The fin aid pkg that UIC gives us will allocate a certain amount of money for our living expenses. I believe it varies from year to year. One thing you want to look for is whether or not the allocation is for 9 months or 12 months. If it is for 9 months, then you may need to get extra money from your parents or budget accordingly.

Also, engineers actually has a good deal... paying ~$500/mo/person ($1000/mo was the total cost of the place.)

congrats everyone on interviews and acceptances! hope to see you all at Jak's Tap...

thanks JMB. i'm gonna have to see what UIC gives me.

i really want chicago...but i dont think the odds are very good. when i dropped off my site pref. and acceptance letter to the adcom office, the lady there said that the last time she checked, chicago was completely full. but there is some movement after may 15th, when people drop acceptances in favor of other schools.

when this happens, they consider petitions of people who did not get their first choice.

Oh she said it was definitely full? They were being vague earlier, so I was still holding onto a glimmer of hope. Oh well.

yup - a little less than $500/person. the guide at uic said that people tend to pay $1000/month/person 'on average in chicago' and the people on the tour that actually live in chicago were all confused.

Here's my dilemma:

one of my relatives has a condo on the lakefront, literally. and he offered that i can stay there during my medschool years, becuase he is only there for one to two days per week anyway. my extended family is very close and my family denounces dating as well, or anything related to girls. but i obviously like to have some fun, more than occasionally. however, im also very serious about studying, so i know when to play and when to work.

that being said, ive broken this down into pros and cons:

pros
no rent or utilities
awesome view of the lake and city of chicago
the building has a gym and pool
i can study on the beach during warm weather

cons
-My relative will have family over once or twice a month, and i may have nowhere quiet to study or relax, and he himself will be over at the condo every weekend on fridays and saturdays.
-It wont be my own place so I have to constantly be aware of keeping everything clean and tidy
-I cant come and go as I please, because I have to hang out with him, as he IS letting me stay there...I cant just use him or something without spending family time with him.
-Very risky bringing girls over, because of family.
-When I want to study with friends at the apt, I may not be able to, without invading privacy of my relative, when he's there.
-It's a long way from campus (half hour using public transportation), and i'd have to take 2 buses or the L train, so if im out studying late at night, its not safe coming back, and the bus may not run at that time either
-No other medstudents around me to keep me company or for moral support

Now it may seem like there are more cons, but it will save a fat sum of money if i didnt have to get my own apt, utilities, etc. and if i just suck it up and give up my freedom

I was wondering if any of you were in this position, what would you pick, and hopefully your reasons why as well. Thank you 🙂

ok this is a totally random question and congrats to all of you who have gotten in slash good luck to all of you waiting !
but my question is, i heard last year UIC couldnt fill all their spots, even after pulling people on the wait list, so they started re-interviewing rejected people.. does this have any truth to it ?
again just a rumor, but i was wondering if it was true !

I was one of the people with a June interview last season. I had not been previously rejected, rather I got a letter in March that they had not yet reviewed my file, but as I was qualified they promised to get to it eventually. I was offered the interview at the end of May. It turned out they had over-accepted by seven people, thinking more would drop out to accept other offers than actually did. They definitely did not have trouble filling the class.

anyone get the campus assignment letter? how long does this thing take to arrive usually? i'm tired of waiting!

Long time reader, first time poster. This is a great site!

I recently interviewed at UIC (about a week ago) and was curious about any changes on the status page going from "Evaluation not Complete Interview Scheduled for X Date" to something before "A Decision was made on X Date...". I've read through this thread and couldn't find anything about it so any input would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Edit: Stupid me, I missed it the first time around on page 9. Thanks anyway...

ok. i need more info. what neighborhood is this place in? very few places are 30 minutes away from anything else in chicago. for example, i live 5 miles away from where i work and it takes me 1 hour to get to work using public transit door to door. at night, it takes much longer since the trains and buses run less frequently. also, just because a condo is on the lakefront doesn't mean the neighborhood is nice and/or safe and/or fun to live in. i personally value my freedom too much to live in someone else's house for four years. it's just too much of an inconvenience. what's another $10k a year if you're already borrowing so much already for school?

Hey Tensyle,
I agree with eel800 that saving the money long-term may not be worth it for all those cons. And if you do decide to move in, I don't think that you should look at it as 4 years with him, you could live there for one semester or one year while you settle into school, get a grip on your finances, and size up other living opportunities, too.
Good luck.

Soon and Eel:

Thanks so much for the comments. The place is a high-rise building right across Navy Pier. its very safe and its a pretty posh area. Since my family is very close knit, I have to find a way to politely decline, and this is gonna cause much commotion because of the politics involved. But primarily, they will say that I will save a lot of money, but the way I look at it, I honestly need a place to go that's my own after a hard day's studying.

Also, since its by navy pier, i'll have to take 2 buses, and its about 40-45 mins from the campus - i might as well commute from the suburbs for that, right?

