does UMDNJ take FOREVER to send out secondaries?
i added them to my aacomas about a week ago
and still no email or anything yet
can i just fill out the secondary and send it to them?
or should i call them and ask?

They'll be making a decision on me tomorrow..... So nervous...

Anyone know what time their meeting usually ends and about what time I should be receiving a call from them?

thanks!

they called me around 3:30 with my acceptance, and supposedly the adcom met around 2:00 last time. goodluck!!

Good luck today everyone who is waiting to hear!! I know I'll be keeping my phone very close to me.😀
:luck::luck:!!!

I just interviewed on Wednesday and they said that they have around 50 applicants to review. So basically, there's a chance that phone calls won't happen until Monday.

Good luck!

just got the call!! I'm in!! keep your phones on! good luck everyone!!!

Secondary can be downloaded off the website.

/pokes phone .. ring please?

are they sending out interview invites today too? what are the avg gpa/mcats that they are looking for? how about for OOS applicants? i've been complete for a month now and still no word!

I just got the call a few minutes ago for the acceptance!: I'm officially going to be a doctor!!! Good luck to everyone!! I don't know how long into the evening they are calling, but I didn't expect to get one after 530. I just interviewed on Monday. So I don't know if they are going by days, but that's just a bit of info if you wanted to know. They will probably be calling some people on Monday too. Good luck!!!

congrats to everyone... i am way behind but looking forward getting through the process...

from what my third year friends at umdnj told me, their class kicked butt in the USMLE and COMPLEX. i think it will be even better this year and next.. too many motivated students... 😍

I wanna be part of that club !!

I got in! yay!

TCNJ, you were sooo right about the time of the phone call. Paul called me exactly at 3:30pm.

I look forward to seeing you guys soon!

And thanks all for your help with my questions

I wonder if they got around to calling everyone that was accepted or if they still have a few people left to call on Monday.

Got my phone call this morning (turns out they still had people to call on Monday). :hardy:

From these people who are getting calls from UMDNJ-SOM...do they call everyone, regardless of the decision they make on your application? I interviewed October 12 and haven't heard back from the school yet (I expected a call Friday, but then thought maybe today, but still no word at nearly 3pm). Does anybody know more about this?

i called them at 1pm est and said they were still in the process of calling people. I asked the lady how much longer they would be calling for and she said she had no idea...

do they constantly send out interview invites or at specific times like after a review?

I'm still in the dark! I called them this morning and they said that they just sent out letters today, but they said nothing about phone calls. Is it possible that they won't call if you're accepted?

I also interviewed and am still waiting for something. From my past experience last year, I received a letter telling me I was wait listed, but this was also much later than this year (it was in Feb). I know that they dont PROMISE a phone call to let you know your accepted, so I guess its not time to give up hope just yet..
best of luck to everyone!

well I found out that I was waitlisted again. Hopefully I can retake the MCAT in Jan. and pull my score up enough to help me out...
good luck everyone else!!

hi guys
i am not really familiar with the DO schools yet, i havent done enough research, but is UMD-NJ considered one of the good schools?

if so, whats their average MCAT/GPA
or those who already got in, could you please share?
thanks a lot

Well, i had a 28P/3.5gpa (NJ resident).
I know UMDNJ-SOM has the highest, or one of the highest mcat/gpa averages compared to other DO schools (27MCAT/3.4GPA) and is much more selective (only 108 students) than others.

At least in SDN's past threads, most students rank UMDNJ-SOM as top 5. (Their Geriatrics program is ranked #7 in US NEWS amongst both allopathic and osteopathic schools, which is pretty sweet. I'm not too interested in geriatrics though haha)

I don't think numbers solely dictate how good the school is, but I think it does show the aptitude of the class to some level. Then again, PCOM has avg 24MCAT/3.3 GPA, yet is still considered by many as being higher 'ranked' than UMDNJ-SOM.

Therefore, numbers dont necessarily correlate to how good the school is. I think it is rather based on how long the school has been around (PCOM: +100 years, UMDNJ-SOM: +30 years), showing the school's ability to produce competent doctors.

[BTW, i was just comparing UMDNJ-SOM and PCOM because i'm trying to decide between the two schools myself- not starting up anything]

Maybe others can better answer your question.

i just looked at a match list, and correct me if i am wrong, bcz im making a similar decision, but UMD-NJ doesnt seem to have a variety of specialties

i barely saw anyhting besides FM and pediatrics

what do u think

Well, I do know UMDNJ-SOM really focuses on producing primary care physicians (more than other DO schools). With that said, however, previous year's matches does look more diverse with regards to fields of residency.

It is probably because last year's graduates were more interested in FM and pediatrics to begin with, rather than their inability to be placed in another field.

I'm hoping that someone actually in UMDNJ-SOM currently can elaborate.

