UMDNJ-GSBS Newark 2012-2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks! Wait so you did the UMDNJ Master's and didn't even get an interview to UMDNJ Dental?!?

I took two of the restricted dental courses physiology and biochemistry (only person that year to take both) and got an A in both (only two people in either one got an A ) and rushed to get the program done in a year, but yea I still didn't get an interview. I'm not a New Jersey resident and I was already told a few months before graduating I probably wouldn't receive an interview because out of state people need much better stats than their class average and my undergrad stats probably weren't good enough (3.0<x<3.3 and 22AA). If you were in state and took the classes and did very well, I'm sure you'll get an interview. If you're out of state I don't think the program makes much of a difference on your app for njds.

The program definately did help me get into 2 dental schools so far this year though (very late into the cycle... but better late than never lol), just not njds...

Oh okay. You had a good DAT score too. Are you happy where you got accepted? If you don't mind me asking, where are you originally from and what schools did you get acceptance to?

"Also another question: I know there are only a limited number of master's students who can take the medical school courses at NJMS. Does anybody know the stats of those students? I have a 3.33 GPA/28 MCAT. I wanted to get some insight on that. Thanks!"

I agree with the other response about either apply this coming June or apply a year after, because if you wait to apply after your fall semester grades, it will be really late and there is honestly no point in trying or wasting your money at that point.

As for the stats to get into NJMS classes, Fall semester only offers a class called MGM, its basically the 1st year med school course for biochem, etc. I'm not exactly sure what the stats are, but you can contact Dr. Wagner or Dr. Garrett for more details. For Spring semester, there are more available med school classes to take, and to get into those classes, it usually depends on how well you did on your fall semester classes.

Also, by the look of your stats, if you do well in the program and finish at least 20 credits, with your mcat score, you are guaranteed an interview with NJMS, for the following year though (2014), but a higher mcat score would be a plus to stay more competitive with other med schools.

So if you were to be in the program from fall 2012-2013, and got the guaranteed interview, you wouldn't be able to start their med school til fall 2014?

Yes, because you would most likely be applying June 2013, since by then you would have finished at least 20 credits and have a year's worth of classes and grades to show in order to obtain the guarantee interview, which means you would probably be given the interview some time in August or Sept 2013 depending on when you submit your med school application.
There are a few who apply to med school the same year they are in the program, hoping to get in, but it's tough since they have to repeatedly send schools update letters on their grades, etc and by that time, most med schools don't want to wait for students who are still in a grad program as oppose to those who are already done. I know a few people this year who did that and did not get any interviews at all, so they will be reapplying again this June, ultimately wasting the money they spent last June. So it is recommended that if you take this program, you would apply to enter med school the following year.

I'm confused about the deadline.. Is the application deadline June 1, 2012 for Fall 2013 matriculation? Or June 1, 2013?

Well, just got the letter today. Rejected 🙁

June 2013. They don't really keep a hard deadline anyway. If you're applying to this as a backup option for fall 2013, applying this coming December/early Jan will make you one of the first to apply and will give you ample time to discuss your intentions to take MGM with the Deans of the program.

Has anyone not received any admission decision yet? I applied at the end of February. 🙁

How hard would you say the courses are overall/How is the workload, compared to undergrad?

-To graduate with the Master's degree, you have to finish at least 30 credits. Some people want to finish in a year, because they are applying to med/dental schools at the same time, while others prefer to stretch it out to 1.5 years or 2 years with a thesis. So I'd have to say finishing 30 credits in a year is tough, I know people who are doing that and they are taking 4-5 classes a semester, with lab rotation, etc. These classes can be tough, the basic Fundamentals class that is required for most masters students to take is just basic biochemistry, but it's a lot of material to go over and memorize nevertheless. You may qualify to take the Med School equivalent MGM course or an advanced graduate version called GMM instead of Fundamentals with certain criteria. Overall, most classes are not super tough to understand, but the workload that is involved can be a lot, especially if you're taking more than 3 classes, plus adding a lab rotation and other extracurricular activities like volunteering or if you're working etc. But is it doable? definitely! You just have to put in the time, organize your study schedule and put in the effort to study and you can do well in any of these classes.

Does everyone have different schedules or are you in the same classes?

No, everyone picks what classes they want to take other than the main required course (Fundamentals or MGM or GMM). That is the flexibility of this program. It's kinda like undergrad, where you see what different classes are offered each semester and sign up for them. However, you are bound to see many of your fellow classmates in the same classes, especially if you are going towards the same route (pre-med or pre-dent), since they do offer classes specifically for each of those routes, such as oral immuniology for pre-dent and mechanism of the heart or gross anatomy for pre-med.
Roughly what percent of students in the program complete it in 1 academic year?

