I think the interview was good. But UIC was a little unorganized. The interviewers were late or didnt show up so they got students to do the interviews. Only admin ppl talked to us and they didnt know much about the curriculum so they had to find a student to answer the questions. It was just a little weird.

For histology at other 21st century medical schools they teach histology through electronic slides which you can actually look at at any computer around the world because everything is electronical. Now imagine that vs having to carry your 30lb light microscope with you everywhere you go . its just not convenient for studying purposes to carry a light microscope with you everywhere as opposed to just flipping out your laptop. Im not trying to bash UIC...they just need to catch up with the rest of the medical school and fix their facilities...they're horrible 👎 especially for 25K (for in state) a year!

I also thought it was funny how they have people type up transcripts of lectures but don't have podcasts of the lectures. How difficult could that possibly be? I'm sure a given class would be willing to throw in $5 each to buy that technology.

Yeah, that was one thing that disappointed me a bit, but I do try to keep it in perspective - it's mainly just for histology, right? UIC and Tulane (I think, which costs over $40k) still use microscopes and slides, while I believe most schools have switched over to computerized electronic slides for three cited reasons: 1) it facilitates students discussing slides and learning together (able to point to the screen easily and discuss); 2) that most hospitals use electronic slides these days; and 3) easier to review/study at home, or anywhere, for that matter. Hopefully UIC will get on board soon and replace the microscopes, or at least post a database of slides to learn from at home. For some reason I thought they had that already, but I guess I was thinking of somewhere else.

I could be wrong, but I think I remember asking my tour guide about that, and she said that some teachers weren't comfortable with being taped. *shrug*

i find it funny how this thread started out as a pre interview thread and now it has slowly turned into a post acceptance thread...i like it tho..now that i'm part of the post acceptance batch! haha 😀

The best part is how free-flowing discussion has become, which allows us to really discuss instead of doing the neurotic pre-med thing that was going on the first 6 pages.

the facilities at UIC are fine. 25k is chump change compared to loyola, rush, northwstern, u of c, and even CCOM.

plus, uic has started using electronic slides this year from what i hear.

really? who did you hear this from? perhaps some of the other campuses? may be not chicago? if they did then thats awesome! i sure hope they go this way because most students would LOVE to have a database full of histology slides rather than carrying around a big *** light microscope!

I agree that UIC is a better deal, but when you say "chump change," it sounds like there's a huge difference. If you scroll back a couple of pages, you'll see where I compare the tuition and fees at UIC (listed as around $25,000 in tuition) to Loyola (listed as around $37,000 in tuition), and there's only actually a $20,000 difference over the four years. It's not the $50,000 I first thought it was from just looking at the listed tuition. So while UIC is definitely a better deal, it's not "chump change." I'm just pointing this out because I'd really hate to not have realized that UIC was leaving off two $9,000 summer tuition charges and very high fees as compared to other schools. Ok, end of tuition rant.

Sounds great - I guess my tour guide (fourth year med student) didn't know that. And actually, my student interviewer didn't either. I'd asked her about that during my interview, and she didn't mention anything about switching over to electronic slides. Then again, it's probably not that big of a deal to current med students in the scheme of things.

just wanted to offer another perspective: imho, i don't think its really a big deal whether or not uic has slides online. having taken med histo at another school that had a very comprehensive online slide database, i still found myself wanting to use the microscope, b/c its more of the process/thinking you are learning rather than trying to memorize what cells/structures you are identifying. so, if anything, the online slides were more of an aid than a primary resource for studying.

additionally... while other schools have slides posted online, many are not virtual slides. virtual slides allow you to mimic what you would do on the microscope. with that, there is a large collection of online links to histo websites that are publicly accessible and that were also recommended by my histo profs. you can always use these to supplement your learning. i.e. urbana has some virtual slides.

so, while it would be nice... i don't think its that big of a deal since there are already several resources available to us. enough of my babble, carry on 😛

haha ccom (riz)....im sorry but they haven't....and 25K is cheap compared to a private a school. that is what makes UIC such a competitive school even though the facilities are NOT fine (i don't know why you would think that if you go to CCOM). but for OOS applicants its somewhere b/w 40-50K and compared to other public schools 25K is pretty pricey. plus my student interviewer said they would be raising to tuition soon because the state of Illinois isn't funding them as much anymore. BUT i guess you wouldn't have to worry about things like that at CCOM. 🙂

NEway i think UIC is an amazing school! :hardy:...there are a lot of things that you could only get at UIC compared to other schools (rotations, location). I was just trying to make a comparison with tuition and facilities.

haha ccom (riz)....im sorry but they haven't....

They haven't what? Switched to electronic slides? UIC? Or CCOM? I fear I'm not following you.

and 25K is cheap compared to a private a school.

Just make sure you're comparing apples to apples. If you're talking tuition alone, it's $25,500/year plus around $10k each for two summers. That makes tuition at UIC really $30,000/year over four years. And I agree the OOS charges are astronomical.

lol i was just joking with ccom...me and him are really good friends. we were just messing around with eachother.

uic hasnt switched to electronic slides.
i dont know how they teach it CCOM

wow...thats crazy expensive. and you can't become an IL resident unless you work in the area for a year prior to starting school right? and do all that DMV stuff, voter registration, etc....

alright guys,

after arguing with the stunner doc , i actually called a friend of mine at UIC - this is the verdict :

* UIC is not planning on upgrading to electronic slides, they are keeping their age old technology - this is what i was told on the tour, but they were referring to their URBANA and peoria/rockford tracks.Even on those tracks, i guess they arent updating in time for this graduating class, but not until after we will be done - there is some budget stuff that got clogged up.

sorry for the misinformation all, i got the info a while ago and stuff has changed. and one thing i will agree with is UIC's facilities are not that hot. in any case, it is still a good school.

