UMDNJ Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
To those of you that have heard back from UMDNJ-SOM...waitlist or acceptance...how did they notify you? Phone call? Email? Letter?

How long did it take for them to answer you after the adcom meeting?

Thanks!

Phone call on Friday at 3:30pm of my acceptance. (back in october)

They call the 3rd Friday afternoon of each month. Or start to call 3rd fridays at least. (admissions meet 3rd thursday of every month)

good luck guys.

hopefully i'll see you guys around next year

Since UMDNJ has both DO and MD schools, would both programs know if you have applied to both? Anyone know?

A good friend of mine got a phone call a couple nights ago with the acceptance message. so, i guess alot of you will here from them soon.

My husband got the call today for an interview! Woo hoo!! Does anyone know what days of the week they schedule them for?

Thanks! A Friday would actually be great! Since he was interviewing he wasn't able to call and schedule yet and because he didn't have our calendar on him. I wonder when their semester ends. She said they would like to get him in to interview before the end of the semester which at our school is pretty soon. I'm so excited you would think I had gotten the interview. 😀

I just now received my secondary invite from UMDNJ, and it has been about 1.5 months since I sumbitted my primary. Do you think I should submit it or am I better off saving 90 dollars at this stage of the game?

Is anyone waiting for their acceptance/rejection response on the 21st of December? This is gonna be the longest month of my life. Its hard taking all these finals without knowing whether they are going to matter. We need to start a support group for people waiting for the UMDNJ SOM committee's infamous "3rd week of the month" meeting.

Anyone else placed on pre-interview "hold?" Does this translate to "We are delaying your rejection," "We are going to eventually interview you for the waitlist," or "You still have a legitimate chance of gaining entrance?"

How much is the deposit?

The deposit is 185 bones. Very reasonable compared to some of the other DO schools. 👍

Wow that's not bad at all. You have it good with your acceptances to UMDNJ and TCOM. 😀 👍

I know! Thank goodness, because I'm broke from the rest of the application process.😉

Yeah my husband's just about done with the whole interviewing thing so it's hard to imagine going on as many as you did. What were your impressions of UMDNJ when you interviewed? I mean obviously pretty good but I was just wondering because I will be living vicariously through my husband.

I really enjoyed my visit to UMDNJ. Everyone I interacted with was very friendly and appeared genuinely interested in me and my experiences. I like that's it's a small class with lots of research opportunities (which is what I'm currently doing and would like to continue), and that they have their own teaching hospitals. From everyone I've talked to/emailed, it seems like you get a great clinical education at UMDNJ. Finally, being a state school, it's hard to pass up the low tuition. However, I will say that the interview day was shorter and a bit less comprehensive than many of the other interviews I went on. I think this makes it a little harder to form a concrete opinion of the school and may require a little more personal research. Although, the interview itself was essentially the same as other schools. On a personal note, moving from NYC to South Jersey would be an easier transition than moving from NYC to TX. Though, I realize Stratford is suburban and not NYC (which is not a bad thing IMHO). I also have friends in Philadelphia I can harass. Likewise, I like to bowl and there is a bowling alley next to campus, and a Wegmans grocery store in Cherry Hill (I love Wegmans!!!)

Did your husband interview yet?

does anyone know if OOS students can get IS tuition the 1st year?
i know in the past this was done, but i thought i heard a rumor that this would be changing? i just called the admissions office and was told that OOS students can get IS tuition the first year. is this correct? (not that i'm complaining, i'd love to get it the first year 😀)

thanks!

I have no clue but that would be sweet! My husband is interviewing this week. I'm interested to hear what he thinks about it. Is the drive from the Philly airport to the school bad? He won't be getting in until 1 in the morning and I'm kind of worried about him making that drive so late. :scared:

I've never seen nor been in a Wegman's so I don't know what I'm missing. Wal-mart all the way for me baby! 🙄 Texas is definitely a different world. I have never experienced pride in one's state more than here. Of course we've never lived in the northeast so I think that would be quite a change as well. I actually had a dream last night that UMDNJ gave me an interview for 2/5 and you were going over the interview info with me. Oh yeah and kicia was there too along with other SDN members. Think I might have a little too much time on my hands? On another note, what is the best way to contact someone at the school? I e-mailed Lora Donia about the math requirements on 11/16 and haven't heard anything back yet. I know they're bogged down but it seems like it wouldn't take nearly that long. Should I just call her or is there someone else I should e-mail or call?

hey
do you guys know about what percent of interviewes get accepted?
and do they call everyone tomorrow, or just those who got accepted?

thanks
good luck to all of us

I actually don't know but is tomorrow the day they're supposed to be calling?

Easy drive, as I did it at midnight and there was no traffic, just snow.

Just don't go with mapquest, I stayed at the Hampton Inn(which I should have called rather than mapquested it).

It was a great school, lots of diversity(which was refreshing), very low key, a family environment due to the small class size. I'm sure your husband will love the interview.