Thanks.

I don't know the specific percentage of students who finish in 1 year, but gauging from my current class, I would say almost 50% or a bit more seem to want to finish in a year. Sorry I couldn't give you the specifics!

Do you guys think it would be a waste to apply to this program now? Is it too late if app complete by mid-May.

I've known people in this program that got in just a week or few weeks before orientation, so it depends on how much you want to go to this program and if you don't have any other options, there may still be a possibility that you will be accepted!

Got accepted !! But in the letter they say if I dont reply back by May 14 (with 100$ check) they will inactivate my application, I am still considering another program, anyone know if they are really strict about this?

One thing to consider regardless of deadlines is whether or not it will help you get into the med/dental school hosting the program.

NJMS does not accept international students at all; I don't think NJDS does either but could be wrong.

So, you could apply, but it would be better to go to an SMP at a host-school that accepts internationals.

On the fence between UMDNJ and Midwestern right now. Most likely going to visit both in a few weeks before I make a final decision. Anyone have any insight about how these two stack up?

Im definitely attending, anyone care to start a Fall 2012 Facebook group?

Anyone know the stats/percentage of the class (that are dental concentrations) in previous years that have been accepted to dental school? I've browsed the site but can't find anything.

Congrats mdortho! As of now looks like I am planning on attending. Where are you and all others planning on living?

I'm not 100% sure either but I've been reading posts on SDN and students who aced the classes including dental classes, were not even given an interview to NJDS. Other schools I'm not too sure about.

Just got accepted today! Was stressed because I applied rather late but am very relieved now. We should start a FB group!

Go for 180 over univ center - society hill is a common source of housing too
I think I may opt for 180. Do you know when sign up begins? I looked on the website but only the 11-12 application is up.

People have already started receiving room assignments for 180 (med students, and probably dental students, started applying months ago). Call the housing office number for more info - you could be well within time to comfortably apply, or it may be getting late in terms of ensuring you get a spot.

Oh ok! Thanks theWUbear. I thought it was an online process. I hope I'm not too late :scared:

You should be accepted without any trouble if they havent filled the class - see post in SMP thread; please don't multi-post the same question essentially

I was just accepted as well! Really excited to start this program and have the opportunity to take actual DS classes.

is it too late to apply? i just took my dat..i can next day my stuff so itll get there by june 1st

I just want to mention for anyone unsure about attending that I've seen so many improvements to the program (and I loved it before them when I went there). Unlike a few years ago when MGM and Physio were the only med school courses available (not including dental courses), they've now opened up the immunology/pathogens course, along with the neuro/psych course - allowing you to theoretically do just about all of the first 1.5 years of med school with NJMS students. If you want to opt out of any of those classes (or take a small class on the side), GSBS has the full compliment of grad student classes that pure structured SMPs don't have. There's a "medical/dental scholars program" now, giving additional access to mentors for pre-health advising and network-building within the NJMS system.

I used to say this is a place without the frills, but a great "bang for your buck" place that gives you what you need. Now I see it not only as a super cheap option where you have every opportunity to succeed- but as a place having all the additional perks.

how does the medical/dental scholars program work? Do you have to apply to be in it, or can you elect to be in it. And if you have to apply...is it part of the initial application process or can you do it later? Thanks!!

anyone know how long it takes to hear back once u apply?

I felt like the wait was forever. I got an email saying they received my application material on April 20th. The email said "Please do not expect an admission decision until late April/May possibly sooner". I only just got my acceptance yesterday, over a month after I submitted.

You do not need to apply, they select ~30 from the student body.

Has anyone been contacted to take their med/dental classes yet?

Any recent acceptances?

It's killing me not submitting my AMCAS yet, waiting to hear back from them

Got in today.

99% going here.

Starting to get excited for school!

any idea when we find out about the MGM class?

WUBear,

Is the MGM class doable with a science background limited to med school prereq course?

I also noticed that it is scheduled to start a week before orientation (assuming the med school starts earlier than the grad school) was that the case for you?

Thanks

Not sure if it is different from current grad students and incoming grad students, but current grad students have already heard from Dr. Garrett regarding admissions to the MGM course. He just sent out an email to those who were eligible to sign up.

Not sure if it is the same for incoming grad students though...

Thanks mrcharlie, I spoke with him two weeks ago and he was working on only returning students at that time and had not started incoming students. So I do believe that only returning students have been notified....thanks again