I would be careful with how you interpret match lists. For schools with smaller classes, such as UMDNJ-SOM, you are going to get less people going into everything. Besides, if you have an idea of what you want to specialize in (which could change while you are in school mind you), it's not like going to a particular school will mean you can't work in that field.

The match list does not reflect what the school does. While many of the students want to go into primary care, they can go into any specialty they want. Members of my class want to go into FM, EM, Path, Onc, Surg, Hem, Ger, etc, etc.

The school does not choose the specialties, the students do. The school provides you with rotations that you need in addition to time to do elective rotations. Unlike some other schools, you do not have to set them up yourself, they are set up for you.

"The following specialty areas offer clinical instruction in the third year: Family Medicine, General Internal Medicine, Obstetric / Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Geriatrics, Radiology, Surgery and Medicine Selective or Elective. Basic procedures are demonstrated and practiced by students in each of these areas. Students learn about the standard operating procedures of the hospital and office practice. "

"The following specialty areas offer clinical instruction in the fourth year: family medicine, emergency medicine, surgery, and medicine specialties. Students have the opportunity for subspecialty experiences in cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general internal medicine, geriatrics, hematology/oncology, infectious diseases, nephrology, neurology, pulmonary, intensive care, and rheumatology. A course description of each of these subspecialty experiences is included in the Handbook. A primary purpose of instruction in this year is to help the fourth-year student apply the didactic background and preliminary clinical training to more intensive clinical experiences."

Now, while the class size is currently 108 this is not the number of people they accept. We receive about 3500 applications per year and interview about 500 people (I am not in admissions so I am not sure of the exact numbers but these are close). Out of those interviewed, about 250 are accepted, again I am not sure of the real number.

In addition, over the next several years, the school is going to expand its class size to 150. They are in the process of getting it approved by COCA.

I am not sure what you mean by not having alot of specialties. Our students have a number of electives where they can do rotations in specialties of thier choices both in 3rd and 4th year. Our students match in a variety of specialties....pathology in the last few years where students went to NYU, Cornell, Columbia, Indiana University.
Some in surgery have gone to Osteopathic programs but also Baylor, UTSA, UT Houston.
Internal Medicine have gone to such programs as UTDallas,UT houston, Jefferson, several New York schools, and Duke.Basically our students are only limited by thier own imaginations. If they have the smarts..they can go where they want to.

great
thanks a lot guys
ill keep u updated as more interviews come

hey guys

how long (after the school recieve the secondary app.) does it take to hear back from them

and do they review applications based on the order in which they were recieved, or in terms of grades and other info they got from part 1

thanks a lot

I got my secondary on monday and sent it out by mail on tuesday.
I hope to hear something within the next couple of weeks at least.

my friend who goes to the school told me that they are only taking 110 or less students for 2008 class

do you guys know how expensive it is to live in the area near school?
anybody has a rough estimate

thnx

cost around $600-800 for a single bed apt. there are plenty of places within 10mins of the school (many on the same street). It may be even cheaper if you can rent a home with couple of people; even the condo prices within the neighborhood are reasonably priced ($160K) and in good areas.

that change to 150 students is probably going to happen over a decade. This is a solid school and expanding 50% in one year wouldnt be prudent and they understand that. Look for next years class to remain at 108 or increase by at max 5-10 students.

A few things have to happen before we increase to 150 students:

#1. COCA approval
#2. Expand the current building. which is being designed.

they are going to increase the number of students each year a few at a time.

thanks txkiteboarder
how about food/books
like what is a reasonable amount you need a month to live a decent life, not too luxurious

Does UMDNJ-SOM set up the electives for the students as well when you say "unlike some other schools, you do not have to se them up yourself, they are set up for you"? Or are you referring to the core rotations?

heyyy people
this thread is dead
we have to keep it alive

the school called me today and informed that my app. is complete and is currently under review for an interview score

any ideas how long that takes?

thnx

hey farookiano,
within a week of my file being complete i received a call inviting me to interview...hope that helps.

ok thanks a lot
hopefully sometime next week ill get a call

when is your interview?
was it close to the date of their call or late?

thanks a lot

my interview was on friday the 9th...they called me the friday before and gave me the option of interviewing on tuesday, thursday, or friday. I chose friday so that i could prepare properly. So, the turn around from my file being complete and the invite was extremely fast. Good luck to you!!

are you guys jersey residents? I've been complete for a couple weeks now and I have yet to hear anything....getting anxious!

i am a NY resident

i have been complete since this past friday only
im expecting a call today (Sunday) lol
i dont know, but hopefully they will call soon, within a week or 2

I called last Thursday and they said they literally finished my file that afternoon as I called to check on my status. Apparently they didn't have my composite letter of recommendation yet, which is weird, because it was supposed to be sent out more than 2 months ago from my college. I just called back and they were going to check for me. I'm worried. All the scenarios of that composite letter getting lost somewhere is scaring me. Keep me updated if people get interview calls this week, because she said they should call me by sometime this week if they have my composite letter.