I'm pretty sure they said they meet every third Friday of the month, and I'm also pretty sure the interviewer and others told me I'd get a call around the 21st, which is Friday. So I'm guessing we're gonna get the call on Friday. I'm really nervous. Anyway else waiting for the call this week?

ya they are meeting Friday
but do they call everyone or just those who got accepted?
and
anyone knows ~ what % of interviewes get in

I'm getting really nervous now... By this time tomorrow night, I will know if I am going to UMDNJ SOM for the next 4 years of my life... GAHHHHHH! NERVOUS!

They start calling at 3:30pm. You can start your countdown... now!.. haha
Good luck!

Do they call accepted, rejected, and waitlisted people altogether? Or just accepted? And also, sometimes they don't get to everyone on the Friday. Do they go in order of when your interview was? If so, that's good for me. I was interviewed on the 4th week of November, which is like, the 1st week of their interviewing cycle I guess. Jeez, I'm so nervous. I could barely sleep last night. And when I was asleep, I had dreams about it. These are going to be the longest 4-5 hours of my life.

*plays 24 tv show clock sound*

I highly doubt that they would call the waitlisted or rejected people. Most of the schools I know of just send letters to those people. It seems like a waste of time and an uncomfortable situation to call people and tell them they've been rejected. If you get a call, I would say you can rest assured you've been accepted. :luck:

My husband was accepted!! He's 3 for 3.

Does anyone know what gpa/mcat scores the admissions are looking for? (esp for OOS applicants?) i was complete back in september and I haven't heard anything from them since...

it has the second highest gpa and mcat scores of all osteo schools. I cant remember the specifics. there was link on some prof's website.

from what i understand after talking to admissions people is that OOS policy is being discussed. I think they have a huge preference for people of NJ. You get extra points in your formula for interview and admissions.

PleaseAcceptMe7 is officially IN

All those who got accepted and are pretty positive about coming to the school, message me. I'm gonna start a UMDNJ Class of 2012 Group on Facebook.

I can't say what they're looking for exactly but my husband has a 28 MCAT and around a 3.4-3.5 sGPA and 3.2-3.3 overall. We are OOS.

UMDNJ is a good school and congrats to all those getting acceptances today! Myself, I could not bring myself to live in that hell hole they call New Jersey!!!:meanie:

do they also call on monday? also is there a certain order they call in?

its kind of funny that you live in Idaho and call NJ a hell hole. I have been living in the area and it is perfectly fine. NJ gets a bad reputation from the New Yorkers but the school is in the south jersey. Totally different ball game.

Idaho has Boise State, which gave us one of the greatest moments in oklahoma football history. So they've got to get credit for that.

I knew I would get flack from someone about that ! However, I am not speaking without basis... I lived on the east coast for many years in Connecticut (that's why I'm an avid New England Patriots fan!) and really dont like it especially NYC and New Jersey because of the congestion. Idaho is a really beautiful state but I will be the first to admit it is lame... good thing I am moving to Texas in a few months!!!

Again, you probably havent been in south jersey area near philly then because it is a great place to live with tons of good neighborhoods. NJ on NYC is totally different on philly side.

So you hate NJ because of congestion but what about boston? Dont they have alot of traffic problems? I always hear about it from friend who move out from that area.

I have to give it Idaho for beating OU. Dang, that was a great game. Its weird but much as we dislike OU, it is totally opposite for OSU. I always they put out a great team.

all the major metroplex in TX have congestion issues not to mention smog.

They told me they look to interview those with a 27 MCAT/3.5 GPA. I'm sure that as long as you are in that range, whether you are IS or OOS don't matter much. (since OOS students seem to be able to become IS for financial aid and all)
But they do weigh your EC and experiences heavily, so don't get discouraged if you are slightly below the numbers.

I've heard the opposite a lot on here. I'm wondering if it's one of those things that they're not supposed to announce but actually does work that way.
SUNY-UPSTATE, they state clearly that OOS students can pay IS tuition from second year and after. ALL OOS students establishe their n.y. residecy
after second year. This should be something can say in the front. Yes? No?

do not know the clear rules on this. But after living for a year, you can apply for residency. The school will need to see your NJ DL.

So, why am I not getting an interview???
check my mdapp.

dude, you should call them up again and ask about your status. That should let them know that you are still very interested, at least.

Congrats that you got into PCOM. haha. I got into PCOM and UMDNJ- but decided to go to UMDNJ (I am a NJ resident, and much much cheaper than the other schools) If you got into UMDNJ, would you rather go there than PCOM? (I would like to use pcom's athletic facilities..haha- philadelphia 76ers practice at their gym!)

But yeah, before i get off track, wish you the best and contact them.

Thanks,
I've called them about 3weeks ago. They said it's waiting for review. I still don't get why they are taking this long(close to 3months).
Money is about the same for both school for me but I've never been in a school with smaller class. I would like to experience that aspect of the school. I think it'll bring quite unique experience.