Once again thanks for your input!!

Oh, and are any of you looking for apartment mates starting in the fall? :-D

Hi Tensyle

Congrats on the acceptance! It seems like you got a chicago spot recently! Nice! How?? Isn't the chicago campus closed?

I'll worry about this after the interview but if you have a trick up your sleeve let me know, thanks!

ooh hahaha no Frank, that was just me speculating that IF i got the chitown campus, I was thinking about where I could live, thats all. sorry it wasnt clear. There's no guarantee thats where I'll be. I've been looking at housing options at all four campuses, and i was trying to decide what i would do if i stayed in chicago...who knows, maybe they will put me in chicago after May 15th, when apparantly they start moving people depending upon the order in which they receive requests from accepted students. but yes, you'r eright....as far as i know, chicago is closed.

goodluck on your interview man! :luck::hardy:

Has anyone on here interviewed at Rockford? I went through the interview feedback and didn't find much. I know its one group interview (2 faculty/1 student) opposed to Chicago's one-on-one interviews... but I was just wondering what it was like this year and how long the interview day actually lasted. Thanks!

I have an interview scheduled at Rockford coming up soon and so this is something I would also like to know more on. (bump)

Hey, I interviewed at Rockford. I had an afternoon session. I think the day started at 1:00pm. (I got there at 12:30). There's no lunch FYI- there's a cafeteria where you can buy food if you want, but I think Chicago gives you lunch so I wasn't sure what to expect. We met with this dean and this other lady for half an hour. Then we went on a tour for half an hour- though this takes much less time. At 2pm the first interviews started. It's two faculty and one M4- it's a lot less intimidating than it sounds and I think the presence of the M4 helps a lot. Interviews are half an hour with 15 min for them to talk after you leave- so that's 45 min. total. They had three groups of interviewers and there were 12 of us that day so that meant four different time slots. Hopefully you're not last because then you're sitting there for 2h15min waiting for everyone else to finish before your turn. So the length of the day depends a lot on that- because you can leave once you've interviewed. Overall it's really short and pretty low-key. Good luck! 👍

anyone interviewing tomorrow in Chicago? any last minute advice?

Please could you tell us about what thecampus, the facilities, surroundng area, nightlife etc are like? And have thy built they' re new building yet?

The campus is quite different than most medical schools I've seen. It's basically this big building with a cafeteria, library, administration offices, big auditorium for lecture, and that's about it. There is no clinic or hospital connected to this building. I guess you just drive around to various hospitals etc.- some of the M2s said they go as far as 40 minutes away, so it sounds like you cover a pretty big area, which could be nice in that you get a diverse array of clinical experiences. Previous threads also talk about the greater role med students play at this campus. This med school building is pretty big though with couches and sitting areas so I imagine people congregate there. It's also where the school of nursing (I think) and various other schools (Pharmacy?) are located. They're renovating this building and I think the M2 said it'd be done in 2010. they had pics up of the design and it looks nice. As for nightlife, the M2s did not sugarcoat anything- the town's pretty dead as far as nightlife goes. I guess Rockford used to be a big manufacturing center but with outsourcing there's a lot of poverty. It's really just your typical suburban town. The M2 did point out that his enjoyment comes more from the people you're around than the places you go- which I completely agree with, and they make a point of talking about how Chicago, Madison, and Milwaukee are within driving distance. I think I'd be ok there, but of course I prefer Chicago- like everyone else in the world. 😛

GASP!!! tensyle..u go to UIC??? 😱

so do i!...and kryptondoc....i wonder if i've seen you on campus....

GASP!!!

I have an upcoming interview at the Chicago campus and was wondering where people stayed during their visit to the chicago campus. Any suggestions on hotels nearby that are close or provide shuttle service would be nice.
Secondly, which airport would i be flying into, Ohare or MDW?
thanks in advance for your help.

HAHAH yes I just graduated from UIC. I'm sure we know (or know of) eachother, but just dont know it yet LOL. Hope ur not a certain person I'm thinking about...cuz if you are, you should think twice about coming to Jak's Tap next weekend

haha im just kidding :meanie:

So I sent my application into UIC in September, and I never heard anything back from them... so after waiting for too long I finally get around to calling them today

It turns out they mailed me an interview request way back in October, but I never received it. I also never received an email about it... which I have been told other people have received.

It turns out the earliest they can interview me is on April 17th, which is sooooo late into the admissions process. I would love to go to UIC (regardless of campus) but now I know the odds aren't as good now as they would have been when I would have originally interviewed.

My premed advisor assures me that they still make acceptance offers all the way through the end of April, and that I'm not just interviewing for a spot on an alternate list... but I'm still uncomfortable about the whole thing.

Anyway, when is the latest any of you have heard that a student has been accepted into UIC? Have you heard about people that have been accepted as late in the process as me?

