you live in KC. Just let me know what you need or want me to do.

YAHOOOEY!!!!!

We're finally in KC with the truck unloaded and the 'puter back online!!

So what's been hapening?

Anyone received their FA info yet? (not yet here)?

Sounds like plans are developing right along for the picnic...only 29 days and counting!!

Erica...sorry I didn't get the info on your move in until today, but if you still need help let me know.

Has everyone been in contact with their big sis/bro? If so what wonderful tidbits have they shared?

So many questions.....

Hey everybody! It's been awfully quiet around this thread.. I had to scroll down the page to even find it. :0) So, what's going on? Any FA news yet?

Also, I haven't heard from about half of you people yet about what you're bringing to the picnic. If you're having trouble deciding, do the payment option.
smile.gif
Right now, we have 7 desserts, 5 side dishes, and $30. These are going to be some smallllll hamburgers!

Hey everyone,
Sorry I haven't let anyone know about the picnic but my wife and I just got back from a trip to St. Martin. It was awsome, but anyway we will probably just send money or we will do money and food if need be. Well, was the FA info good news. I am about to go crazy wondering about mine. I am going to call first thing monday morning. Well, we look forward to meeting you guys. We got moved in before we left on our trip, but we flew back into Little Rock to pick up my car and a few other things. We will be back in KC probably around Wed. or Thurs. of this week. (26th or 27th). So if anyone wants to get together just give us a call at (501-352-2577) this is my cell number we will not have a phone there untill probably the 1st.
Jodie

Unfortunately, my wife and I are waiting until the last minute to arrive so we will not be able to attend the BBQ. We are coming from Salt Lake City and will be lucky to be able to leave SLC on August 5th - we'll take off by August 8th at the latest. Hope everyone has fun at the BBQ! I still have not received anything from financial aid, either. Hey - for those who are in KC... How's the heat and humidity?!?!? ~ Eric Hempel

There have been severe thunderstorms in KC yesterday and hopefully ending today. Other than that, it has been beautiful.
And I haven't received any FA award letter yet either.

SD,
Congratulations on your being accepted to UHS. I wish you all the luck in the world during your time there. I do have some bad news for you though. Spurrier will never beat Bobby in Tallahassee this year!