I also thought it was funny how they have people type up transcripts of lectures but don't have podcasts of the lectures. How difficult could that possibly be? I'm sure a given class would be willing to throw in $5 each to buy that technology.

My tourguide at Rockford told me they have podcasts at that location. One more perk over Chicago. 🙂

im from the DG area...is it recommended I have a car if i go to peoria or rockford? It will be helpful coming home here and there, plus considering that the two campuses are in suburban locations, will it be beneficial to have a car? Or is public transportation enough?

also, if anyone has any words on the rockford or peoria facilities and overall feel to the campuses, im sure more than one person on here woudl appreciate it! 😀

Anybody know when the financial aid forms usually get updated.. they are still saying 2007-2008 shouldn't the ones we need to fill out be 2008-2009? Thanks in advance

i found this on page 3 😱 donde esta el espirito de UIC?

its 7pm, feb 16th, Jak's Tap. I'm gonna try reeely hard to make it. please everyone do the same 🙂

Have you folks figured out how to check the status of your application on the new web format? It only reroutes the user to theAMCAS site to check the status of their primary. It sounds like many of you have already been accepted and, therefore, have little need to check your status, but anyone who has figured this out would be nice to hear from. I know that on the 21st of this month the question will be raised, so I am just begin proactive about it (and, admittedly, obsessive).

When did you interview? I am also waiting for Feb 21st.
I think you can just go to the this website directly
https://mercury.comd.uic.edu/appstat/index.jsp

without even going through the new website. I tried going through it i couldn't find anything.

2/4, you? Also, is the bar invitation only extended to those who have been accepted, or can those who hope to be accepted attend? I guess its not like you can keep me out of the bar though 🙂

i think its open to everyone. i'm bringing a couple friends, hope that is okay!

also... track assignments have arrived! i got urbana/peoria, which i ranked after chicago.

ndfrspd, i'm curious b/c you gave them your preference card and your petition letter, did you get chicago?

2/8 and i think the bar invitation is for everyone.

did you have rockford before peoria or was peoria ur second pick?

i ranked peoria over rockford.... it was a tough call, but peoria has a good rad dept and its something i'm interested in. also, many of my friends who were in the UPR track did not have a difficult time switching to a different UPR site if they changed their mind later.

Did anybody but Ndfr.Spd send in an appeals letter, I just got my assignment letter today, and I got urbana/rockford which I ranked after Chicago.

All right well I'm gonna finish that appeals letter :OP, guess I should have turned it in this week instead of hoping the letter was different.

Also did anybody else pick Rockford site second?

Don't get me wrong, I'm totally psyched to be going to med school and can't wait to start regardless of where I end up. Just didn't wanna end on a downer haha.

I've basically setup Chicago so well that I just don't wanna let go yet but its med school, how can you be bummed right. 😀

I'm out of town so I'm going to have to wait to see my site assignment. Did anyone rank Urbana second? If so, did you get it?

I'm not sure if you have a good chance of getting urbana...Urbana is only for students who have been accepted into MD/PhD...otherwise its even more difficult to get into than Chicago at this point. From what i've heard there are something like 5 to 10 urbana spots for regular MD students.

And to everyone that thinks i sent in a petition letter with my card, i didn't. Im not sure where I said it or if i said it without my intent but i dind't send in a petition letter wiht my campus assignment card. Chicago was my first choice and Urbana/rockford was my second choice cause its closest to my house and i've heard great thigns about it.

I got urbana/rockford...a little bummed but its all good...i'm going to medschool and thats all that counts!!! besides urbana has a bunch of undergrads..at least if we ever wanted to party and have fun it wont be that bad for the first year...haha

guys i didnt receive my site preference card...waht did the envelope look like? also, was it updated on your UIC app status page?

thank you!

Nope no update.. just a regular envelope with a single piece of paper that said your site assignment... they say to give it 2 weeks and call and they'll send you another one I believe...

So I just got my site assignment today, and strangely enough, it's for the Chicago track. My acceptance forms arrived at UIC last Tuesday, February 5. I'm pretty surprised, but I won't kick a gift horse in the mouth.

hey congrats!!!!!:hardy:🙂:clap: i would love to be in your shoes right now. it makes me wonder if people have started withdrawing from UIC and chicago spots are opening up or if they have actually saved a few chicago spots for special people like you!

in any case, i will be writing my petition letter this weekend, so hopefully i'll eventually end up with chicago too 😳+pity+

Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't say I'm not jealous, but I am very happy for you, and maybe I'll see you there.

Between me and JMB, one of these appeals has to work out. +pity+sigh hahaha....

talk about lucky!! congrats on the chicago campus!!! i gotta say i'm jealous!!! 😱

hey congrats! I got my letter today - I got assigned to Urbana/Rockford track, which was my second choice, after Chicago of course.

Oh well, I'm gonna try an appeal...

I hope to see the majority of you guys tomorrow...hey how am i supposed to know where the SDNers are? I'm gonna be a little late...i'll proally show around 8pm...

Out of curiosity...For those that will be appealing to get the Chicago campus, what are some of the reasons you will be giving in your letter?