I could have gone back and read every reply, but I got lazy and just decided to post... plus I obviously don't like reading about all these people who have already been accepted.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated

There is always a lot of movement towards the end, with a shuffling of students withdrawing their acceptances. Unless you have an acceptance to a school you'd rather go to over UIC, I think you're pretty much obligated to go to that interview. That's my opinion anyway.

If you are a strong enough candidate, they'll just bump you to the top of the list. :luck:

uic doesn't do e-mail notifications for interviews - they change the status on your info page. it's a pretty annoying way of doing things.

my old roommate said they contacted him by email.

Wow - that's the first I've heard of an emailed interview invite from UIC. I have some friends who applied last year, and one of them was in your same position. They never received the letter, and didn't realize they were supposed to check on their status page for an invite. They were invited in the fall, but didn't find out about it until March or April. However, they declined the invite, so I don't know how they would have fared.

Anyway, I think that you've still got a great chance of getting into UIC - especially since you were an early invite. They obviously really liked your app. However, your chance of getting into the Chicago campus right off the bat is pretty minimal, but you might get in later on after May. However, since you said you'd be happy going to one of the other campuses, you're in a great position. Just go to the interview and do your best. I think things will turn out well. :luck:

However, since you said you'd be happy going to one of the other campuses, you're in a great position.

Honestly, I'd rather not go to the Chicago campus. I was born and raised in central Illinois, and I go to UIUC right now. As much as I hate the flat and the cornfields, I think the best adjustment into med school for me, would be to go to a place where I'm already familiar and not make an adjustment to med school and an adjustment to a new location.

I'm familiar with the area, and I have friends that are here (including a girlfriend who is going to be here for her senior year). So I'm not even looking at going to the Chicago campus. Plus, I'm starting to get into the cycling community here, and while I know my time is going to be VERY limited... it would be nice to be able to meet up with some people that I already know and do a 30 mile bike ride on occasional weekends.

Essentially, I grew up wanting to go into the University of Illinois system, and I want to stay in that system for medical school as well.

private suites right in the graduate student dorm (SSR) and cheaper than many hotels

Closest hotel on the list is the Marriot
http://uillinoismedcenter.org/content.cfm/accomodations

Either airport is fine so go with the cheapest flight. Both have CTA lines that will take you into the city for $2.00.

HAHAHHAHA okay they are the furthest thing from suites - trust me, ive been there countless times...but yes, it is cheaper. that place is clean, but it smells bad - but since its for one night, you'll be fine.

oh man when do these site preference cards usually come back to us?

Thank you Zipmedic and Pheonix for the advice.

oh man when do these site preference cards usually come back to us?

when i called on thursday, they said they had not been mailed out yet....the lady talked to me on the fone for like 5 minutes all so that she could confirm that my check and acceptance letter and site preference card were turned in....I KNOW THEY WERE TURNED IN!!! i wish they'd tell us what they were doing before they started asking you for information making it seem like they were going to tell you what you wanted to hear.....i thought she'd tell me where i'd been assigned...5 minutes later..yes we have your check...me:😱....

annnnnnnnywayyys.....they'll be mailed out next week she said....or may be she was just trying to mess with me for no reason...

Ok thanks for going thru that and posting here. LOL I think that's the same lady I talked to on the phone when I called to find out when the decisions were going to be sent out. I feel your pain!

hey i got a question for everyone...

so has anyone started filling out their immunization forms? it asks for UIN and says (find in admission letter) right next to it and when I look in the admission letter, there is no such thing! I already have a UIN because im a UIC student but did other people who didn't go to UIC as their undergrad get a UIN assignment in their acceptance letter? if not then how the heck do we fill out this immunization form??

😱 I found this thread on the third page ! Bump

hey...i actually got my interview invite on Aug. 31st through snail mail...never received an email or anything. I received my email after I called and scheduled my interview. my other friend who interviewed in december got an invitation through email though. pretty weird. my decision was through the mail tho. anyway, here's a positive way to look at it...the facilities in peoria and rockford are probably A LOT better than the facilities in the chicago campus (they are the worst of any medical campus i've interviewed at). It seems as if they havent renovated that place since 1920. they even teach histo through the microscope and overhead projection as opposed to electronical slides

For the people who did interview at Rockford and Peoria...How are the facilities there? Are they more advanced than the ones at the Chicago campus especially when dealing with the labs, etc..? Thanks!

the medstudent who interviewed me at chicago campus told me that although they use microscopes for histo slides, we actually can check out the microscopes and a whole set of slides from the lab, and take it to our home/apartment so we can study there on our own...we dont have to come to lab to look at the slides, etc. just an fyi 🙂

hey zipmedic...may i ask why your name is black and in a different font? i wanna do that! i bet its somethign that only moderators or ppl with insane amounts of posts get...
